0 Subject: Significant Changes for Kafenatid.net

It is with great sadness and great joy that I announce there will be significant changes at Kafenatid.net. These changes have been prompted by a number of reasons, some of which I will explain and some of which I won't. First things first, the changes...

WHAT'S ON ITS WAY OUT

  • TSN Hockey Sortables - This is probably the most significant portion of Kafenatid.net that will be leaving. I have carried philliephan's torch for 2 years now and it has been an absolute honor. I now want to pass that torch to someone else. If anyone is willing to take on the TSN Hockey Sortables, I will be more than happy to turn over all of my code, web pages, and databases that relate to the sortables. I will also be willing to assist in the setup of everything, though this will not extend to daily maintenance. For anyone interested, the sortables, as they are now, require PHP and mySQL. I obviously have that available to me and, if you have a domain, I would be willing to host it at cost. I will not be hosting the sortables at kafenatid.net, so that is not an option.
  • Kafenatid Games - While it's not the most popular part of Kafenatid, it was the hardest decision to make. Realistically, it's just not a good investment for me. I spend most of my time dealing with the games, in some form or fashion, and the ROI just isn't there as you'll read more about below. Sign ups for games have been steadily decreasing and the games are really only sustained by a handful of people. To those people, I offer my apologies. I've had a blast competing against all of you over the years.
  • Offense/Defense Schedules - This is directly tied to the dropping of Games. Because I will not be doing daily game updates, the data will not be available for the Offense/Defense Schedules to work properly. Realistically, they were not used much, so I don't expect them to be missed much.
  • Power Rankings - Re-read the above and replace "Offense/Defense Schedules" with "Power Rankings".
  • Standings - Re-read the above and replace "Offense/Defense Schedules" with "Standings".
  • Ballpark Rankings (Baseball) - Re-read the above and replace "Offense/Defense Schedules" with "Ballpark Rankings".
WHAT'S STAYING WHERE ITS AT
  • TSNP Calculator - The most used portion of the site will be staying. This requires little maintenance, except at the start of the year when I need to see what's changed from my stats sources. After that, it's cruise control, so it will stay.
  • Schedule - Same thing as TSNP Calculator, though not quite as popular. It's just a matter of putting in the schedule at the beginning of the year and hitting cruise control (except for postponed games), so it will stay.
  • On the Clock Draft Manager - Very little maintenance and growing in popularity, so it will stay. And, to be quite honest, it has been paying for the site, so I'm not looking to do away with revenue generators anytime soon. ;)
  • All NASCAR sections - I can deal with a once a week update, plus all of the pages in the NASCAR section are updated with a single file upload. Realistically, without the games, it will take me about 5 minutes a week to update, so I'm fine with that.
WHY THINGS ARE CHANGING
There are many reasons why things are changing. As I said initially, some of those reasons I will get into and others I will not. If you would like more information than what you've read here, you can email me and I'll respond as best I can.
  • Too many updates and not enough time - As my site has grown to where it's at now, I have found myself faced with the challenge of having more and more updates to make, particularly on a daily basis, and less and less time to make those updates. All of this also leaves me with less and less personal time. I've had some significant life changes in the past few months that I will not get into on this board that have left me with re-examining what I want out of life. One of those things is more time and freedom to do what I want. Unfortunately, in its current state, I do not have that. There have been a number of people in the past that I have leaned on for help (Teddybears and philflyboy in particular. THANKS! to the both of you.) and I know that if I gain the time and freedom I want, I will be leaning on too many people too much. And, no matter how much I leaned on people, I would still be the one responsible for fixing anything that was wrong or not working and that's not a responsibility I want anymore.
  • Decline in interest - While I'm still a sports nut and a stats nut, I'm not near the fantasy sports nut I used to be. I would compare it to the difference between a blowtorch and a votive candle. I'm more the votive candle right now. As such, I find myself spending a lot of time working on a site that doesn't draw my interest like it used to. As I'm sure you can guess, this too has to do with recent changes in my life. Call it a new perspective or call it whatever you want, but I just don't have the fire burning inside to want to spend as much time with fantasy sports as I used to. Not even close.
  • Trimming the excess - When I look at it realistically, the Games and Sortables portions of my site are the most time consuming parts. Yet, they don't receive near the visits (unique visits, not just hits) of the TSNP Calculators. So I can spend a lot of time on things that aren't used much, or spend very little time on things that are used a lot. I'm choosing the latter. If you're in business and you have one employee that takes 5 minutes to make Product A that brings in 80% of your revenue and another employee that takes 10 hours to make Product B that brings in 5% of your revenue, it doesn't take an MBA to realize you trim Product B and that employee. My Product B is Games and Sortables.
I said at the beginning of this post that I make this announcement with great sadness and great joy. It has been quite a journey to get Kafenatid.net where it is today and it was not an easy decision to make to take down portions of it that I have spent countless hours developing. But I am happy knowing that I will get a part of my life back that I want. It's one of those decisions that's tough to make, but you know you're doing it for all the right reasons.

While Kafenatid.net and I are not going away completely, I do want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped Kafenatid.net be what it is through suggestions, critiques, bug report submissions, and many other offerings. So THANKS! :)

As an FYI, the Baseball, Football, and NASCAR games will continue until they are over. The remaining changes will take effect as soon as I get the time to implement them.

KKB, While it's sad to see Kafenatid downsized, it's happiness you will recapture some "time" in your life. Thanks for your extreme effort!

KKB

Formost..thanks for providing countless hours of fantasy support and games. Most of all, thanks for honoring Paul Scheirer by continuing the hockey sortabiles. I suspected something was up by the answer given Isles72 question concerning last years sortables.

At my ripe old age (the double nickle is in the rear view mirrow) I've determined, at least for me, a lot of what I want out of life is defined by what I don't want in my life. My best thoughts to you through out your journey.

I'm REALLY going to miss the football Offense and Defense schedules. Whether it is a salary cap or draft league, I base almost all of my trades on them.

I hope someone else picks up your slack.

Thanks for all the help over the years.

Thanks KKB.

I appreciate all that you've done for the fantasy sports fanatic. As someone who has seen their interest diminish due to time constraints, I wholeheartedly understand your reasoning. Best of Luck.

KKB, thanks for all your hard work and i understand your feelings. I feel the same way about fantasy sports and sports in general. After watching 1000's of sporting events they all begin to look the same.

Fred,

Sorry to see them go, but you have to do what is best for you. Good luck and I am sure I will still see you posting here somewhere.
