0 Subject: Good Ad-Aware Practices and Hygiene

I got around to updating Ad-Aware today and running a partial scan. 700+ bad things! Some questions.

1. I deleted all tracking cookies. I notice that the Forun doesn't now recognize me. Is there a safe guideline as to what to delete and what not to?

2. What's a good guideline for how often to update and scan with Ad-Aware (daily, weekly,?)

Thanx.

Weekly is a good barometer, IMHO. Someone else on the Forum had an excellent suggestion on how to handle the Rotoguru cookie, which I've used for other sites as well.

Delete all the cookies, as you did. Open your browser and go straight to Rotoguru. Close the browser. Run Ad-Aware again. The only cookie that shows up should be Rotoguru. There is an option on Ad-Aware to hide this one from coming up ever again. I can't recall the exact wording and am not at home. So hide the cookie, and Rotoguru will always recognize you.

I used this for Yahoo Fantasy Sports and a couple of others. If I was at home I could just tell you what the Rotoguru cookie was, but I'm not there. :(

It is also recommended in most circles to have multiple spyware software (I use 3). None eliminate everything, and can be run back to back to back.

Thanx for the multiple-spyware suggestion. I was reading a computer magazine today and they had multiple options but I was not sure if they would be duplicative or even get in each other's way like anti-virus programmes.

Weekly. Easy to remember. Every time I change my underwear. thanx!

For Yahoo! game users -- does Yahoo! have like hundreds and hundreds of pop-ups and flash ads or is that something thst's latched on to Yahoo! ?

Use Firefox. In addition to never seeing a popup in yahoo (though for some reason, I have just started getting one in cbs), it allows you to manage your cookies crumb by crumb.

I just go to the GuruPatron Validation dropdown under "Other RotoGuru Pages" and reset my ID when necessary. I don't remember Ad-Aware affecting it though, but I could be mistaken.

I also use SpyBot

PC World reviews the malware "removers":

You've almost certainly encountered the ads: A dialog box pops up on your system, bearing the message "Warning! Your computer may be infected with spyware" and suggesting that you scan your computer immediately. Click it, and you often reach a Web site providing a "free spyware scanner" that finds all sorts of malware on your PC--and then offers to sell you software that will clean it all up.

Should you buy these products? Based on our tests, our opinion is no. Following complaints from several PC World readers, we tested seven heavily advertised spyware-removal tools-- MyNetProtector, NoAdware, PAL Spyware Remover, SpyAssault, SpyBlocs, Spyware Stormer, and XoftSpy--and found that none were as effective as reputable free products such as Spybot Search & Destroy. A couple even installed new spyware.

Lol---those pop up/advertised ones---they p*ss me off. Since when would anything like that be good? Anything popping up on the computer is usually ad-related in and of itself.....

It can't be said enough though.

As well drop your Temporary Internet Storage value to about 1 or 2MB.

You can always choose not delete your rotoguru cookies.

It's actually not that hard to keep spyware off your PC.

Do not click on ANY ads online. Do not open or click any links in an email that you don't know what it is. Be careful what free programs you use. Kazaa, Morpheus and programs like that are loaded with spyware.

Easiest way to keep spyware off your computer is do not let anyone else use it.

Or just use Firefox/Mozilla.

Whatever floats your boat.
