I'm trying Google AdSense as an advertising provider. Google attempts to provide ads that are targeted to the content of the page. When I flipped though the various topic areas, I noticed that most of the sports forums showed adds that were related to their specific sport. And the politics forum had one for "Eco-friendly advice".
Currently, these ads will appear on 25% of forum pages (randomly) and also along the right side of the blurb page.
Let me know if you experience any problems. I wasn't sure that the way I embedded the ads would work, but it seems to be OK in MSIE and Netscape 7 for me. It is still possible that other browser/system combos may not operate properly.
Continuation of this ad source will depend on lack of technical problems and amount of revenue earned. If neither seems worth the aggravation, I'll eliminate them. But it's worth a shot. |

Guru,
I was just wondering how adsense has been working out for you. I haven't been reading here for quite a while, but I've just accepted a job at Google and am specifically curious as to how well contextual advertising works for a site like yours.

It's working OK. From my perspective, it's marginal revenue without any material effort on my part, and without any material degradation of site response or site appearance. Most of the revenue has come from the ads on the blurb page.
After an initial surge of activity in the first couple of months, things slowed down - mostly, I suspect, because I have a fairly stable population (not many newcomers) and most of the ads were simply getting recycled. As the seasons change, activity picks up a little, though.
