Subject: Problem sending email

For some reason, I'm unable to connect to my ISP's smtp server in order to send email from my laptop. This first happened when I was on vacation, going through an earthlink dialup connection. But, when I got home, I found that I couldn't connect to my comcast outgoing email server either. The same problem seems to occur from both Netscape and Outlook Express. I have no problem sending email from my desktop computer.
I am able to receive email.
I've been able to get around the problem by using a web based email program. But I would like to figure this one out.
When trying to send email, I get an error message saying that "The message could not be sent because connecting to the SMTP server failed."
Any ideas?

any firewalls involved that are blocking port 25 (smtp-port)?
try using an other SMTP-Server, if you want try smtp.inode.at (smtp-server of my ISP, needs no authentication)

I read that you used the word "comcast".
They've changed servers on me twice without notification of any kind. I would give them a call.

The outgoing server settings are the same as those on my desktop, which is still working fine.
I don't believe I have any firewalls (or software) that is/are blocking port 25 - but how can I tell if it is blocked?

BTW, I got exactly the same error message when trying to connect to smtp.inode.at

try the following command:
telnet [ip_or_name_of_smtp_server] 25
you should get a message like "220 smartmx-01.inode.at ESMTP Exim 4.30 Mon, 26 Jul 2004 00:57:53 +0200" or at least a connection. if this does not work and there is a connect error then it looks like something on your laptop is blocking access to your smtp-server or the smtp-port in general.
other thought: could this be a DNS-resolving/DNS-server error? do you get the same results (the same ip's) on your laptop/desktop with this command:
nslookup [name_of_smtp_server]

telnet seems to work OK to smtp server port 25, and telnet to the equivalent ip address gets essentially the same response.

when telnet and nslookup are working then a firewall or DNS-entries can not be the problem.
additional thought: - look at file %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\SERVICES and check if the port-alias for smtp is ok, on my pc it looks like "smtp 25/tcp mail", a while ago there was a virus that manipulated entries in the SERVICES and HOSTS file - check sending mails with other programs like sendmail, i always try to do things the command-line way instead of the user inferface click-click-click way with nice animations and standard error messages like "error number 127 has occured" and no further info
info to sendmail: download the trial version, install it, change your smtp-server in the sendmail.ini file and test your config with
sendmail -messagefile=sendmail.ini -subject="test" your-email@your-domain.com

I never could figure out the source of the problem. But I tried restoring my system to a prior restore point, and it worked.
