I run Windows XP on m Del. Recently, I had one of those 'helpful Dell messages' telling me that updates are ready to be installed.

Once they were done, I had the newest version of Windows Media player. Yeah...it sucks and I need some help with 2 problems.

1) When I sign on, media player pops up and trys to run a web page. I end up getting the "This page cannot be found" message. It never did this before (automatically run mediaplayer on start up that is) and I don't want it to run now.

2) No videos play. ESPN motion is just blank.
Those great little video clips I get in email from friends...nothing. I get a message stating that I cannot connect to server.
This is really crimping my porn surfing habits. ;)

Seriously though, I need some help here. Anybody have any suggestions? I have not been able to find squat on either of these issues.

Do a Windows update and see if you need to do an update to the update (or, open the player and check for an update that way).

I hate the WMP. Clips will often cut out after ten seconds of play. Some just don't come up at all. And it monopolizes the media associations, trying to get you to play all media through the player, even types designed for use on other players.

Sounds like a Codec issue for PD, and god knows what for Khahan. Simple solution I found to all my WMP issues was this. I have it associated with my .avi and .mpg (and .mpeg) files, but of course you first have to go into WMP and uncheck the associations in there. (They override any you manually setup in Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types)

The new WMP is actually supposed to be decent finally, but I like my zoomplayer. Simple look and simple usage, which is all I want with a movie file player.

Hey R9, do you know how I could get the Zoom player to play Live streaming video? They would be either RealPlayer streams or Windows Media streams. I installed Zoom player but when I click on these live streams either real player or Windows media player comes up.

Either in WMP or RealPlayer, find the file associations option, wherever that may be. Make sure that whatever file type the streaming video is, its turned OFF in those two programs. Then go into Windows Explorer, top menu: -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types, and scroll to the file type that the streaming video is. 'Change' lets you select a new program to run those files, or lets you browse to a directory that a program is installed (in case its not in the list shown.)

As for what type of file streaming video is, I have no idea. Sorry. :)

looks like the file type is .ASX

And it doesn't work in Zoom Player. Maybe I'm missing some plug in or something. The error message said it was "unable to create filters"
