0 Subject: MS Office delay issue

On my laptop, I have Excel 97, Word 2002, Excel 2003, and Excel 2007 all installed.

Just within the last few days, they have all developed the same symptom. If I click on the "Open" button, it takes about 5 seconds for the file directory to appear. If I then select a file to open, there is again about a 5 second delay before the file begins to open. OR if I click cancel, it takes about 5 seconds for the file directory window to disappear. Some other functions also seem to be on a similar delay, such as starting a macro in Word, or sorting a range of data in Excel. After a short delay, the operation works normally.

Curiously, if I open a document by double-clicking on it from a Windows Explorer file directory, it opens instantaneously. But opening the same file from within an the Office program generates the delay.

I can temporarily cure the issue by rebooting. But eventually (usually within a day), the problem resurfaces.

I have tried various searches on the issue, but none of the problems seem identical to my issue, and none of the proposed solutions have made any improvement.

I can't think of anything that I've done (new software, etc.) that coincided with the problem.

Any ideas? It's not a critical issue now - although the repeated delays are annoying.

Try starting up the Task Manager and sort by CPU usage, then open up a document and see what's doing the churning. That will at least tell you what program is causing the problem. Could be Office, could be a virus scanner, etc.

Not specific to your issue but generally can be used to help things "like" your issue-----would be running a good scandisk, followed by a good disk defrag. It could be that the drive has become overly fragmented and the "pieces" are far enough apart in this case to cause the delay. The defrag might fix that.

Depending on your operating system you may or may not like the Microsoft installed scandisk and disc defrag. There are good free options available on the web.

Do you have network drives that are disconnected, perhaps, or an open printer drive? Not that the files are on the drives, but maybe Office is waiting a few seconds for something to time out on a drive no longer available before opening your file.

I gotta ask----is there a reason you have all those Excel versions installed? I'm surprised it was working harmoniously until recently.

I have a suspicion that it's Excel 2007 that is creating the issue. I seldom use it, although I have had it open a few times over the past week. I don't recall whether that has been associated with the recurrence of the issue or not. I rebooted last night, and so far this morning, all is good - and I haven't opened Excel 2007 at all since the reboot.

I don't think it's a network drive or printer issue. I also don't think it's a disk error or defrag issue. It seems to be a delay issue in opening any popup window in Office - open file, data sort, macro, etc.

[4] I primarily use Excel 2003. There are a few macros that run faster in Excel 97, so I keep it active for those. I could mothball 97, but I'm pretty sure it's not the culprit. And I've had no problems with those two version co-existing for years.

I have Excel 2007 on this machine because it came pre-installed (it's an XP machine). It's occasionally useful to see if certain macros will run OK in it (so far, they generally have not), although I find the layout of Excel 2007 so confounding that I have never seriously tried to debug those issues. Some day, I'm sure I'll have to convert. But for now, I could eliminate the 2007 version if that turns out to be the problem. And based on some googling, that seems most likely - although I haven't seen my specific issue referenced anywhere.
