0 Subject: Post counter and member since...

A lot of forums have post counters and show how long someone has been a member of the board. I'm not sure it would be feasible to implement or add much value the board. I just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

Awesome idea. But I'd imagine not terribly fun to implement. Especially if you want to make it MadDog-proof.

yeah, would Guru be able to add up all over MadDog's posts into one username?

What is the point in having a post-counter? The only one I can think of is so people can say, "Look at me and how many posts I have." With a counter, some people get so wrapped up in the volume number of posts, they forget about quality.

As far as showing how long someone has been here, it breeds snobs. I see it on lots of forums that have the counters and members-since-dates. What does it matter if someone has been posting here for seven years or seven days? All that matters is if they contribute something positive to the community.

I was talking about quality of posts, but money is always nice too. =)

Some people do but then people start bashing them for doing it.

I think the whole idea of quality over quantity is overrated. Looking at the first page on the baseball forum I doubt there are too many "quality" posts. Most of it is mindless chatter which, IMO, is the heart and soul of a forum. I miss the days when we had Action threads reach 100 posts before night games even started.

I will agree with that. I should have put "some people" in my post above. Several forums I go to, people like to judge others by the number of posts they make. When I mentioned quality over quantity I was thinking of those same forums. You will see people post smilies after the last dozen posts (on forums that have those features) just to jack up their post-count. For me, threads with lots of chatter are usually the most enjoyable ones to participate in.

I also want to say that I reread my initial post above and didn't mean to come off sounding snobby. I can see where some people might be interested in viewing how often other people post.

Didn't mean to ignore this idea.

Regardless of the merits, it would be difficult to program reliably without going to a registration/log-in system. Currently, posters are tracked using only cookies, and those are not stable for many users, depending on operating system, browser, security settings, cookie cleanups, as well as multiple entry points for many users (work, home, etc.)

I developed the cookie reset program for GuruPatrons, so that those users could recover a recognized ID when it was lost. But that's a voluntary fix that many people don't bother with (or even know about), and there are still some GuruPatron users who just don't seem to be able to retain cookies for whatever reason.

Whenever the idea of a mandatory registration/login system was broached in the past, there was always a lot of resistance from many users. This particular idea doesn't seem to be a strong enough impetus to overcome those objections.

I guess I could simply track posting activity by handle, without regard to ID number. This could be subject to abuse, however.

I already do keep a log of all posting activity. I suppose I could write a simple program that would scan that log over a range of dates and count the number of posts for each handle. I'm not sure it's worth the effort, however.

I'd be curious to see some posting stats... i.e. who posts the most, perhaps broken down by forum. I may even be the grand champion!
