0 Subject: Self Edit Capability Added

I've added the ability for anyone to selectively delete their own posts.

Your delete capability is triggered by your ID number. You can only delete a post that was submitted from your own ID. If you are using a different computer, a different browser, or if your ID has changed, you won't be able to delete a prior post.

Also, this capability will only work for items posted since yesterday (2/16) afternoon.

Here's how to do it. If you want to edit a thread, you need to first identify its thread number. This is the number in the URL that immediately precedes ".shtml". For example, this thread is number 11.

Once you've identified the thread number, pull up this URL:
http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/selfedit.pl. You will be prompted to select the forum and fill in the thread number.

Next, you will see a page which lists all messages in the specified thread. Those which you are eligible to delete will be denoted with selection choices. If you started the thread, you may elect to delete the entire thread. You may also choose to only delete certain of your own messages. You can select the deletions item by item. (You cannot delete the starting message without deleting the entire thread.)

Once you've made your choices, click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. This will bring you to a "preview" page, where you can make sure you've done it correctly. If the prototype looks OK, then you can finish the job. If not, go back and make changes.

Occasionally, if you make an unintentional double post, you won't be able to delete only one. If a double post is an exact duplicate (including post time), the program won't be smart enough to delete only one. If this applies to you, then you'll have to decide the lesser of evils - a double post, or eliminating both.

Please delete entire threads with caution. If you recently started a thread, and quickly notice it is a duplicate, then by all means, torch it. But if there is useful information in a thread, you might want to leave it, even if it is a duplicate. I'm expecting that most people will exercise good judgment.

At this point, you can only delete items. I have not included the ability to edit your messages. I may add that at some point, but for now, only moderators have that capability.

Moderators, you should continue to use the process you have always used. While some features are shared, moderators have more powerful options at their disposal.

I have done a good bit of testing, but some bugs are likely. If something doesn't seem to work correctly, send me an email.

I think I have fixed the ability to delete duplicate posts. Should work.

Can you(or have you) add the link to this feature in the pulldown menus?

Just tried to edit 41036318 in politics forum to add a dynamic link, but it didn't let me in. Any suggestions?

man, in case this wasn't answered elsewhere, you only have the ability to delete your posts, not to edit them.

Guru, did you ever fix it so you could delete embedded forms?

I thought so. But some of your stuff, with embedded scripts, may still be causing the editing program some confusion.

In the Test Forum, I created a quick form with a button and no scripts, but I still cannot self-edit it.

I think it will work now.

I had previously changed the moderator program to handle this, but I guess I forgot to fix the self edit program as well.

There seems to be some problems with the self-edit function. A couple of threads I have created don't seem to want to be deleted.

I remember there was one other gurupie who mentioned this in the last couple of days.

Are you using Netscape? Some of the forms you are posting are quite long, and for some reason, Netscape is incapable of handling the excessive length within the self edit program.

If so, it should work OK in MSIE (although if you switch browsers, then the ID won't be the same, thereby thwarting the self edit cabaility). If not, then there must be some other idiosyncrasy of your posts, because the program is working in general.

If there are any specific threads you'd like to have whacked, let me know and I'll put a bullet in them.

No I use MSIE all the time, I may post a form in MSIE and test that it works in Netscape, but they are all originally created in MSIE.

I will have to take a look to see if I am doing anything differently.

I have been quite careful to delete any old posts that are not being used because of their size, so I noticed in the past couple of days this sudden change.

Thanks Dave, I'll check what the heck I am doing.

Never mind, DD - I think I found the problem. Now I have to figure out how to fix it.

I think I fixed it. It's always possible that I may have broken something else in the process, however.

Let me know if you have further problems.

To make things a little easier (and perhaps more recognized), how about including a link under the "View the Forum Registry" link near the top of each thread that is a SelfEdit link for this specific thread. So the example for this thread would be: Self Edit this thread, with the link "text" looking like:

(a target="selfeditme" href="http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/selfedit.pl?board=dev&thread=11")Self Edit this thread(/a)

Just trying to think of how to make self edit easier for everyone, including me (because of the DivTracker posts).

Thanks.

Good idea. I'll put it on the "to do" list.
