Subject: Week Two Defenses; Comments and Analysis

Thought a thread was necessary to discuss defenses for the upcoming week. Let's here your thoughts on the various matchups.
As I see it the following are the best matchups;
a. Green Bay at Buffalo-Buffalo's already stout defense at home against an unhealthy Favre.
b. KC at Tenn-Tenn's home opener against what kind of an offense?
c. Miami at Minn.-Minn at home with a young qb and an offense against an aggressive defense. Can/Will Madison cover Moss one on one? Interesting matchup.
d. Giants at Philly-Philly home opener after unraveling Dallas. In fact, are any of these defenses an option?
e. Chicago at Tampa Bay. Can you expect anything out of McNown there?
f. Jacksonville at Balt. Sure, -Balt. is home. Will its offense be enough to unleash the defense?
g. Wash at Det. I am not sure what Batch's status is but Case won't get it done. Wash shutout?
I have no clue about football, so please do not take the comments as anything more than food for thought. Let's here your thoughts. |

I think you have to try and look at which team will turn the ball over the most. So I will be looking at which teams have shakey QB positions.
WAS @ DET - If Case starts then WAS will be A good choice.
STL @ SEA - Do you think Kitna will get that much better in a week?

Ah, St. Louis does look enticing!! :-) I agree, those are the two defenses to choose from!!

Good point Bags. I guess since St. Lou had not played I did not figure it into the equation.
But that's a good question. Will Seattle be as bad next week in the home opener? What can you expect out of St. Lou? Good questions!

I thought about NOR also. I think with STL you might be able to hold for two weeks. Week 2 SFO.
I don't know, just a thought.

Godo thought, you could stays with ST Louis for 2 weeks there. Unless, of course, there is a much better match-up in week 3. (like someone playing Pitt!)

Week 3 PIT @ CLE. Ouch! I don't think my family jewels are big enough to touch that one. ;-)

I'm tempted to stick with WAS' low priced/big play D against anybody. I'll prolly go with NO vs Leaf and then vs Kitna the week after that.

Was it that Leaf/SD was terrible on offense, Oakland's defense was pretty good or both? I don't know, just asking. But can we expect a similar SD offensive performance against NO?

St. Louis and New Orleans are the two defences to have in Week 2. St. Louis has a knack for takeaways and New Orleans must contend with that awesome San Diego O lead by the unrivaled Ryan Leaf. I'm gonna go with New Orleans.

What about Arizona vs. Dallas? With Aikman and Galloway out and Cunningham questionable, who is going to be QB? Probably sombody a lot worse than Case, Kitna, or Leaf. Just a thought...

Arizona is very banged up. I wouldn't risk it, if it works it will defintely give your WWR a boost because I doubt they will be widely held.

I think Oakland D is good (I had 'em this week), though I'm not a oakland fan. Maybe someone has the inside scoop. Gotta get out of 'em now, though, against indy. Looking at St. Louis, if I can figure out how to afford them.
BTW, I can't find St. Louis in Guru's sortables. Bug?

just my 2 cents, but the problem with the Seahawks isn't so much Kitna, as the horrid seattle offensive line. So much for Dennis Erickson being a complete idiot. I think this "I'm God" coach from GB they paid a ransom for is a complete idiot. We could be looking at a contra-Seahawks D every week.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned San Diego's D against the 'Aints. The Chargers gave up 9 points at Oakland and are home next week!! Less than 5 mil to boot

The NO O-line is pretty awesome and I really like Blake actually now that he's outta Cincy. Good TE's and Ricky to block for him. I just don't see this as a good pick personally.

I currently have the 'Skins, and I see no reason to trade out of them. In fact, I'd heavily consider trading into them if I didn't have them. They are priced low (allowing for other upgrades) and are facing an offense in shambles. Even in Charlie Batch comes back for this game, he will be playing his first full game since injury, and the offense will not be used to his play style. Also, the 'Skins faced a whole lot of questions in the media after their narrow victory this past week. They have something to prove and their defense is stacked enough to prove it.

I think the key is to concentrate more on tunrovers than on shutting someone out. I had baltimore week 1 precisly because I figured they would shut out pittsburgh, but I wonder if picking miami vs minnesota might not be a bad idea. I would suspect that pep will turn it over at least twice against them, but im still not sure miami can keep them under 20 points, which is somewhat neccessary.

I have WA, balt & TB on four different teams. my favorite matchup this week is WA vs Det. i live in michigan and am a life long Lion fan and i am here to tell you they Stink!
Thier record against Washington for the last 30 years has been terrible! true they don't play every year but i am sure they are something like 1-20 over this time. Batch or Case it won't matter we may as well trot Eric Hipple out there.

I'm thinking about Craig's SD idea. The Chargers only allowed 82.6 rushing yards per game last year and only 67 rushing yards against Oakland last week. If the Chargers can shut down Ricky Williams and force some turnovers they might be a good pick.

Eric Hipple. I can't tell ya the last time I heard his name. Now there's another die hard Lions fan. If we're gonna bring out Hipple can we bring back Billy Sims?

I just got back in town and I have been trying to catch up on everything. There sure is a lot going on. My only problem so far is Leaf. I will have to move him. Now to talk defense:
I had Miami on three out of four teams. I tried to talk them up in the preseason defense thread. I knew they would play well, but I was really impressed! I figured we would hold Seattle to 10 points or less at home. I will hold them vs the Vikes. I believe Dante was 13 for 33. Not the best numbers. I know he had three rushing TDs, but against the Dolphins, you better be able to throw. The only thing that bothers me is the astroturf. Moss vs Madison is the match-up to watch. So far Sam has backed up his talk, but Moss is a whole different story. Can Dante handle the pressure? I think the Fins get the better of him. It will be interesting to watch. Until a team gets the better of the Dolphin D, I'm sticking with them. Just my .02.

culpepper vs mia, i will not have culpepper after his price increase tomorrow. i am moving him and McNoun for Griese who goes against atlanta at home. in fact i may do it before tomorrow's repricing. i am not sure who will gain the most $ tomorrow Culpepper, McNoun or Griese?

the saints are looking like a pretty good pickup. priced at only 2.7 mil, they put up 250 against the lions. playing sd, they may get even more points. plus, if kitna continues to struggle, NO might be a good hold vs sea for week 3.

hoops boy-the other Miami corner is Pat Surtain, who, I believe, also had an interception against Seattle.
Miami is interesting because they already had a pretty good defense last year. A new defensvie coordinator is there now who has made changes in the scheme. Last year Miami played man to man coverage almost all the time, got beat deep a lot. This year they are leaving the safeties back in coverage to help in pass coverage and leaving it up to the linebackers and linemen to stop the run. Last year every young qb who faced them struggled.
Not sure if I trust either NO or SD. Just don't know what they have. After last night I'm not even thinking about St. Lou. Right now I'm inclined to keep Miami or maybe go to Wash.

I'd keep away from the Arizona defense, even if the Cowboys are banged up. As long as they have Emmit to pound the ball and the line is intact, they will move the offense in that manner. They can put some bum in there and he can throw 3 yard outs to the TE's and hand off to Emmit all day long, and the Cardinals' broken defense won't be able to stop them (see Week 1, vs. Giants' RB's). If it was another opponent, I'd go against Dallas. But not Arizona.

What about holding onto Jacksonville? Is it worthwhile? Don't know exactly what I'm going to do this week. Not sure I'll make any trades. Is this smart? Hmmm....

Word is that Batch will now start for the Lions against Wash. I'm sticking, probably in error, with the Fins.

I went ahead and bought New Orleans for 2 reasons. First, San Diego is looking weak right now and Leaf will throw some INT's. Second, it freed enough money for me to trade Culpepper to Warner. Since I am also holding Manning, I like my new QB's.

Funny Willix:). Worst thing is now I will have a personal stake in the game if I'm fortunate enough to be able to watch it on tv!
