Subject: RIFC - Draft
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Aug 13, 2004, 12:23
This thread will be used for discussion during the RIFC draft.
First, a few useful links: Draft recap in pick order Draft grid by team & position
Here is the draft order: 1 culdeus 2 Perm Dude 3 TB 4 Sludge 5 leggestand 6 Challenger 7 Mike V 8 Taxman 9 Ender 10 CanEHDian Pride 11 deepsnapper 12 Motley Crue 13 Guru 14 GoatLocker
The clock will start on Monday morning. It will initially be set at 8 hours, with a moratorium from approx. midnight-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. The clock will be relaxed or eliminated on weekends. We'll discuss that later in the week, as we see how progress is going. We need to average about one round per day, so we cannot afford to have many picks time out.
People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. This applies only to GoatLocker and culdeus. The software does not handle it this way automatically, but I can override if the situation arises. In other words, people at the endpoints don't get a double time limit to make their 2 picks. Both picks must be made within one time limit period.
We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.
If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can deputize another manager to make the pick for you. There is a way to do this in the Kafenatid software. You can also always email your pick queue to me in advance. (I am automatically allowed to enter a pick for anyone, so you don't need to deputize me.) As long as you put "RIFC queue" in the subject line, I'll promise not to peek inside if I have an intervening pick. Scout's honor.
I will attempt to update picks at the Fanball site daily, so that league managers can use that site's player tools to review the available pool. Be aware, however, that Fanball updates will typically be a partial round behind the actual draft.
When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 12 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly.
As a final caveat, I will be on vacation during the first 2 weeks of the draft. I do plan to keep up, checking in several times daily. But there will be times when I might not be as available as usual.
Culdeus has until Monday at 2pm EDT to make the first pick. Any picks made prior to Monday morning are discretionary, and not timed. There is no need to get an early start - but feel free to do so, if you are so inclined. |

Wow, the last 4 WR's drafted all have first names starting with "J". I'd call that a run.

Someone IM if cEHp picks. I'm going to try and type a short rationale for each pick before everything gets blurry again.

I think it worked this time around. It was between culdeus and leggestand. The third round picks didn't work, but I think the fourth rounders did.

I'd just like to make a point to mention that undrafted players should not be mentioned in draft rationales. I had a chance to read them and saw an instance where this occured. Just a heads up.

It actually haoppened twice, but I couldn't complain about the second time because I was the dumbA who did it the first time. My mistake...

Dang it Guru! You stole my super sleeper pick in Dante Hall. Truthfully, I almost nabbed him instead of Toomer in the 4th round, but 1) I was worried about drafting a player who primarily counted on return yards (even though those punt returns are money) and 2) I was hoping he wasn't on anyone's radar. Using last years stats he projects to be a top 8 WR in our scoring format. Even using some low projections I still rated him equal to Toomer and Smith.
Feel free to steal some of this for your draft rationale. =)
Starting to see a lot of players I have been looking at for my next pick coming off the board. Tomorrow will be a very busy day at work for me and I might have to leave a queue with MC depending on how far we move tonight.

Goatlocker, just read your rationale on Dunn and thought you might enjoying reading what was said on ESPN: Whispers around the NFL It is the seventh bullet down. I think it was a good pick for you and he filled in for me well in a flex position last year.

Footballguys project him at 1400-1500 total yards and 5 TD's. Good enough for the 15th ranked RB. I think he was a great pick (just in case you hadn't read my rationales...lol).

5.11 Quentin Griffin, RB, Denver Broncos
Given the choice of taking a wide reciever or a running back off the top of my ranking board, I chose to take the top rated running back.
Quentin Griffin isn't the prototypical Denver running back, but given his speed and quickness, he's going to gain yards at the running back posiiton in the Denver scheme of run blocking. The age of dual backs may be upon us in the NFL. Quentin's hero is Dunn by all accounts.
I was very happy to see Quentin fall to the end of round 5 and me for my# 3 back. Running backs are always the hardest position to fill with productive players. Add into that the 8 bye weeks which are on the schedule and we have teams on byes one week or another nearly 50% of the season. That's a lot of substutions.
I wasn't confident he'd make the turnaround & come back to me in Rd #6, so I made the pick for Griffin now. It's almost as if I loose as many players in the draft on the short turnaround as I do on the long one. Go figure.

TB[195] - Last night I turned off the clock shortly before midnight, as usual. That was the agreement all along (see initial post).
Everybody - since we're making good progress, I will turn off the clock at midnight tonight and leave it off during the weekend. However, I hope we can continue to make forward progress on Saturday and Sunday. If you are going to be away for an extended period, please continue to make backup arrangements.

OK. Either I just put myself in the top third for defense with that pick (Mark Fields) or I just wasted a pick.
Had him on my radar for two picks now and just didn't want to lose the chance to pick him up. Obviously I'm banking on a return to his amazing 2002 season. If he does, it was well worth a pick at this point.

What's up with that? Are we writing about our picks or who we didn't draft?

I can't quite decipher that last post. If you were refering to my last rationale, Dante Hall, Chad Pennington, and the NE Defense have all been drafted. I suppose I could have just said I like Jimmy cuz he eats his Wheaties and catches lots of balls, but that doesn't quite help the reader know exactly what was going through my mind when I made the selection.
