Subject: URLs

Why is the URL of the page: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/mb/base/12034.shtml?1017695040
The stuff after the question mark is obviously a parameter, but what is it? Is it a cookie? Because then I wouldn't want to pass it along as much as I do. Is there a way to not have it appear in the URL so it's easier to copy and paste? It's not that bad, just a little annoying. |

Good question. I'm surprised no one has ever asked it before.
That number after the ? is the time of the last update. It is what allows your browser to recognize a thread that you have already read. Everytime a post is appended to a thread, that time number changes, and thus your browser no longer recognizes it as a visited link.
It has no bearing on cookies, and it even has no bearing on the actual access of the thread. You can access any thread with any number appended to it - or with no number (and no "?"). It is merely a trick to allow the browser to recognize which links have been visited in their current state, and which have been updated since then.
When passing along (or copying) URLs, it really makes no difference whether you include that appendage or not. I usually chop it off, but it does no harm to leave it on.

I like that! Makes sense too, except I don't like the annoying URLs. But it's 50% of one and half of the other.
Of course it was a good question! The are no bad questions, only bad people.
