0 Subject: Putting audio files on a website

As a "by-default" webmaster of a website, I am wondering the basics of putting an audio file up on a website.

The file would be about 45 minutes long, and I can get it from the hard copy (tape) to CD to the computer (via Windows Media Player). However, is there any program I need to purchase to get it on the site, or can I simply upload it like I do pictures and other files?

Wow, a 45-minute file -- that's going to be a big download. What file type are you wanting to offer it as? Mp3?

Unless you want people to play it 'in' the browser you should be able to upload, put a link to the file and people will be able to download it.

An mp3 (or a .mov) will play within the browser quite nicely as long as people have Quicktime. Users can always right-click and save, too, if they want.

That's what we use at work, because it's so easy and universal. I just make sure to provide a link to the Quicktime download page in case people don't have it yet.

It doesn't need to be available within the browser.

Our church wants to put our Sunday services up on the site so that people who miss a week or our snowbirds can check in even when they are not there.

Maybe I need a bit more info on how to get it there.

This was my plan:

Take the tape and burn it onto a CD
Copy the CD to the computer via Windows Media Player

Would I then be able to just upload the Media Player file and be done? (I have no experience w/ MP3's...).

Thanks for all your help.

I would recommend going with mp3 format in this case, because it's going to be a pretty large download and mp3 will compress your file size fairly well. Unless, that is, you've got something set up to provide streaming audio.

The simplest way to do what you need is to take your audio CD and use Windows Media, iTunes or a similar program to rip an mp3 from it. (This will be one of your file options.) Put the file somewhere on your server, and then create a page with links to point to your files. It really is that simple.

Here's an example. All these links point to mp3 files that I keep in a particular folder on our server. Hover over a link and you'll see what I mean.

I agree with Prez 100%. But remember, the people downloading it better have broadband or it will take hours to dl it.

Actually, I think it would be a much better idea to convert it to wma format. You lose some quality (but I think you should at least try it because I think it will still work). THe file is much smaller than an mp3 file.

If you're not worried about compatibility, that's probably a good point. Aren't they generally about 1/3 smaller?
