My CD-Rom is unable to load any of my games. When I put a game in, it does all the whirling and whatnot but then doesn't come up on the screen. What do I need to check? |

Can you read other CDs in the drive? What happens when you put a music CD in, for instance?
The drive might just need to be replaced.

Music CD's are fine. Just games. Strange. It's been like this for a few months but I'm just now getting around to finding out what's wrong.

Try getting Adaware or something like that if you don't have it already. Could be spyware acting up or something. What happens when you click on D: or whatever one your CD is? Just spins and nothing pops up? And what about if you click on a game that requires the cd to play? When you open it does it say the disk isn't in the drive?

Try Windows Explorer, right click on the CD Drive and choose Properties. Look for the Auto Play settings and see if they need to be tewaked. This was a common problem years ago when plug and play, auto play, etc, were not prevalent.

Have Adaware. Everything looks kosher. I have a DVD drive on D: and a DVD/CD-RW drive on E:
I looked at the Auto Play Settings as you suggested and I haven't got a clue what the settings mean. I guess you could say I'm very technically-challenged.

Depending on what Operating System you are using, you should see something like this:
"Select a content type and choose an action you want Windows to perform automatically."
You can then choose music, games, etc....and select whether to open them etc....there may be an auto play tab depending.

could it be some copy-protected-cd's? a few months ago I had a similiar problem with a few games. I had an older CD-RW-drive from Plextor. I got a DVD/CD-RW-drive from a friend and that one is working fine with the cd's.
currently a lot of games in europe (where I live) have no copy-protection because of such compatibility-problems.

Bond, #7 is quoted from XP, should you should be able to find and follow those instructions.
What is the speed of your CD Rom drive, and are the games old, new, etc?

Ok, I've garnered some success. Was able to play the game of "Life" with the kiddos. However when I took the game out of the CD drive and reentered it (just to see if it was indeed working properly), it states that I have to re-install. Why is that?
Where oh where is "Q" when you need him? ;)

Unless you exited the game improperly (like by just opening it during the game), you shouldn't have to re-install it. But it only takes a few seconds anyway.
