when i click on the gmail link, or type in gmail, or anything similar, it just never loads up.

I had that happen too at home. I ended up clicking the "Basic HTML Version" in the bottom right corner.
It's not just you.

oddly, it works on my desktop. it's my lap top that doesn't work.
the problem species, is that i can't even get to that screen. no part of gmail loads up. i can't even sign in!

The new version (3.08) of Firefox screwed up the cookies on my PC which messed with my gmail. Clearing cookies didn't work because the cookie file was corrupted by the update. I suffered for a week or so until I found the following solution:
Renamed my "cookies.sqlite" file to "cookies.tmp" and it works fine now. That file is in the "C:\Documents and Settings\?username?\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\???????.default" directory on my XP box.

Tree- Click on tools--->folder options-->click on the view tab and choose the option to show hidden files and folders. You should be able to find that folder
