0 Subject: TV as Computer Monitor

Ok, so my son wants a new TV which he would also like to use as a monitor for his computer in his room. Since space is limited, there is not really enough room for both a TV and a monitor. I see that the TVs come with an RGB/computer input, so does that mean that TV will work as both. Thanks, Dave

You should be able to.

I just picked up a 40" APEX for the kid's playroom on Sunday. It has a VGA port, as well as HDMI. The computer I have up there for them had both ports, as well as DVI, so I could potentially connect it to the PC. There are also DVI to HDMI adapters if you wanted to go that route.

Your important thing, I think is the resolution of the TV set. My new one is 1080p and will do a resolution of 1920x1080. If you go with a 720p set, think 800x600 (or 1280x720...something along those lines).

Thinking more, I suppose you could also use SVideo out if your computer has that (unlikely I suppect).

Actually, its pretty common to have have a PC connected to a TV. Google 'HTPC' (home theatre PC).

Summarized, it just depends on the inputs your TV and the outputs on your PC. I'd go 1080p.

Yeah, if it has a VGA port it should work just fine.

I've hooked our 2009 Samsung LCD up to my Inspiron laptop when the DVR had too many shows set to tape at the same time and watched the online version of whatever we missed.

cool thanks, we were thinking we needed a more expensive model that had the "Internet Apps" but then I saw the computer/rgb input...

Thanks, saved me some $$$ ;-)

The APEX 40" was $360, definitely not high end stuff.

Googled HTPC like you suggested and found out all I really need is the DVI to HDMI cable to make it work. amazon has them for .66c

As far as saving on the TVs, we were looking at a TV that had Internet Apps vs. the exact tv w/o them and it was a $70 difference. His TV needs to fit on his desk like a monitor so we are looking into a 26" TV. 40" is nice but too big.

I always have to laugh about ONLY 26" as I grew up with a 27" console TV and it was considered pretty big. LOL

Agreed and understood. When I got my FIRST 15" monitor it was like...holy crap! This thing is HUGE! Turns out the huge part, was its footprint and weight. lmao Then I recall my first 20" flat screen monitor....niiiiiiiice. lol Now, we hook our PCs upto the 72" front room TV and viola!

Odd isnt it, how nothing stays "good enough" for very long?
