A little help please. I have a Windows XP OS that includes Media Player. My internet connection service included Real One Player. If I were to download mpegs from the internet, do I have to use Real One or could I just use Media Player?

You can choose the default player for the particular type of file you are using (note: You could very well have the same file have different defaults depending upon whether you are opening the file within a browser or simply in windows).

If you don't have any problems, you can certainly just use the defaults. Otherwise, you can change the defaults in Windows to whichever one you want to open that type of file.

You can use Media player. Hold down shift and right click on the file and then choose the program you want to use. There should be a checkbox that says always use this program to open this type of file.

How do I check my defaults? Couldn't I just uninstall Real One Player? By doing this, would that make the Media player work on all downloads?

Furthermore, how do I get rid of that annoying sound that my computer makes when I connect to the internet? I think it has something to do with the modem but not sure where go to check it.

You should be able to turn off the modem volume on the modem itself.

And that would be where?

Some modems (not all) have an external volume control. It would be on the care where you jack in your phone cord.

You can also program the modem with a particular string to tell it to shut off the sound, the modem driver sometimes has this ability as well, or you could click on the little speaker symbol on the lower right of your taskbar, and mute the midi, I believe. The last option's the easiest, if there is no volume control on the card itself.

If you don't have a volume knob on the modem itself (or a switch to turn it off and on), go to Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/[click on your modem]/Modem tab. Speaker volume should be the sliding bar near the top.

Mr. Dude,
I found the modem tab as you suggested. If I switch the modem to off will that cut out the annoying noise when I log on to the internet? Will it affect my outer speakers?

Assuming it's a modem speaker toggle and not the power (doh!), it won't affect any other sound-using programs, since the modem sound does not go through the computer speakers but comes out of the modem itself.

Ok, I'll give it a try. Many thanks. Now how about my other question posed in #3 above. Uninstalling Real One Player: good or not?

Many people hate RP because of all the baggage it brings, and because it's a bit of a resource hog for what it does. I've had no problem with it, but could probably get along quite well with just Media Player and Quicktime.

If you don't use it now, might as well uninstall and give yourself some room.
