As expected, the Texans took Tony Boselli with the first pick. I thought it was kind of funny to hear the ESPN commentators say "Houston is now on the clock". Um, who else would be on the clock?

AFC Central, just like expected.
Some very nice talent, thus far. 3-4 D with Dom Capers too. I'm glad they're gonna be out of the Steeler division even next year.

The Jets and Jaguars aren't done losing players.
Jets CB Marcus Coleman and Jaguars DT Seth Payne will be taken shortly, along with Ravens WR/KR Jermaine Lewis.

Looks like they'll have good lines on both sides of the ball. Should do well for being somewhat competitive next year.

sosa, agreed. Both JAX and NYJ have salary cap issues and the ESPN commentators have mentioned that it's not likely that either team will take any of their selected players back.

A hell of a lot better than the Bucs could do back in '76.

Yay! Take him out of the Central.
Lewis is a Steeler killer.
...Sharpe goes out on a limb and picks them to win the south.

LOL! Sterling Sharpe just said, "I think [the Houston Texans] could win the AFC South this year." Obviously saying it more for the crowd than anything. ;)

smallwhirled, they were just talking about how the NFL is essentially set up now so that you build up a team, make a run for the title, then deal with the consequences for the years afterwards.

Texans were required to select 30 players or spend just over $27M. They've spent $37M already.

I have to partially disagree,
I think you can beat the cap if you manage yourself right. I believe that a team does not have to hit rock bottom...like the Cowboys and 49ers did, and the way that the Ravens could this upcoming year with an entirely new defense.
If you lose your free agents, but draft well....and don't overpay some of your guys, then you I think that you can stay near .500 even in the "off-years."

True, but you're not likely going to win a title that way either. Your highs will be making the playoffs (not the title games) and your lows will be your .500 years. Most teams would prefer to win the Super Bowl (or make the Super Bowl) and then have a couple of sub-.500 years. It's just the nature of the biz. Just look at Tony Dungy getting fired. The playoffs is not enough for teams. They want the Super Bowl and it's really difficult for teams to make it to the Super Bowl without getting hit by the cap down the road.

Also, losing FA's hurts teams most of the time. And not overpaying your players causes them to leave because they think management is too cheap. It's all about the money now. Anyhow, I'm out for now. I'll have to see how the Texans faired when I get back.

Okay, I'm biased here, KKB. I pretty much described a team like the Steelers.
I still feel that you can do it the way that I described though.
A perfect cycle would be, build a young and solid team...but then once you're good, pick and choose which high-priced guys you want, and replace the others. Then it just becomes cyclic. There are teams in the NFL that have this make-up (i.e. look at some of the teams WAY under the cap, but had a good year last year).
There is one thing that will happen, IMO...and that is that teams will not get into the situation that these teams are in now. It's just stupid as a GM to have to firesale or restructure your entire teams' contracts.

No, KKB...you have to let some of those guys go, or you'll end up like the Ravens. Just can't do it that way, IMO.

Won't the renegotiate some of these top guys...or trade them away for more picks?
Glenn->Dallas for picks and players seems doable.

not sure, Culdeus...but it seems feasible
I just laugh when I see that the Yucs left R. McDaniel unprotected.
My dad and I used to always talk about how he and Jeff Christy were washed up. What happened when the came to the Yucs...they forgot how to run the football because they can't run-block. Funny, at least to me.

So I was wondering...what's the significance (or even the point) of the pick order in a one-team expansion draft. Couldn't the Texans just submit a big list and say, "Hey, here's who we want. Draft over."

When a team has a player selected, that team then has the option of pulling a player back that they left unprotected.

no, see the expansion draft rules, rule 2 applies, and it also answers KKB's question from message 1 as to why Houston was "on the clock". The variable involved was that after Houston selected a player from a team, that team had the chance to remove a player from their unprotected list. But the bottom line is that today was just a formality, it was pretty well known over the last few days who the first 8 selections would be. There were plenty of back room discussion and deals and such ever since the expansion lists came out, so all the teams and players involved knew what would happen today.

Seriously, though, thanks to both guys. In sosa's defense, his post was only 4 minutes after yours, Sludge - he could very easily have been searching for the link and composing his post in that amount of time, so I think it's a good possibility he never saw your post.

I don't know what anyone else around here does, but the first thing I do when I post a piece of information (like here, or like the Gruden to Tampa info) is check to be sure I didn't just repeat someone else. I consider it just a matter of courtesy because the original poster quite often gets overlooked. And as Bungers pointed out, it ain't just me.

To answer the question from 33, 31 was in fact invisible to me. It was probably 16:58 when I opened the thread. So Raz is quite accurate. I humbly apologize to you O Mighty Sustainer Sludge, it's probably my fault for trying to do several things at once, I don't always post a message immediately after getting caught up on scanning a thread. Had I posted exactly identical information I would have just deleted it. Instead I just left it since I posted additional content to what was in 31, I wasn't trying to steal your spotlight or anything.
And to prevent this post from being a total waste of everyone's time, here's the full list of Houston's picks, as far as I can tell it hasn't been posted here yet:
1.Jacksonville Jaguars OT Tony Boselli 2.New York Jets OT Ryan Young 3.New York Jets CB Aaron Glenn 4.Jacksonville Jaguars DT Gary Walker 5.Baltimore Ravens LB Jamie Sharper 6.Baltimore Ravens WR/KR Jermaine Lewis 7.New York Jets CB Marcus Coleman 8.Jacksonville Jaguars DT Seth Payne 9.Washington Redskins OG Matt Campbell 10.New England Patriots S Matt Stevens 11.Cleveland Browns OG Jeremy McKinney 12.Philadelphia Eagles OT Ryan Schau 13.Seattle Seahawks KR Charlie Rogers 14.New England Patriots LS Sean McDermott 15.Arizona Cardinals DE Jabari Issa 16.Buffalo Bills WR Avion Black 17.Chicago Bears QB Danny Wuerffel 18.St. Louis Rams LB Brian Allen 19.Dallas Cowboys TE Johnny Huggins

Well, I've exhibited in the past that I'm not afraid to waste everyone's time bickering over pointless things, so why stop now, eh?
Why is it that when someone posts a price change thread that was beat by a minute and fails to remove it posthaste, at best they are politely reminded that they need to remove the thread and at worst are dragged over the coals. Yet here I'm merely suggesting that people re-read what was posted during the time they were composing a message to avoid duplication, and I get dragged over the coals... by having my "Sustainer" status held against me no less! As if helping Guru keep his site running is suddenly a bad thing.
I'm not suggesting in the least that you were trying to steal my "spotlight", as clearly that wasn't your (or anyone else's) intention when it happens. I was only stating that it was the second time in a span of a few hours that someone posted something that duplicated what I had posted earlier, and was expressing a little frustration over it. Maybe it's my background in academic research that makes me desire credit where credit is due, even on something as inane as a fantasy sports message board. Far be it from me to seriously suggest that Guru's message boards are inane. :)

Oh, and I had mixed feelings about the Saints not having any players drafted. They keep their "talent", but that nobody was picked shows the level of that talent.

Sludge, I appreciate your viewpoint, and since I don't have anything to do while I'm waiting for my parents to call back, I do have to say that sosa's post right after yours brought in a little additional info including a link to the rules and talk of "backroom discussions" which I, who haven't been following the draft too much, did not know about. Again, your post was fine, but at least in this situation, I felt the repeated post seemed to have some additional information as well.

BMC I see them already up to 41Mil in cap used. Obviously with a full draft this will go up. The 41 Mil number could be swung down to 33-34 if they can extend some deals here and there. FYI total cap room this year is 71.7 Mil.
Clearly they have no #1WR/RB/QB yet and with not that much money to work with I think they will have to skimp esp. in the WR department. Looks like they don't have a blitzing DL or OLB either, but I am not too familiar with all these guys.
Their bench might redefine the words "paper thin"

I just read on ESPN.com that if the Texans make the Playoffs this year, they will lose 7 of their 14 scheduled picks in the 2003 Amateur Draft. God, THAT sucks. You basically have to shoot for a 6 or 7 win season as your ULTIMATE Goal. 7 extra picks is just too many to give up.
I know, I know--it's not like Kent Graham and James Allen are gonna drive them to the top of the divsion.
