0 Subject: Suggestion for the site.

Posted by: weykool

Many times the Daily Blurb has interesting information or something that it would be nice to add a comment.

The suggestion is to make a comment link for each daily blurb that we could post our own observations/thoughts and might spark more comments from other users.
The only thing that would show on the main page would be the link with any and all comments. viewable by accessing the link.

I have often thought the same thing, and at times thought about starting a forum topic with the info from that day's blurb.

How about Guru post the daily blurb in this forum and link to it from the main site. Just a thought, as I check here almost daily, but don't remember to go to the main page that often.

That's a great idea. The blurb at the top of the message forum page would be cool.

Agree. Or at least some way to see the blurb from http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/view.pl. I often miss the blurbs.

Interesting concept.

I'll have to think about how to best implement this. To do it well, some reprogramming will be needed.

I have mentioned this on numerous occasions in the past and I'm glad it's finally getting its warranted attention.

Guru, your posts are always timely, for the most part interesting and never unentertaining. Please allow us to address some of those items you bring up.

That would be great, because I - like many others I'm sure - have this the message forum bookmarked and don't consistently hit the main page.

Probably don't need a new thread for each blurb, but maybe you can just have a running "Daily Blurb" thread or maybe a new thread each month/week depending on the traffic. I'm guessing it would get bumped up often enough to make it obvious in the forum on a daily basis and remind us to visit it.

The problem is that the blurbs often cross topic areas, so I don't want to put them in any particular "regular" (i,e, hoops, baseball, etc.) forum area. I also don't necessarily want to set up a separate area just for blurbs, because that might tend to get ignored as well.

I'd like to develop some means by which they could be accessible (or are least noticed) from any forum area. I have some ideas on how to approach that - but they probably involve more than 10 minutes of programming - although maybe not, after I mull this over for awhile.

You have the link to "View the Forum Registry." I think a link to "View the Daily Blurb" added would work. Then again you already have the "link" for the Blurb under the Other Rotoguru pages.

The only thing that might sweeten it would be after the "View the Daily Blurb" link if it maybe also said "Today's Topic(s)". That would bridge the gap of the multiple sports.

Just rambling.

A link won't work. I rarely think about that. The main forum page at http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/view.pl is pretty barren and is the one I have bookmarked.

Alright, a "link" in the form of a large picture containing the topic......like the Ads.

All you have to do is click the Rotoguru header logo and it takes you to the Daily Blurb/ Main page.

When I remember to use it, that's the click I make.

What about a scrolling box at the top or the bottom forum list. It wouldn't have to be inside one of the forums, but on the main page of them. I honestly haven't seen one in a year because I have the main forum page as my fav.

Here is a possible design for a scroller, which would be inserted at the top of some forum pages (perhaps always on the overall forum index page, and as an occasional ad replacement on other "view" pages.) Clicking on this would open up a standard message thread page with the blurb as the opening post, with opportunities for comments. I'd probably put these in a separate forum area just for blurbs.

Does this work OK in all browsers? It's JavaScript based, so I think it should.

working just fine in IE8.

Only issue I had was getting through all of the blurb before it scrolled up on me. Maybe just another half second delay or so on the scrolling?

Love the idea though.

I think the scrolling also pauses if you hover your mouse over the area.

I will go on the record as very much NOT in favor of scrolling. I hate it on TV, not fond of it here.

Like the idea of having the quote of the day posted on the Boards.

Love it Guru.

Zen [22] (and others who dislike scrolling) - I think the conflict here comes from the desire by some to have the blurb automatically "confront" them without having to click on a link to seek it out. Complete blurbs are usually too long to appear as an auxiliary item on a page. Scrolling is a way to allow the full blurb to display without consuming extraordinary space.

Those who don't want to read the scrolling text are always free to ignore it - or to click on the area to open up a static version.

I can easily fiddle with the scrolling speed and/or delay.

Thus far, a scrolling interface seems like the best solution for this idea - and one that should be fairly easy to implement.

Btw, this also works out great because for some reason, rotoguru2 is considered gambling on my work server but rotoguru1 isn't. So I can see the blurb this way instead of trying to remember when I get home.

All righty, then.

I just implemented something.

Scrolling blurbs will appear at the top of the main forum index page.

Clicking on an item will open a thread with that item. They are all contained in a new topic area exclusively for blurbs.

Let me know what adjustments should be considered.

Seems to work OK in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. In IE, everything works but the linking to blurb thread. Not sure why, but probably a security issue in IE to protect us from ourselves. I'll have to look into workarounds there.

I don't have Opera, so don't know about any issues with that browser.

I have to say that this was a great idea by weykool. I have often wanted to comment on something that was said but saw no obvious way to do so. I am also blocked from anything Guru but the forums at work and often forget to check the blurb later. A great improvement to the site

I'm not quite satisfied with the layout on the main forum index page. I think the addition of the scrolling blurb at the top pushes the listing of the various threads too far down - and on my monitor, only leaves about 5 threads visible (without manually scrolling down.)

I've tried several alternatives, and I'd like your feedback.

Current version: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/displayall-4.pl

Alternative 1: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/displayall-5.pl

Alternative 2: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/displayall-6.pl

These alternatives are both variations on the same theme. Which do you prefer? And, do you have other ideas? One thought is that I could reduce the height of the scrolling window. Not sure if that's a good idea or not. Here's an example with the height reduced by 25%:

Alternative 2 @75%: http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/displayall-7.pl
(The bottom border of the scroll window is missing, but I can fix that if this is the direction to go.) Is this ample height?

I like Alt-1.

You could also safely reduce the font size of the "Hover the cursor...& leave comments" text down a point or two.

I prefer choice 1 as well.

I'd 2nd RSF suggestion to reduce that font size. And heck, after a few weeks you could probably remove the "hover the cursor" sentence because by then regular users will remember that feature on their own. That would free up another line of code to move up.
