Subject: New Column Ideas

Guru, on the Index of Forum Topics page there are two columns, Forum Topic and Time of last post. Can you add a third column that says which thread that last post appeared in? I don't know if this is easy to do, or if it's even that useful for most people, but I know I'd find it helpful.
Also, is it feasible to include an extra column in the Forums that displays who posted in that thread last (you can call it "Last post by")? |

I'll think about these ideas.

Turns out these were easy to implement. The first part is done. The next will be shortly.

Did the Font size just grow or are my eyes getting better?

These enhancements are great. Thanks Knicksfan for suggesting them and Guru for implementing them.

Font size?
I didn't think I did anything to the font size. Where are you seeing a different font size?

First time I saw the new screen it looked that way, but not anymore, as if my system was "adjusting" to it.........may be what happened to StLCards.

It looks like the Font has grown and it is new. The Bold looks really bold now to me anyway.

Even the Guru Golf looks different now. I had to open my window wider just to see the whole scorecard. Good thing I have a 21" monitor ;)

I checked again, the font in the middle column is bigger than that in the left column. For me anyway.

Aha. I forgot to set the middle column font to be consistent with the others. Should be OK now.
StLCards - I don't know why GuruGolf should look any different. Are you sure your browser's default setting for text size hasn't changed?

I'm not sure what is going on. I have two computers. The one running XP looks like usual. The one running W2K, the font looks like it is about twice the usual size. Both monitors are set to 1280 x 1024, 32bit colore, windows standard appearance. I tried deleting cookies but that didn't help either.

Reboot my computer, still looks the same. Both computers using IE6.0 same level. All my other sites look "normal". LOL, maybe I am going senile and this is how it always looked....

If I copy and paste some text from the posted messages into word it says Verdana 10 and looks like "normal". However it is magnified when I view it from the web.

In your browser, go View/Text Size and select a smaller size. I suspect it is set on one of the larger settings right now.

Yeah, I just found that. It was set to "Larger" whereas my other computer is set to "medium". Intersting that that setting has no effect on some websites, like rototimes? Going to medium worked.

It has no effect on a lot of sites, but the ones that change are definitely obvious.

Some sites set a specific font size. For those, the browser setting is irrelevant, as I recall.
Other sites set font size relative to the default. For example, on the index page of this forum, the font size is set to -1, meaning one size smaller than the browser default. This allows the browser text size setting to actually have an impact.

Looks great Guru! Thanks a lot.
One more thing though...My suggestion was for the "last post by" to be in each individual forum, not just on the "forum list" page.

OK, I implemented the other part.
Let me know if there are formatting issues that I need to address.
BTW, the name of the last poster is stored at the time of the post. Previous to this change, that data wasn't stored in a conveniently accessible place, so I started storing it this afternoon. Thus, the field will gradually be populated as threads are posted to. Threads with no posts since the program change will just show a blank.

Guru, I don't know about others, but since most forums are pretty popular, I think you can cut down the formatting of the "Last Post" to something like: 08/06 7:46p - Guru Instead of: Fri, Aug 06, 7:46p - Guru Realistically, if a forum is popular, the day of the week doesn't matter because the most recent posts would just be from today and then one day earlier was yesterday, etc. In non-popular forums (like this one), you get a situation where the first few "Last Post"'s are Fri, Thu, Thu, Mon, Sat, Thu, etc. and the day of the week doesn't help there because you have to look at the date to get any sense of when the posts occured. So, I guess I'm just saying that the day of the week may be unnecessary. Plus, it'll help make that far right column a little smaller. When you change one thing... ;)

I just want to add that I love the enhancements. I even entered forums I had not in ages just because the last subject/post by spurred some interest. I have always thought that the message forums and individual threads at rotoguru.com are better presented and easier to navigate than any other message forum I have seen anywhere on the web, and now it gets even better.
Great suggestion KF, and thanks Guru for the quick implementation. Another reason there are many gurupies that are so loyal to this site is because we feel like we all in some small way have contributed to it's development and continual improvement.
Sorry if this post sounds too much like a kiss up, it reads that way, but it was not my intention.
Now, if someone else will post something so my name is not sitting on there for long ;)

I agree with the first part of the sentiment, but the second I am not so sure of. I kind of feel like the change was made so quickly that it seems whimsical. It's a big change. I thought I was having problems with my web browser when I came to the site tonight. I guess I need to embrace progress or get out of the way, but I just wanted to throw out my opinion.

KKB[26] - I certainly could do something along the lines of your suggestion. But my real question is whether that's desirable. I hate to take away information that's been there, even if it is of marginal utility.
I guess the question is whether saving a few characters of column space is of material benefit to anyone.

I would think you could finagle Sumo Wrestling in with the WWE stuff. Perhaps Guru is a bit skittish about associating himself with the fake stuff, by actually calling it a wrestling forum.
How about adding number of posts to the main index page?

I would like to see the rating system deleted.. I think people rarely use it, and when they do use it, they abuse it... They will vote 1 just to be spiteful that day or what not... To me it serves no purpose...
I would be interested in seeing some sort of post tracker system, to see who contributes the most to the boards, etc...
Another tracking thing could be the number of times a thread has been viewed.. Instead of ranking something, just looking to see how many times someone has viewed or returned to that thread will give you an idea if it is a good topic to visit or not...

I like the ranking system. I admit that I usually ignore it but when I'm looking through the index and see that 13 people have given a thread a 4.6 average ranking, you know that it is likely a valuable discussion.

I would be interested in seeing some sort of post tracker system, to see who contributes the most to the boards, etc... Board Contributors
On some boards, post counts tend to make some people feel like they need to post large amounts of worthless junk just to show they have a large post count. Quality over quantity anyday: Valuable post count thread
I can do without the ranking system. I find that if I read a post that has a one and it's an okay post (and I am extremely bored), I will give it a 5 just to balance it out. Otherwise, I pretty much read every post in every forum and don't even see the rankings.

Motley Crue, you shot yourself in the foot. Thinking you can get back at someone with ratings...
1. doesn't really hurt the other person, since it's anonymous and
2. holds you back as far as developing the social skills needed to post on this board. When you stick to the ratings attack strategy, you fail to learn vital skills, like humorous retort.

So, if I gave your post a 1 you wouldn't scratch your head and say "Dang, I wonder who thought my post had no value?"
Humorous retort? You don't need that in the Politics Forum. You just need to deflect all of the criticism onto Baldwin. Now, that's a vital skill.

Wrestling doesn't fit the definition of sport anyhow as it has a predetermined outcome. Besides, WWE doesn't even have a Sports License anyhow, it has a Theatre License (true story).
