0 Subject: Link to most recent post

When looking through emails I had received from the_abbott (who recently passed away from ALS), I noticed one in which he suggested that the "Last Post" column could have a link which automatically scrolls the browser to the most recent post. At the time, I back-burnered the idea (it was last spring, during baseball drafting - when the auto-scroll feature probably would have been quite useful). But upon reflection this morning, I realized that implementation was almost trivial. So, in the_abbott's memory, I implemented it this morning.

The link will only operate for posts created after the time of the change. All other links will continue to work as before. You simply have another option now.

Appears to be working so far :)

I like it, and I think it's a nice tip of the cap to Simon.

Thanks Guru. Will really help for those L-O-N-G draft discussion threads.

This doesn't matter to me in the least, but I thought I would point it out just the same.

When you click the new fangled link and return, it is marked as previously read (purple instead of blue if you use the default colors like I do), but the actual thread link is not.

Ender -

That is not anything that Guru did, nor do I suspect it's anything he can do about. The two links are, in fact, different as far as your browser is concerned.

Your browser determines the color of a visited link. When you go to the last post on a thread, the URL is slightly different than the URL for the thread in general, so your browser does not recognize it as the same.

In other words, I cannot synchronize those link colors.

In addition, it looks like the IE browser doesn't distinguish between differing "last post" links to the same thread. In other words, after you use a "last post" link to a given thread, that link will continue to appear as a visited link, even when the last post changes.

Again, I don't think that's anything I can compensate for.

It does appear to work as desired with the Netscape browser. I haven't checked it with FireFox, or any of the other browser alternatives.

I figured as much. I assumed that they were in effect seperate links. I just didn't know if Guru used IE and was aware that it was even that way. Thanks for the explanations.

Guru,

Low priority request for something I kind of thought of on a whim. Please ignore it if you find it to be unworthy of programming time.

I frequent the football forum and lately I find we are talking about Ben Roethlisberger a lot. I thought it would be fun to have a button similar to the "Mientkiewicz Mangler" in the Baseball Forum, so that Big Ben's surname (or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof) could be easily pasted into any post.

Thanks, G.
