0 Subject: Spam filtering

Scenario: I have several different domains hosted on my web server. One of those domains is for my church.

Prior to mid-January, I used my hosting company's DNS server, and all email sent to that domain was routed through my server's mail processor. All legitimate email addresses were then auto-forwarded to various associated gmail accounts. One reason for forwarding email through gmail addresses was to take advantage of gmail's spam filtering.

In mid-January, I changed to a different DNS server (it's a server maintained by enom), and used that new server to autoforward email to the related gmail accounts.

All good email still goes through just fine. But we have noticed a dramatic decline in spam that reaches the gmail accounts. Accounts that used to receive 50+ spams per day are now getting only one or two.

My suspicion was that the new mail forwarding server was applying some sort of spam blocker at the front end, essentially restricting much of the spam from being forwarded at all. But when I questioned my domain registrar, I got the following response:
"Thanks for contacting us. When switching over to default DNS settings, your mail forwards go through a different mail system and is no longer going to a 'physical' mailbox on a server. Some mail servers get hit with more, or less, spam than others. So, this does not necessarily mean that more spam is being blocked, but more likely that there is just less coming in."

Does this response make any sense? Is some spam directed to a specific server? I thought that all email was directed to a specific email address, and not a mail server. If so, why would a change of mail server result in less spam?
