I'm passing on an issue from my secretary at work:

We have a old Compaq Armada 7730MT Series 2890A Laptop computer that we are trying to run PowerPoint on to a TV screen in our Lobby area and we want the screens to run continuously when someone is in the building. We have it up and running the way we want but the screen times out after 20 minutes unless someone is here to touch the keyboard. The slides continuously run on the laptop screen just as they do on the TV screen but it still times out until someone touches it. We have tried setting the PowerSave OFF, and selected NO SCREENSAVER but to no avail. Can you give us anything else to try?

She e-mailed HP, but they just talk about how the warantee is up. I've fiddled around with this computer, and have come up with nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am heading out of town for the week starting tomorrow, so if I don't respond immediately, it doesn't mean I'm ignoring your thoughts. I'll update you when I get a chance.

If it's not a screensaver issue, the monitor could be blacking out because of the Power Management settings. It should be in the Control Panel.

If it's not a power management issue, you could find some automation tool that would emulate a mouse move or keyboard click at given intervals, plenty out there, I use automize to run all my spreadsheets overnight. Cost me $20.00, but there are some free ones.

This is running Windows 95.

We've disabled the Energy Save options at the same place where we disabled the screen saver option. We've also disabled the energy save option under the "Power" icon found in the control panel.

Doom- Is this a program that can be downloaded somewhere? We've jokingly thought about getting a "dipping bird" to peck at the keyboard every few seconds. If there is a "real" program that does that, it could work.

Did you disable the energy saving in the Compaq Setup (Compaq's version of BIOS)? This is done at the startup of the computer. A square will flash in the bottom right corner of the computer. When it does, hit "F10" and you should be in the setup.

If there isn't a flashing box, try using the BIOS upgrade or Power Management Update from the Drivers and Support at Compaq. Also look at "Computer Setup for Portables" on that page.

Chuck, yes there are numerous programs out there that will do this, the one I mentioned has a "Wake up" function that does that.

I just wanted to come back and update you guys.

I ended up trying the F10 option, and it worked. The screen had a max shut-off time of 17 minutes, which corresponded with about when we saw it timing out.

The only thing is, it must be set to "manual" everytime we boot the computer. The computer takes over on every restart. This isn't a major deal, but certainly falls in the category of semi-annoying.

Thanks again for all your help.
