Subject: Pickoff Prizes & Philliephan

The winners of this year's pickoff will suddenly find themselves in the possession of a hard-earned windfall. Unfortunately, it won't be me this year.
I have a simple idea. Why not donate 10% of your winnings to a charity in Philliephan's (a.k.a. Paul Scheirer) name, and have a card sent to his family? It would be a great way to help someone out, and it would remind his family how much he meant to people who didn't even really know who he was. (I could even see telling Guru to keep 10% as a donation to his site.) |

What a difference a few months makes. Suggest doing a good deed, get ratings of 1.
Oh well, BUTT.

I am in the top 20 but I do not think i have a chance at the top. If I make it, I think the charity is a great idea. I will be doing that. hmmm maybe a little help from the current champ would take me to the top.

You sure you want my help? I've been doing nothing but going backwards. In fact, I haven't even made picks the last two weeks. (Two weeks ago, my grandmother died... last week I figured why bother?)

In that case, you've gained on me in each of the past two weeks...

A noble idea, Sludge...
I apologize for the thread hijack to follow:
I haven't been following commentary about the pickoff game that closely, but I used a "system" that derived winning chances based on point spreads. In the past it was moderately successful (top 10, two years ago, top 25, last year), but this season the system is performing miserably.
A couple of weeks ago, I checked all of my picks for the season and noticed that teams that were favored by between 60-70% of the participants had gone 40-10. This is roughly where games with spreads between 3.5-6.5 points would be compared. I've spent the entire season getting negative- thirtied to death. A statistical aberration I guess.
Sometimes it's just bad luck.
My apologies for the hijack...
Nice idea about the donation.

Predicting using the point spread has definitely not been the way to go this year. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

Whatever jungleman's strategy is must work, though. He had a 5th overall finish last year.

I think I want to adopt Toral's strategy for this week whatever that was. If the Rams win tonight he will be a perfect 15/15 with the KC win doubled, for an incredible 940 pts. I think that accomplishment alone should win a prize. WTG Toral!

Actually, it will be 990 points for Toral if the Rams win tonight (you forgot the 50 point bonus, StLCards). Although Guru mentions in today's blurb Toral's score breaking 1000 if the Rams win...hmmm, impress Guru - win extra points! :)

It's official. Congrats Toral! What an accomplishment. It's too bad you didn't double Tennessee for the maximum possible score. Looks like you'll have to settle for that measly 3-digit total...

Bad arithmetic on my part (in yesterday's blurb). 990 is correct, which exceeds the previous high score for any week in the last two years by more than 100 pts.
Notice who finished with the second best result of the week? She's cleaning my clock!

Thank you, guys. StLCards, I used a dynamic stochastic model evaluating developing team strengths during the season and emphasizing particular offensive and defensive matchups, tested by repeated iterations. In layman's terms, I guessed.

After missing both of the division finals, I just about make it all back by doubling the Pats. Should finish top 35 or so, which is pretty good considering how badly I started!
Another "thanks" to the Guru for a maddening, wonderful game.

Oh, so close! I finished third, one spot out of the money. Why, tduncan, did you also have to double the Pats!? Seriously, though, congrats to jungleman for running away with the title and to tduncan for winning the competition for a hard-fought 2nd place.

7th place! I'm happy - not! Rams lost :(
but the pats did deserve it.
Thanks Guru for Pickoff. Frustrating game, but fun.
