0 Subject: Wrestling vs. General Fantasy Sports

Posted by: Rex Davidson

Even though pro wrestling isn't really a sport, perhaps the time has come to give it a Forum Topic Section all it's own. That way General Fantasy Sports can be dedicated to, well, General Fantasy Sports.

Historically, in the time before Pro Wrestling filled up that forum, it was pretty bare IIRC. Occasionally someone would post about soccer----BOOM it got its own Forum. Occasionally they'd post about Horse Racing-----BOOM it got its own Forum. Same with the Simulation Sports Forum.

What would be left to talk about in the General Fantasy Sports Forum if Pro Wrestling was given its much deserved own Forum? :-)

I believe Guru already mentioned he didn't want to give its own seperate forum and it was fine where it was.

I'm not sure what sport would be discussed in that forum.

And I agree, wrestling deserves its own forum but I actually like it where it is. We've nurtured that poor, sad forum into a thriving place of beauty.

Agreed. I think. Does a vote in the Forum Developments forum carry over to the General Fantasy Sports Forum? Or, to the heretofore undeveloped Pro Wrestling Forum?

I wonder how many hits the General forum gets in a given year vs. say the Basketball forum.

Look, you drug half the posters from the "wrestling" forum into forum developments. Now we will never get this place cleaned up. Damn wrestling fans.

The best solution is probably to simply rename the general fantasy sports forum as the Wrestling Forum. There really hasn't been any demonstrated need for a general FS forum.

Guru, can we vote on that before that happens?

I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda fond of it being the General forum. That said, having it called the RWF is huge too.

I'd love this scenario:

You all vote on it, deciding to keep the existing name.

Guru publicly agrees.

The next day it is renamed.

Oh yeah, its on brutha...WOAH!

if Guru turns heel he's going to need backing from RSF if he intends to topple the power of the RWF.

The rumor is that current title holder Species plans to "show up" in the new Rotoguru Wrestling Forum with his General Fantasy Sports title in hand, where he subsequently trashes it, and starts a new era of RWFFFFFFFFF.

Guru won't turn. Will he?

Wow! Which is not to be confused with W.o.W. It seems you wrasslin' types like to talk up a storm.

13. BTW, Tree, who said anyone could stick pictures up on my thread, anyway? Besides, it just supports my position that wrasslin' isn't really a sport. What self respecting athlete would wear a boa with tights. I shudder.

As to 21. Rex Davidson is someone who has been active for a number of years in Fantasy Games for real sports such as Basketball and Golf. (I'm sure I'll hear something back on that last one).

You want something that might be considered General Fantasy Sports? I posted one from a TSN Board (as they call it) I started yesterday:

TSN Star System - Fair or Phony?

I always find it ironic that anyone who loves playing "fantasy games" can critique wrestling for not being "real".

Its all just entertainment kids. Relax.

And there ain't a golfer (or basketball player) in the whole wide world with the athleticism of many of our favorite wrestlers (Khali, Henry types excluded). No contest. But if you don't watch it, you'll never understand. And for that, we forgive your ignorance on the subject.

Find me a golfer that can do this...

Don't get me wrong. Tights clearly have their place. As, no doubt, do boas. But surely you agree that any outfit with both a boa and tights is clearly a fashion faux pas. No golfer would ever make that mistake. OK, maybe Camillo Villegas. But that would be it.

27. Watched your video. Most of it anyway. Very entertaining. Right up there with topless women oilwrestling which is also entertaining and also not a sport. However, you're right about one thing. Other than John Daly, there's likely no golfer who would want to do any of that. Even though the belts they win are slightly more attractive than the plaid jacket awarded to the winner of the Heritage Classic.

This thread is hilarious. I say that's more of a Guru swerve though if you ask me....like when Shawn Michaels superkicked Hogan for the WM21 match.

Rex - one thing you have to give us credit for with our wrestling league -- the WWE basically copied our game with some changes to scoring and called it their own. We've done this for 4 years now (or has it been longer?)! RWF rules!

We've done this for 4 years now (or has it been longer?)! RWF rules!

looks like we started things the first week of January in 2003, four-and-a-half years ago.

the original owners were:
1)Goat Locker
2)Mr Nice Guy
3)Species
4)Farn
5)Mike D
6)Wiggs
7)mIST
8) Tree
9) MITH
10)BH
11)Great One
12) THK

1.1 Goat Locker - Brock Lesnar
1.2 Mr Nice Guy - Scott Steiner
1.3 Species - Triple H
1.4 Farn - Booker T
1.5 Mike D - Kurt Angle
1.6 wiggs - Batista
1.7 mIst - Shawn Michaels
1.8 Tree - Stone Cold Steve Austin
1.9 Mattingly - Chris Jericho
1.10 Blue Hen - The Rock
1.11 Great One - Undertaker
1.12 Tarheel Kid - Chris Benoit

six of those guys aren't even in the WWE anymore. a couple more are out for quite some time with serious injuries.

heck - let's keep going with that:
2.1 Tarheel Kid - Eddie Guerrero
2.2 Great One - Rob Van Damn
2.3 Blue Hen - Edge
2.4 Mattingly - Trish Stratus
2.5 Tree - Randy Orton
2.6 mIST - John Cena
2.7 wiggs - Goldberg
2.8 Mike D - Kane
2.9 Farn - Big Show
2.10 Species - Christian
2.11 Mr. Nice Guy - Bill Demott
2.12 Goat Locker - Rikishi

seven of those guys - including the late Guerrero - are no longer in the WWE.

it gets worse in round three - only four of the guys drafted are still active WWE wrestlers. round four isn't much different - only five are still active in the WWE. round five has four guys still active, including Helms, who recently suffered a broken neck.

and it pretty much goes that way the rest of the draft.

my favorite pick of that draft is probably Blue Hen taking Tough Enough John at 8.3 - of course, he is now known as the multi-time tag and IC champ, Johnny Nitro.

btw, the whole draft is here...

Conversely, MIST had Shawn/Cena. What a team that would have been the last couple years. So who knows.

blue hen had the steals of the draft, getting both members of "Team Angle" - soon to be known as (and currently known as) The World's Greatest Tag Team - Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas at picks 3.10 and 4.03.

lmao - Farn thinking with his 2nd brain - Stacy Kiebler in round 3 and Gail Kim (woo baby!) in round 4.

Trish Stratus taken ahead of the likes of: Randy Orton, John Cena, The Big Show, Kane, Goldberg and Christian.

Man, I had some vision. Edge, Haas, Benjamin, Nitro. Makes me sad I haven't followed wrestling the last couple years.

There are two things that need to be mentioned in this thread. The first is the RotoGuru fantasy league that preceded this league. We drafted five wrestlers each and got one point per win (nothing else). My first picks were Buh Buh Ray Dudley and William Regal. Ugh.

Then there was the masterstroke. This league has two things that are rare in fantasy leagues of any sport: a straight (non-snake) draft, and a system to determine draft order that takes keeper strength into account. Kudos to the league for innovation. It led to this wonderful scenario.

The keeper rules meant I was likely to get the 11th pick. The straight draft meant I'd have to stay there. Though they'd scored a lot of points, my keepers were only so-so. That's when I hatched my master plan.

I picked up Tim Brown (yes, THAT Tim Brown) off waivers, and announced that I was keeping him. It was a great play, since his zero points would lower the value of my keepers. While I would lose an actual keeper, it pushed me up 5 spots in the first round. And the 2nd. And the 3rd.

For a few (mostly legitimate) reasons, the transaction was disallowed, and frustrated at the future of my team, I quit the league. But the league survived and even thrived, which is a testament to more than a few passionate hard workers keeping score, doing standings, and participating in the chatter. Good work, guys!

Wrestling is for 9-13 year old boys. C'mon, how old are you guys?

Isn't WWE the most watched show on cable television? and also the highest rated about the all-important (to advertisers) demographic of males from ages 18-34?

Yes. It is.
