0 Subject: Voluntary Payment Poll

The following poll is a first step is assessing possible ways to fund the costs associated with producing RotoGuru.com.

Assume that any payments made under this approach would be strictly voluntary. General feedback would be regularly provided so that everyone knows the current financial score. All site features would remain free and open, and the site would exist pretty much as it does currently.

A secure online payment facility would be set up (probably using PayPal) which would accept credit card payments.

Please be as honest as you can. Your answers are anonymous. I want to get an accurate appraisal of the viability of this approach.

To help you frame your response, here are some figures:

Server costs currently run about $5000 per year, which equates to roughly $100/week, or $470 per month.

In the past two weeks, 8705 messages have been posted under 562 different user names. 136 of the names had only one message posted. At the other end, the top 100 posters had an average of 60 message posted over the 2 weeks, or about 4-5 per day. A total of 150 users posted at least 15 messages over the period (one per day).

In the past, I have estimated that the number of lurkers (never posting) is in the range of 400-500, but this is a difficult count to get an accurate handle on.

If 100 people were willing to voluntarily contribute each month that they are active, an average monthly donation of about $5 would be required. When annualized, this sounds like a big number. When compared to the daily cost of a cup (or two) of coffee, it seems reasonable. But you will have to be the ultimate judges of relative value, and of willingness to pay.

With that as background, here's the poll:

RotoGuru Poll
If an online facility were available for voluntary payments to keep RotoGuru.com available (and free), what is the most you be likely to contribute for each month you use the site?

Nothing
Nothing, but only because I would/could not make payments online.
$1 per month
$2 per month
$3 per month
$4 per month
$5 per month
$6-9 per month
$10 per month
more than $10 per month, if needed

It's nice to see all the support for Dave, which is what this is. We all trust him enough to send cash so he can continue to run this site. I'm assuming his interest is to have fun and that he enjoys the interactions as much as we do. If making a profit were the motive he obviously would be funding the site and doing whatever necessary to grow it and make $$. That said, the less "managing" of the $$ side of things the better. Also, I for one never want to hear on the boards someone whining about "paying" for whatever reason, ie being censored, rebuked, having a low thread rating, being left off a standings list or whatever. If this goes through, remember this is voluntary and does not entitle anyone to anything more than they cuurently have with respect to this site. Some new management scheme could be implemented with respect to this site the day after I donate, that I might not agree with, but that would not give me any more right than I currently have to complain. No more right even than a non contributor. Everyone will need to remember this.

I do feel however that voluntary donations will only work for awhile and is not the best way to continue this site in the future. An initial influx of funds should allow Guru to buy server time for another year, but I think during that time it would be appropriate to seek new funding opportunities for the site as well. I believe donations will diminish over time and direct selling of merchandise may bring an initial surge of orders but will drop dramatically after that as well. The donations will probably take away from the gurupies ability to purchase merchandise as well.

I am not an advertising person, but it seems to me that a corporate sponsor of some kind would be the best solution. Have them provide the server tools in exchange for free advertising on the site. It would not be too hard to collect demographics of our community. Whats wrong with having say "the official beer of RotoGuru.com" or something. Don't know if the numbers are there or not for an advertiser, but it would seem to me to be a cheap way for an advertiser to do direct marketing to a target group. Especially for a product that is based on brand loyalty.

I would like to see advertising or some (low maintenance) revenue source pay for server tools etc, and maybe devote gurupie expertise/donations to helping Dave develop/upgrade/maintain new tools/games/prizes etc.

Enough rambling, just some thoughts.
