0 Subject: Migration to new server

RotoGuru.net and all affiliated domains are migrating to a new server over the next week.

Recently, traffic has grown to a level that, at peak times, has gridlocked the server. Three times this happened on a Sunday morning between 11am-noon. The other time was around 6pm on a Tuesday.

The traffic growth is most signficantly at dailybaseballdata.com, which is getting more than double the traffic compared with a year ago. Peak periods occur within an hour or so of the start of the bulk of MLB games each day.

The new server will have 4GB of RAM (the old server had only 1GB), as well as a new processor and an updated OS. I think it should easily be able to handle the workload. So far, dailybaseballdata.com has already migrated successfully.

The RotoGuru domains will probably be moved on Thursday or Friday, depending on the timing of the copying of files at the server site in Dallas. When I make the final cutover for this forum's domain (rotoguru1.com), I'll need to take down the forum for an hour or so in order to move the most recent files and ensure that everything stays in sync. As we approach that time, I'll post a notice.

Guru, are you sure its not directly related to the RWF draft? :)

The forum move is complete. However, until the rest of rotoguru1.com has been fully transitioned, there will be a few idiosyncrasies.

First, you’ll notice that the URL will generally start with the new IP address (69.13.158.154) instead of rotoguru1.com. That is only a temporary measure, and should resolve itself by the end of Friday.

In the meantime, you will not be able to reset your GuruPatron ID, and your posting ID will be different than what you traditionally posted under at rotoguru1. When the transition is complete, your ID should revert. Until then, there will be a few potential glitches:
  • Your GuruPatron designation will not display when you post
  • Your ability to self-edit posts made prior to the move will be constrained
  • You may find that the spam filter will be more aggressive with your posts, particularly if you are posting links or unlinked URLs.
If you are unable to post something, feel free to shoot me an email and I can suggest ways to get it through the spam filter. (I will not discuss those measures publicly. I don’t want to let the spammers know how to thwart the system.)

Anything the mods should know in the interim?

If you need to mod anything, you should insert the new IP address in the URL (69.13.158.154) in place of rotoguru1.com

I think everything should flow OK from there.

Once the new server is recognized as rotoguru1.com, you can revert to the standard URL.

By now, I think the forum migration should have taken full effect, and all functions should be operating normally. Look at the URL for the current page, and if it starts with http://rotoguru1.com then you are all set. (If it still starts with http://69.13.158.154, then your ISP is really slow at updating its DNS nameserver lookups!)

There appear to be a few glitches left to sort out in email processing - which has little impact unless you are trying to send an email to moderators@rotoguru1.com. That may or may not get through. But it will be solved.
