I think it's a 1st in ND history... bowl game (Insight) still up in the air, as well as coach IF they go.

Why do teams do it before the bowl game?

I also feel bad for willingham...
He got shafted by Brady Quinn (who isnt very good) and Pete Carroll (ND got destroyed by the Trojans by 31 points in every season that Willingham was coaching)

why would he go back to Stanford?

I think they should've given Willingham another year.

Why are college AD's so dumb? First Zook and now Willingham. Why would you ever, EVER, fire a college coach before 4 years is up? Think about it...

Coach comes in with players from previous coach. Those players don't necessarily fit the new coach's plans. So, the new coach does some recruiting (didn't they say Zook was an awesome recruiter?) and gets some players to fit his system. When is it that those recruits will be ready to play? When they're juniors or seniors, likely. So, the first opportunity a coach will have to work with a majority of his recruits is in his (drumroll, please) 4th year, when his first year recruits are seniors and his second year recruits are juniors. Oh, and that's not including any red-shirting.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Florida's move was awful. That was a given.

This ND move isn't quite as bad. I am not a huge fan but its better than Florida for one reason: they will get Urban Meyer. Is Meyer better than Willingham? That remains to be seen. But at least they have a plan. And I'm 95% he ends up there.

Florida has no plan. They are clueless.

The only reason ND made the move now is that Urban has a clause that cost nothing if he goes to ND. Chances are Urban ends up in South Bend, or else ND doesn't make this move. They wanted to beat FLorida to the punch.

The real problems for ND are 1) Academics-they will not lower their standards for wins. This means that they need a coach who understands the limitations and recruits accordingly, Urban was an ass't at ND which helps his case.

2) That schedule no coach can win week in and week out playing that tough of a schedule. In reality until they break down and join a conference (which they won't do since NBC pays them good $$$) or soften their schedule (which they can't do since NBC pays them good $$$ to play the big boys), they are a 6-8 win team year and year out.

If you look at Ty's record with the exception of 3 years ago he was an average coach, 5-9 wins a season over his career.

KKB, I agree that Ty and any coach for that matter , should be given at least 4-5 years. Goodness Quinn is only a soph. Now he's going to learn a new system, recruitment will take another couple of years to come around to the new coach.

ND's canning Ty today means that all D-1 schools are now nothing more than football factories, what little luster was left on the Golden Dome has now faded into the $$$ zone.

Time for Washington to get Mr. Willingham's cell number and drop him a line.

Actually Seattle Zen, that might be part of the reason he was canned so quickly. Atleast I read that in one of the articles today.

Not to be too much of a homer (which I am) but I think recruiting was the key to the firing. Last years USA Today's offensive player of the year was Brian Brohm, product of a Louisville parochial school, with the grades to go where ever he wanted. Highly recruited by ND, but signs with U of L to back up Leflors. Admitted he does have strong ties to Louisville, but when ND can't drag a potential NFLer from the CUSA Cards, heads have to turn. As a frosh, Brohm probably saves his job (inside info says he was promised the job over Quinn). ND isn't used to being second fiddle to anyone, and I think the Brohm example is just one of too many they couldn't accept.

BTW, I also think that the first firing of a coach that didn't get his full 5 years, that happened to be African American will hurt the program further. Back in the day an ND degree was priceless later in life, now NFL dollars eclipse that X's 10. The Irish are in a deep hole, and it will take a special coach to bring them back, just please don't let it be Bobby Petrino

louky, you make Louisville sound like a bottom-of-the-barrel team. Let's not forget that their head coach was just recently recruited by currently undefeated Auburn. He's no slouch and it's understandable why players would want to play for him. Further, you make it sound like Brohm will backup LeFors for his entire college career. LeFors is a senior. That gives Brohm 1 year to get the offense down and 3 years to shine. I'm not sure 1 extra starting year at Notre Dame would have been that much better.

The reality is that the days of Notre Dame getting any grade-making player out there they want are over. The mystique isn't there anymore and it's through no fault of Willingham or any coach before him. It used to be that Notre Dame was college football and you could see them every Saturday. Now, with ABC, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, GameDay, and a host of other outlets joining the college football broadcast every Saturday, our options are no longer limited to just seeing Notre Dame and basking in their golden helmet glow.

I just wonder if Urban Meyer will have longer than 3 years with Willingham's recruits. He's done with other coaches' recruits, so we'll see. I guess the bigger question after that is how well he'll do with his own recruits.

"Hey, look at Charlie Weis. His 1950's haircut will be such a hit with the kids, it be sock-hop-a-rific! Tell your folks and your chums down at the malt shoppe that Notre Dame football is back!"

You clowns stuck there in the Heartland take note, ND might beat UW next September, but the Huskies hired a great coach and you were just too stupid to realize it. The Purple and Gold will be far superior to the Golden Dome for years and years.

Zen, what do you know about Ty Willingham that makes him a "great" coach? That his haircut is superior to Weis'?

Willingham was horrid at ND and the program was going downhill fast. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but, hell, I'm a nice guy too. The difference is I'm not getting big bucks to coach a winning football team. Anyway, he'll do fine at a mediocrity like UWash - he'll fit right in with you guys out there.

I know that he had success at Stanford, which is quite an accomplishment because they are one of the few schools left who require decent grades and ethical behavior from its players and programs. At UW, the only limit on ethics is your imagination :)

For all you East of the Mississippi who are drunk before the Huskies kick off on Saturday mornings, the Mighty Dawgs have not had a losing season since 1976 (I've blocked this year's season from memory).

Willingham will bring back our lock solid winning ways. He might have have the record of this dapper dude

Gil Dobie (1908-1916) 58-0-3

But he will be coaching in January often.

Seattle Zen,

Can you please a picture of Satchel Paige for me as well? I'm trying to see how you can make someone from OVER 100 years ago relevant to anything going on in sports today.
