0 Subject: Adding Facebook 'Like' buttons etc

As part of last week's new release by Facebook, all over the web now, I see Facebook 'Like' buttons on certain websites and Facebook 'Recommend' or 'Share' buttons on certain articles and blogs. These buttons allow users to share links with their friends on their Facebook profile. Just bringing it to your attention as maybe a way to get folks to help promote this site. The code to add this button has been publicized.

Here is what you would get below.

You could also join the Rotoguru facebook page...

There is none. I never thought there was a need or a useful purpose to be served.

What would that purpose be? Would setting up a facebook page for RotoGuru be likely to drive any new traffic here?

Meanwhile, I haven't looked at all into the new "recommend" or "share" button options. I'm only a light user of facebook. Perhaps a "power user" could suggest how those buttons might be useful?

The FB group is unofficial, of course: Link

It can't hurt to get more members--perhaps even to set up an official FB group which could certainly drive some traffic.

I set up a simple one for my company, which took about an hour all told.

J and I started a Rotoguru "fan page" on facebook a long time ago. It currently has 20 members, all of whom you will recognize, as well as some very uninteresting banter.

There's no real purpose for a fan page, other than the idea that you can send a message to all fans at once (I think; I've never actually done this, although Arby's sends me messages about twice a month). I'm also a fan of the "Oliver Perez Unofficial Fan Club." No, I'm not kidding.

Using Like functionality is much different. With one click, a phrase like "PeterN is a fan of the Dirty Dozen draft thread on Rotoguru.com" will appear in Pete's news feed, which is read by about 100 of his friends. This would almost assuredly drive up traffic to Rotoguru.com, although it's unclear exactly how often people would "like" threads. Based on thread ratings on the RMF and the Mientkiewicz tool, I'm guessing people would use it for a while, then stop.

PD, it took you an hour to set up a facebook group? How did you spend the other 56 minutes?

I agree that a Rotoguru.com FB page is probably not needed since this forum is already an interactive social site where we'd comment on the various posts anyway.

When you click the FB 'like' on other websites now, on your personal profile it is noted in the same manner it is if you 'like' someone's FB status update, picture, video, etc. I am only assuming the recommend or share would work in the same manner.

For example:
I did a 'like' on the FB icon on ESPNNewYork.com.

On any of my friend's News Feeds, it appears cronologically with all other feed info. It shows up as 'Jeff likes ESPNNewYork.com' with a hyperlink to that site. So it may stir interest up for others in my circle of FB friends to then check it out.

PD spent the other 56 minutes working on trades that would drive BH crazy.

Heh.

A company FB page takes a little more time. It isn't just a regular group page.
