Ever thought about a forum specially devoted to anything that doesn't fit in the other forums? I realize a lot of talk about various topics takes place in the politics forum, but the name alone and the seriousness of the politics forum doesn't allow for a lot of "light discussions", like, i don't know, music, cars, really anything, personal issues, tv shows, foreign countries, great places to live in,... this is a list with no end.

Maybe that's something you specifically don't want on the site, and you want to keep it fantasy-focused. But the implementation of the politics forum makes me think you could be quite open to other topics as well.

My understanding of the advent of the politics forum was to prevent the recurrance of political topics from popping up on the other forums. I think it actually became an issue that had to be dealt with. Knowing Baldwin, Madman and Seattle Zen, I can certainly see why. ;)

The politics forum was started several years ago, during the Presidential primaries as I recall. Small World even had launched a politics game of some sort, although I don't think it ever attracted any interest.

There were enough political discussions taking place in other forums that a separate political forum seemed like a good idea. After the election, it continued as a more general "world events" type of forum. Occasionally lighter topics are broached, but many still have geopolitical overtones.

It's worked out pretty well - although we seldom see luminaries such as Steve Houpt or Madman in any of the sports forums any more!

If you want to get into lighter general topics, I'd suggest that you try the politics forum, in spite of its name. However, if there are enough who feel that a separate forum is better (perhaps feeling the the politics name is too intimidating), I could be swayed.

Join us in the Politics Forum; it's not as heavy-handed as you might think.

It was begun by Guru after the bombing of the USS Cole and the huge amount of posting that it generated in the various sports forums. But it's not always acrimonious or even very deep.
