0 Subject: Banner Clicking

On a trial basis, I'm trying something new.

If you click on one of the banners at the top of a forum index (the page which links to the various threads), banners on the index page will be eliminated for the following 24 hours. In its place will be a short sentence thanking you for supporting the sponsors of RotoGuru.com.

Currently, the only banners impacted by this exclusion are those at the top of a forum index. Banners at the top of threads are not yet included - although if this works well, I can sweep them in. Also, the small "button" ad graphics alongside the post form (at the bottom of each page) are not impacted.

In order for this feature to work, you must have JavaScript enabled, and you must allow cookies to be permanently saved. For Web TV users, I'm not sure how this will work. My guess is that your system will lose its click memory if you turn it off (because I believe Web TV only stores cookies temporarily).

Since the click memory is stored in a cookie on your computer, if you use more than one computer, each one will be tracked independently. Your ID# and name do not have an impact on this feature.

We'll see how it goes.

For the banner at the top of this page, (address below) I got an error (shown below URL).

That's just the ad server hiccupping. Happens occasionally. Ignore it.

To activate the banner-free feature, you need to click a banner at the top of a forum index. Thread banners are not yet programmed to accommodate this.

The Blue Nile banner worked as you stated. This will be a nice "reminder" IMO that I haven't visited a site lately. Some simply don't interest me so I don't visit, but others (like ebay)I like to visit often.

I have always wondered if Guru got any credit if we "bought in" to the product that the banner is advertising.

For instance if we register at a website or buy something on line does Guru get credit if it was a click through from this site??

Occasionally, I have an ad arrangement with purchase incentives (i.e., if you go to their site and buy something, I get a "commission"). But that is very rare, and none of my current ads are on that arrangement.

Great so you won't get anything for the $2000 I just blew at the Casino ad banner. ;)

Thanx.

Banners at the top of threads should now all be included in the new click arrangement.

Just some feedback: I have found that this new feature definitely seems to have me clicking more.

However, if my self-analysis is correct, it is not as much that I am motivated not to see the ads, and therefore click every time I boot up in the morning. Rather, it is the fact that there is noticeable visual difference between seeing an ad and your message. This visual difference actually reminds me to click - kind of like a knot in my handkerchief! In fact, seeing the message for the rest of the day actually seems to motivate me to click more, whereas I would just instinctively ignore ad banners.

Basically, it works for me. Hope it works for others too!

I just want to reitterate Mike's statements.

I think the change is a great idea and I don't click in order not to the banners but I am reminded that they are not there and when they appear, reminded again to click. I also now know that i can click multiple banners in a day and seperate credit for each is given. Now that I think about it, it only makes sense but with the "disappearing act" I know which ones to click and which ones I have. I've click so many banners in the last few days that if everyone clicked in the same manner I did you should see your banner clicks go through the roof.

Definate step in the right direction! Also, its an easy way to get to flipside.com. Kills 2 birdsw with one stone! ;)

Just another remark, I like the new arrangement, both in that seeing the banner reminds me to click, and also having the banner gone loads the page faster.

Hope everyone is aware of and participating in this!

Yes Guru, great development. I love to click ads, even before the recent modification! They allow me to open new windows to read e-mail, go to Google, and load up RotoGuru "support" sites ;-)
