Well, I'm not getting my hopes up too high, but live scoring gives me a 4 point lead with only one of my defensive players left to play. Hope it holds up.

I am beginning to see a pattern here.

Well it looks official... the 7th and 8th seeded teams are going to the finals to fight it out

In the spirit of cheering for the team that took you out: Congrats again, MC and best of luck.

Or is that biting the hand that invited you?

I'd wish you both good luck, but that just seems silly. One of you is going to lose, right? What's the point? ;)

Welfare - Smelfare.

I would rather take a good ol a**-whippin than lose like I did.

Funny thing is, I had thought about sitting TO and then thought - can't do that, it's TO.

Oh well, that's the way the ball bounces.

Best of Luck to Guru and MC.
But, following the thread, I'm rootin for Guru.

Tax,
Couldn't believe that win in Golden. And yes, you are right, I get you this week.
Fun, fun, fun.

I thought about starting Pennington for a minute this morning, but I don't know how I can NOT use Collins, who has gotten me where I am.

Remember how inconsistent he was in New York for 4 years? Even when he was good, he was never this good. I really think alot of it has to do with the weak defenses he's played lately.

I am more concerned about the McGahee situation. I'd hate to have to start Barlow again this week. McGahee has carried me as much as anyone, and I hope he is able to go this weekend. Not that any large chunk of my points have come from the RB position, anyway. In fact, I've succeeded despite the position.

I was surprised to see that you are toting around the Vikings 25th ranked fantasy defense, Guru. I'm sort of surprised that you didn't scoop up another defense to play before the Playoffs started.

The number 6 seed vs. the number 8 seed: that's certainly unexpected. It should be a good game. Well, I hope it's a good game. I'd hate to come this far and get blown out. I'm very excited to see what happens.

I had Minnesota for weeks 13 (Chicago) and 15 (Detroit). I had Dallas for weeks 14 (N.O.) and 16 (Wash). Take a look at the team defenses that are still available. Which higher ranked defense would you suggest I should have taken? Houston at Jax? Saints vs. Atlanta?

Cowboys at home vs Wash. should be as good as any of the alternatives. Dallas has been better the last few weeks than their season average would suggest. And if I had picked up a third defense, I'd be even more likely to pick the wrong one this week!

OK, I didn't look at your bench. At least you have a choice.

Higher ranked? No. Maybe better matchup. New Orleans could have a decent game if Atlanta benches their starters, as I have seen indicated in several places. Of course, that would have required some clairvoyance on your part.

Looking at the crud that's left, I suppose it's sort of an exercise in futility.

I'm sort of surprised that you didn't scoop up another defense to play before the Playoffs started.

...OK, I didn't look at your bench.

Not to belabor the point, but if you didn't look at my bench, why did you call me out for not picking up another defense? Were you just blindly assuming that I'm an idiot? (Perhaps with good reason...)

Regardless, I did look at all of the teams and upcoming matchups that were available before the week 13 freeze. I didn't see any matchups that looked like they were more attractive than what I had.

OK, now I'll belabor: I saw the rankings of all of your players were fairly high, all things considered. Then I saw the Vikings defense, ranked 25 out of 32, and noted that discrepancy. Then, a while later I was doing a stream of consciousness post (#68), and the question flowed from my fingers.

I know you aren't an idiot. I was kind of surprised to see one bad player starting amongst all of the good ones. I suppose it's similar to me starting Coles. That will be the last time for that, though.

I'll admit I overestimated what would be left on the free agent list. With 14 teams in this league, any team worth playing weekly is surely not available. I didn't think of it that way. No offense intended.

No prob. It kind of stuck in my craw when you disparaged my lack of a backup defense without even looking to see if I had one! I'm over it now.

I actually went through most of the season with Tennessee as my primary defense. They were OK for awhile, but average at best. I hated their late season matchups, so I dumped them heading into the playoffs. I did have the Bears at one point, but swapped them to legge. Although they are ranked much higher, they've been weaker in the playoffs than the defenses I kept.

The Vikes got me a 7 and an 8 the two weeks I played them. The 'Boys only got 6 (vs. N.O., when they fell apart in the 2nd half). Unfortunately, when I pencilled them in as my week 16 team (not really expecting to still be alive this week!), it was before Ramsey had done anything even remote respectable. Lately, the Skins have looked better offensively, so that matchup doesn't look as good now as it did three weeks ago. But I'm not second guessing my defenses. Can't have everything. I'm not looking to my defenses to be the difference makers. I just hope they can stay out of red numbers.

Here's hoping for a big offensive game from San Diego!

That's been the great thing about Indy's defense: the offense usually scores so much that the other team's offense is pressured to keep up and they make mistakes. San Diego is unlike any team the Colts have played in a while, though. They have a very balanced offensive attack (despite throwing 8 times and running 50 last week!), AND a very good defense. I would be worried if my starting QB was Manning this week.

Potential roster change alert:

Both of my tight ends (Heap, Pollard) are currently listed as questionable. It sounds like Heap will still play, but if you see a late roster switch, you'll know why. According to our playoff rules, TE is one of the positions that allows for such a substitution.

Technically, I can't drop Heap, because he was already listed as Q for week 13 when playoff rosters were frozen. But Pollard is eligible to be dropped. I can't bear to study at the riffraff left on the F/A list, however, so I'm going to defer on the assumption that Heap will be OK.

I did take a quick peek and noted that Troupe was available, and might have been my backup. However, Tennessee plays on Saturday, a day before Baltimore. And I don't want to bench Heap prematurely, for obvious reasons.

Yes, I was looking at the Dolphins-Browns game online and the next thing I know, there's a big orange stripe across the screen: Dennis Northcutt 58 yard TD.

I'm concerned with Bulger coming back that Holt may go off tomorrow night. That will be one heck of a way to end the season. Unless Suggs goes off the rest of the way. Either way, this game won't be a disappointing one--should be close.

Congrats on winning, Eric. Great comeback the last couple of weeks and a fine season. Congrats to you as well, Dave. I know you've said football is your weakest sport, but you couldn't prove it with the way you managed your team this year.

I don't know how many new invites will be sent out next year, but I would like to toss in the name of Mike D. He won our all-gurupie Yahoo League, Serious Biz (there is a thread in this forum). I was surprised he wasn't initially invited but it was probably because he was an original member of one of the other Invitational Leagues. He is top-notch manager and as most of you probably know, a great person to have in any league.

Agreeing with the Guru (and the obvious)...my post failed to recognize "actual" champ Motley Crue...whose team really turned it up a notch.

Looking back at the MC metamorphosis in the last 3 weeks of of the regular season, MC avg @ 149/gm ...during the 3 weeks prior to that, it was 109/gm. According to Fan Ball, he scored at a 141/gm clip thru the play offs. Attaboy MC

Nothing like a 12 game winning streak to finish off the season.

Thanks for all of the congratulations. I have to confess that it has always been a goal of mine to make RotoGuru's Hall of Fame, and I will be proud to go in as RIFC champ.

Congratulations to Perm Dude for his Toilet Bowl triumph.

The competition in this league was probably the best I've ever faced. The PoliBoard league last year was tougher in some ways, but the inaugural RIFC was a greater challenge overall because I truly believe every manager gave their undivided attention to it to the greatest extent possible. I know I never gave up. At 1-7 I decided that I needed to fight back and finish somewhere in the middle of the pack, at least. I wound up 6th in the standings, and that was more than I expected.

I want to acknowledge my playoff opponents, and give them some props. Ender went 17-9 and averaged 117.6 points per game. That ain't easy!
I still think that Sludge had one of the best drafts of anyone, and I was bummed when I had to play him in Week 15. I really thought his team might make it all the way. And of course the Guru himself had a powerhouse team. I actually panicked before the games started last week when I looked at his lineup and saw I was going against Culpepper, Dom Davis, Holt, Wayne, and the return man extraordinaire, Dante Hall.

I was looking at the player rankings yesterday, by position. I have my share of #1's (Gates and McGee), but I didn't win because I had an inordinate number of studs. I was lucky to get some high-level performances out of some castoffs and free agents, and virtually every position scored reasonably well for me most weeks.

Thanks to everyone for giving this league so much attention. The challenge is what we all play for, and that made this league quite fun.

Special thanks to Dave Hall for putting on the competition, and inviting me to play. Rotoguru.com has always been like an online home to me, and your new ideas for getting folks involved with the site really create a comraderie around here that is unparalleled. Keep up the great work, Guru.

Congrats MC and Guru! I am still in shock that seeds 1-4 were all knocked out in Round 1, as I don't know if I have ever seen that happen before.

My team choked in the playoffs and if for some reason I made the championship game, I would of put up more than 150 points. MC's team has been a model of consisitency during the postseason, and I congratulate him on his remarkable run during the second half of the season.

I just wanted to poke my head in and say Congradulations to Montley Crue!

Interestingly enough, we both had horrible drafts (Our fist 6 rounds worth of picks are very similar), due to both of us picking from the same spot, 12th in the draft.

And yet we both managed to manage our teams to a league championship. I look forward to seeing some of you next year in the RIFC.

Has anything been said as far as to who was going to be invited for next year? I think I stood a chance of being pulled up from the qualifiers with the 2nd best record in my league but the most points scored. First place was also a guy who had teams in two leagues so his team in mine didn't count.

For RQFL #2...

Playoffs
Doug - Winner
Bags - Runner-up
Bandos & Trip - Won first round games

Regular Season
19-7 - Bandos (2979 points, 4th highest)
18-8 - Bonka (3137 points, highest)
17-9 - Wildcats, Beezer, and Doug (2856 points, 6th highest)
16-10 - dgrooves & Trip (3009 points, 3rd highest)
11-15 - Greybear & Bags (2771 points, 8th highest)

Let me know if there's other relevant info you'd like... this shows most of the pertinent info for the 4 teams that won a playoff game plus the 1 team with the highest regular season point total (who it turns out did not win a playoff game).

to make it short:
winner: I_AM_CANADIAN
runner-up: THK

regular season:
1. bandos (10-3, 1506.74)
2. youngroman (8-5, 1653.2 = most total points of all RIFC-leagues, and then an unspectacular loss to IAC in the first playoff round, it still hurts!)
3. WiddleAvi (8-5, 1519.88)
4. Toral (8-5, 1505.76)
5. PanchoVilla (6-5, 1416.58)

Looking back at all the leagues, I am surprised to see how lower seeds advanced to each Super Bowl:

RIFC: 6 vs 8 Super Bowl (6 winning)
*Top 4 seeds out in first round

RQFL 1: 7 vs 8 Super Bowl (7 winning)
*1 and 2 seed out first round

RQFL 2: 6 vs 8 Super Bowl (6 winning)
*2, 3, and 4 seed out first round

I think an item to be brought up for next season may be the possible implementation of "home field advantage." Unlike "real" football, in fantasy football there is no advantage to being a 3 seed instead of a 6 seed.

I don't know if I would even be for adding home field advantage points (something along the lines of 8 points for the 1 seed, 6 for the 2 seed, 4, for the 3 seed, and 2 for the 4 seed), or if it would even effect the outcome of games. But, I think it's something that can be discussed as next season gets closer.

That's an interesting thought, legge. But I think there is an inherent advantage to finishing high in the rankings, and that is that you get to play the lower ranked playoff teams early on (#1 vs #8, #2 vs #7, etc). That turned out to be an insignificant advantage this time (some might say a disadvantage). But it should even out over time.

I think the best way to ensure a significant advantage for the top finishers is to give them a first round bye. Then you have to either expand the playoffs by 2 teams (and a week--playing into Week 17: Yikes!) or else reduce the playoff field by 2, leaving out possibly deserving 7th and 8th seeds.

No matter what you do, it will never reflect the rest of the season. Unfortunately fantasy football playoffs are more about getting lucky or unlucky with your players. You can outpoint everyone every week during the regular season and just have that one bad or mediocre week which happens to be your first playoff game. What can you do?

Though whatever we do, it's still better than the BCS :)

what about the idea that you start your playoff-matchups with the average score of your regular season?
this way a good team in the regular season (a team with lots of points, not lots of wins) could gain an advantage of up to 20 points for the playoffs.

In a league with 14 teams where every team has the opportunity to play every other team in the league twice, it makes no sense to invite over half of the teams into the playoffs. A six team playoff system where the 2 top performing teams receive byes seems appropriate to me.
