Subject: A puzzle for Sleuths with Netscape

I've noticed recently that threads which have been edited sometimes (maybe always) appear slightly different after the edit. The original thread fills the width of the screen, but the revised page is slightly narrower, aligning with the right margin of the text area in the "Post a message" section at the bottom.
Even more curiously, this seems to occur with Netscape, but not with Internet Explorer. When I view the narrower thread in MSIE, it still fills the screen width.
I've saved a before (wide) and after (narrow) version of a recently edited page. The only obvious difference is that I added one letter in the last item ("fo" becomes "for"). (Yes, I know, I still misspelled seventh.)
I've compared the source code for the two pages, and I can't find any other differences.
Questions:- Do other Netscape users also see the difference in the display width?
- Can anyone see the difference in the page source code that could be causing this?
Obviously, this is not a major glitch. But I would like to figure it out.
A puzzlement. |

I see the difference on my home Mac; I'm running Netscape Communicator 4.5-9823.
The narrow post is about 14.5 cm and the wider one is about 17 cm. Haven't a clue as to why.

Line 0152 of the code for the "narrow" version has a colspan value (colspan=3) that differs from the "wide" version (colspan=2). You'll find this just above:

The colspan=3 seems to be the cause of the narrower response column. Changing the value to colspan=2 produced a page identical to the wide version ... at least it worked for me.

Thank, Mario. That's probably it!
Now I wonder why MSIE overlooks the difference?
