In case you wondered...

Today's server outage (from about 11:50am-12:45pm EST) was caused by a general power outage in Bedford, TX, where the rotoguru1 server is located.

Rumor has it that a car drove into a transformer pole.

Funny. Rotoguru2 had no problems. That server is locted someplace else?

Both servers are in the Dallas metropolitain area, although the rotoguru2 server may be in a different facility.

RotoGuru2 is on a shared server, and I believe the hosting service had its shared servers powered by a diesel generator during the outage, so that may explain its continued availability as well - although I didn't detect any downtime for rotoguru2 at all.

Just guessing. When I signed up for this dedicated server, one concern I had was the close proximity (and/or common access network) of the two servers. However, it has been extremely rare to have both servers inaccessible simultaneously, so they seem to have a beneficial degree of separation. If there is a prolonged outage on one, I like to have the capability to at least post a message on the other.

As many of you have no doubt noticed, all of the rotoguru domains have been intermittently slow or AWOL at times over the past 18 hours.

This is apparently the result of several "Denial of Service" attacks that have been directed at the hosting service, causing their network to experience massive traffic overloads every now and then. Here is the message from the hosting service:
The Dallas CDC-01 network has suffered from 3 DDoS (distributed denial of services attacks) in the last 24 hours. The FBI has been contacted and they are actively seeking the offending attacker(s). Additionally, all of our upstream providers are blocking the offending IP addresses and are capturing log information and have sent those to the FBI for prosecution. We apologize for ANY AND ALL inconveniences this may have caused you. We are working around the clock to stop, catch, and prosecute the offending attacker(s). We sincerely appreciate your patience in this matter.
The rotoguru domains are not the targets of these attacks, but are experiencing these service interruptions. Thanks for your patience.

This has also resulted in some interruptions in my ability to receive email. As far as I know, no emails have been lost, but sometimes it is taking hours for them to get through to me.
