My favorite day of the year is still 4 months away but its never too early to start predicting who will go where.
Assuming no trades, here's one man's guess before Kiper comes out with his:

Green Bay is going to take defensive players I think. Probably a defensive end, a safety, a linebacker, a defensive tackle. Something like that.
They will keep Favre as long as they have to. Two, three, four years. I don't think they are in a rush to get a quarterback to be honest with you.
Favre is in no hurry to retire either no matter what you might have read. And he's still one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

BTW, did any of you check out Craig Nall's (Favre's backup) stats against the Bears.
Not bad. And Nall has got a big arm. I've seen this guy throw some unbelievable passes when he's gotten a chance to play. Packers also got JT O' Sullivan from the Saints.

Mock Draft Part II. Matt Leinart and Ahmad Brooks' decisions to stay in school have changed the shape of this draft.
To me, this is a deep draft class that lacks real franchise players (in other words, no clear #1 pick) but should produce many solid players.
Players that would (in a normal year) be drafted 5th thru 10th will be picked 1st thru 4th this year.
Here's an updated mock draft:
1 San Francisco-- Aaron Rodgers QB -- With no Leinart and a desperate need for a change, Rodgers lucks out (at least financially), stays close to home, and becomes the face of the new 49ers.
2 Miami-- Cedric Benson RB -- Ricky Williams minus the insanity. Should make the Dolphins happy.
3 Cleveland-- Alex Smith QB -- Has the brains (graduated college in 2 years) but must get stronger to be a star.
4 Chicago-- Braylon Edwards WR -- Bears fans hope he does more than fellow UM alum David Terrell.
5 Tampa Bay-- Dan Cody DE -- Great senior year propels him to the top of round one.
6 Tennessee-- Pac Man Jones DB -- Titans gave up more than 250 yds/gm through the air.
7 Oakland-- Ronnie Brown RB -- RB of the future in Oakland. Should play and excel right away.
8 Arizona-- Carnell Williams RB -- Emmitt Smith can't go on forever.
9 Washington-- Heath Miller TE -- Skins passed on Winslow last year. Gibbs won't let Miller slide by this year.
10 Detroit-- Shawne Merriman LB -- Should help Lions get some pressure ont the QB.
11 Dallas-- Troy Williamson WR -- Cowboys need speed at the skill positions deperately. Parcells stuns us again (Jones over Jackson last year) with Williamson over Williams this year.
12 San Diego (from Giants)-- Mike Williams WR -- Hometown hero might fall into their lap.
13 Houston-- Derrick Johnson LB -- SEE PICK 12.
14 Carolina-- Ciatrick Fason RB -- Might be a little stretch but need insurance with the oft-injured Foster and Davis.
15 Kansas City-- Antrel Rolle DB -- Impact player with speed on defensive side of the ball. Take the hint KC.
16 New Orleans-- Erasmus James DE -- Another draft, another DE picked by NO in ROund 1.
17 Cincinnati-- T. Johnson DT -- Young improving D continues to get younger and well, improve.
18 Dallas (from Buffalo)-- Channing Crowder LB -- Speed on D a must. Durability a concern with Crowder, however, but he's worth the risk.
19 Jacksonville-- Alex Barron OT -- Can never have enough protection for the franchise QB Leftwich.
20 Baltimore-- Roddy White WR -- Until Ravens get a WR corps with some talent, the evaluation (constant criticism) of Boller as a QB must be put on hold.
21 Seattle-- Shaun Cody DL -- Seattle will look to answer their questions on D through the draft.
22 Green Bay-- Carlos Rogers CB -- Forget the future, GB needs warm bodies in their secondary now.
23 Denver-- Thomas Davis S -- Hard-hitting playmaker on D, exactly what Denver needs.
24 San Diego-- Justin Miller CB -- After the coup at pick 12, SD would be wise to take a chance on this improving corner with great speed.
25 Minnesota-- Matt Roth DL -- Williams, Udeze, and Roth not a bad front 3.
26 St. Louis-- Rodrique Wright DT -- Please make an effort trying to stop the run.
27 New York Jets-- David Pollack DE -- If the Jets can get Pollack in ROund 1 and Mike Nugent in Round 2, I will be elated.
28 Indianapolis-- Daryl Blackstock LB -- Offense is not the problem. Except in the cold weather.
29 Atlanta*-- Jamaal Brown OT -- Must protect Vick. Must protect Vick. Must protect Vick.
30 Philadelphia*-- Eric Shelton RB -- Lack of depth at RB a concern.
31 New England*-- Chris Henry WR -- Maybe Patriots coaching staff can control him.
32 Pittsburgh*-- Brandon Browner DB -- Not much to improve on in the Steel city.

I don't know about the 49ers taking a quarterback. Anybody who plays fantasy football knows that Tim Rattay put up some huge numbers this year when he was healthy.
Seems like they could try to get better at other positions while Rattay plays quarterback. Or maybe draft a project QB in the later rounds.
I think Rattay is a decent quarterback when healthy.

Rattay had a 92 quarterback rating for the first 5 games he played this year. That's pretty damn good.
He tailed off after that but most likely that was because of his forearm. He had surgery on the forearm which is supposed to increase his arm strength.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the Niners traded down. I could see Dallas trading up. This year, there is no clear cut #1, but the Cowboys have the picks to make a move up to take a QB.

I agree...I could see the 49'ers trading down and getting a RB...either trading down to get Carnell, or even staying at the 1 spot and going for Bensen.
But seeing how cheap they have been lately, I see them trading down and getting Carnell

Dallas didn't take Jones over Jackson. Dallas traded down and added a 1st round pick this year. No way Williamson goes before Williams. You don't even have Williams in the first round?!?!
I could see Dallas taking Antre Rolle with their first pick; however, they really need a QB.

A few things:
The first two mock drafts are assuming no trades. The mock trades will be in the next mock draft.
bluehen-- Ive never been to the draft. I'm in school and I play baseball. I have had games on Saturday and/or Sunday of the draft for the past 12 years straight! When I graduate, I will certainly be in attendance both days.
MadDog-- Rattay has been decent. The position can definitely use an upgrade as QB's are judged by wins and losses. He puts up big numbers on occassion because SF is always playing from behind. They have no choice but to pass the ball. His TD-INT ratio was 10:10 in 9 games this year, not that impressive.
THK-- Just by looking at areas of need, at least 4 WR's will be taken in the 1st round without question. Edwards, Williams, Williamson and White and one more could sneak into the latter stages to make 5.

1. San Francisco 2-14 Aaron Rodgers QB-- SF needs a new identity. QB is the best place to start.
2. Miami 4-12 Cedric Benson RB-- Ricky Williams with a brain. At least the Dolphins hope so.
3. Cleveland 4-12 Adam Jones CB-- Tos ay that Cleveland needs help defensively is quite an understatement.
4. Chicago 5-11 Braylon Edwards WR-- Muhammed and Edwards would be a nice 1-2 punch for Grossman.
5. Tampa Bay 5-11 Mike Williams WR-- Sure it makes perfect sense for the Vikings to draft Williams after dealing Moss. But does the NFL draft ever go as planned?
6. Tennessee 5-11 Ronnie Brown RB-- Chris and Ronnie Brown would be quite a combo in the backfield.
7. Minnesota 8-8 Shawne Merriman DE-- They can find a WR later in the 1st round.
8. Arizona 6-10 Cadillac Williams RB-- Dennis Green loves fast RB's.
9. Washington 6-10 Alex Smith QB-- Snyder gets restless easily.
10. Detroit 6-10 Heath Miller TE-- I like the trio of Miller, Rogers, and Williams a lot. Imagine what Harrington would think.
11. Dallas 6-10 Derrick Johnson LB-- Parcells would love this playmaker.
12. San Diego (from Giants) 6-10 Dan Cody DE-- Chargers would be lucky to get this good of a player this late.
13. Houston 7-9 Antrel Rolle CB-- Rolle and Robinson = shutdown corners for the Texans for many many years.
14. Carolina 7-9 Alex Barron OT-- Delhomme needs protection in Carolina plans on reaching another SB.
15. Kansas City 7-9 Erasmus James DE-- If not for injury earlier in year, James might be top 3 pick this year.
16. New Orleans 8-8 Marcus Spears DT-- NO always drafts D-lineman in round 1.
17. Cincinnati 8-8 Travis Johnson DT-- Nice run stuffer should mesh well with Smith.
18. Minnesota 8-8 Troy Williamson WR-- Better value here than he would be at #7 slot.
19. St. Louis 8-8 Carlos Rogers CB-- Rams need help in a lot of places but will start at DB.
20. Dallas (from Buffalo) 9-7 Matt Roth DE-- Johnson and Roth in the first round would make Parcells think about coaching a few more years.
21. Jacksonville 9-7 Jamaal Brown OT-- Leftwich needs to stay healthy.
22. Baltimore 9-7 Roddy White WR-- Hopefully for Boller, Ozzie startes to address the glaring weakness at WR.
23. Seattle 9-7 Thomas Davis LB-- Seattle had succes turning Boulware from LB into a safety. Now they try to turn a safety into a LB.

25. Denver 10-6 Channing Crowder LB-- If I were a Broncos fan, I would like the thought of DJ WIlliams and Crowder playing together.
26. N.Y. Jets 10-6 David Pollack DE-- All of my mock drafts from here on in will have Pollack falling to the Jets somehow. I love this guy.
27. Atlanta 11-5 Mark Claytin WR-- Vick needs some weapons and Clayton fits the bill.
28. San Diego 12-4 Shaun Cody DT-- 2 Cody's to SD in 1 round? Why not?
29. Indianapolis 12-4 Brodney Pool SS-- Doss and Pool are undersized but effective.
30. Pittsburgh 15-1 Brandon Browner DB-- Secondary was torched by Brady. Changes are imminent.

From what I heard his arm isn't that great. You need a very strong arm to play in Green Bay due to the weather.

I am starting to think SF won't take a QB. No need to reach for what isn't there. They need help all over.
I am converted now...Mike Williams at #5 is high with his slow 40 time this week.
I would hate to see Ronnie go to Tennessee. After seeing some combine stats and reports...I think Ronnie could be the best pro in this draft class. Definitely #1 RB in my mind for keeper league purposes.
Rolle would be a great pick for Houston...I hope Dallas takes him first.
LOL at Pollack!
Clayton at #27 would be a steal. I think after the SR. Bowl his stock rose a little bit...I would put him #4 in the class.

Rumor on ESPN.com (Scouts Inc) has SF dealing #1 pick to SD for their 1st rounder (#12) and Philip Rivers.
SD essentially gets their 1st overall 'back' after trading down last year with the Giants and rids themselves of Rivers, allowing them to keep Brees.
SF gets their QB (who many think is a higher quality prospect than Smith/Rodgers), doesn't have to pay a #1 overall pick signing bonus, and still gets a pretty high pick.
Might be a win-win....although SF would make out very well just missing the boat on the signing bonus.

I'm not sold on Brees even though he had a good year. I can't forget the two years he had before last year which were atrocious.
Doesn't say alot for Rivers either that San Diego is willing to give him up supposedly.
I doubt they would give Rivers up if he had the potential to be a real stud quarterback.

There's no way SD makes that deal (though SF would in a heartbeat). When you draft a QB in the first round you keep him. Rivers is far better than anything in this year's QB crop and Brees, operating on a one year contract, is too likely to revert to the form he displayed for his first three seasons.

Grading the Draft:
Arizona Cardinals A+ Dennis Green aced this test. He made the Cardinals competitive through this draft.
Cincinnati Bengals A Top 3 picks will contribute and the Bengals will compete THIS year.
Oakland Raiders A Because the Raiders used draft picks to acquire Randy Moss, we will count Moss in this evaluation. Also, Hawthorne is a great value in Rd. 6.

Miami Dolphins A- Great draft for Saban. Crowder was a steal in Rd 3.
New York Jets A- I love the Nugent pick. He's a game changer and Im glad the front office had the guts to take him with their first pick. I also like Justin Miller.
Minnesota Vikings A- Terrific draft for the Vikings who really improved themselves on both sides of the ball.
Baltimore Ravens B+ Clayton is a great fit and Cody was a 2nd round steal.
Detroit Lions B+ Joey Harrington must be thrilled. AGAIN.
Philadelphia Eagles B Solid if not super draft.
Chicago Bears B The Bears' success now lies in the hands of the emotional Cedric Benson. I don’t think that's a bad thing.
San Francisco 49ers B Safe not outstanding draft. I like Ronnie Fields in the 5th Rd.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers B Gotta love the Cadillac pick and Larry Brackins may be a steal.
Pittsburgh Steelers B Miller was a steal at #30.
Houston Texans B Quietly put together a solid draft.
Atlanta Falcons B Roddy White could be a superstar in this league (I still haven’t given up on Michael Jenkins yet either.)
Dallas Cowboys B I’m not sold on Ware or Spears, yet. Should they live up to their expectations, this draft has the potential to be spectacular.
Carolina Panthers B- Thomas Davis is a game changer and Eric Shelton might be the next Stephen Davis, but the rest of the draft looks suspect.
San Diego Chargers B- Very good day 1. Sub-par Day 2.
Jacksonville Jaguars B- I’m a lot higher on this draft than many experts because I think Jones is the real-deal.
Tennessee Titans B- Great start with Pacman but really tailed off.
St. Louis Rams C+ I really like Incognito in Rd. 3.
New Orleans Saints C+ Blah draft besides McPherson who could be a steal.
Indianapolis Colts C Tried to address their defensive problems but Im not sure they drafted any real impact players outside of Rd 1.
Buffalo Bills C- Parrish is a nice find but dont they have more pressing needs than WR?
Washington Redskins D Show some confidence in one of your QB's and maybe he will play well, Mr Gibbs.
Denver Broncos D I dont mind the Clarrett selection. However, 3 CB's with the first 3 picks? Come on.
New England Patriots D Maybe Bellicheck knows something we dont, but this seems like a terrible draft.
Green Bay Packers D This grade would be an F- in not for Rodgers.
Kansas City Chiefs D- Unlike the Jets who made the playoffs, the Chiefs could not afford to take a punter on Day 1. Vermeil must not understand that you need to play defense to win in the playoffs.
New York Giants D- Giants have to hope Eli was worth it.
Seattle Seahawks F Worst draft by far in my opinion.

mbj - where is the 49er rumor? A team that bereft of talent would seem unlikely to pay the price to trade up to #1. Also, keep in mind the 49ers won a coin flip with the Raiders and SF owns pick #6. IMO they had to be ecstatic because I think there is a definite group of 6 that stand out, and besides the 2 QB's (who should definitely by gone by #6) they would love to have any from Bush, Ferguson, Williams (who I'm sure they want badly) and Hawk.
A more likely trade scenario might be if the Jets like Cutler so much that SF trades up to get ahead of GB so they can take Williams. At worst the 49ers get Hawk to be the Urlacher-like playmaker they desperately need.

I have been following the gossip a bit and am hearing that the Texans might trade down, but don't want to go any lower than where the Jets are. A swap of picks with the Jets tossing in John Abraham. Jets take Leinhart. The Niners won the coin toss and have the 6th pick, leaving the Raiders with the 7th pick. Hawk would be a good fit for either team. I am hoping the Raiders go defense with their pick even if Hawk is already taken.

There was an early rumor to that the Niners coveted Bush, but that's mostly me trying to find a place for the Texans to trade. I think they could trade with the Jets and then trade down again into the middle of the 1st round and be better off still - but that'stoo complicated for me.
Yeah, I forgot about the Raiders/Niners flip-flop, but that won't change their pix - the Raiders will take Hawk unless GB does.
I think the Jets will find a way to get one of the three QBs and I think that Tennesee should take Culter over Young (I haven't heard anything like that though.
I mainly play around with these things to see if the Bengals will get the guy i target for them. Last year I wanted them to take Miller, he was available, and they should have taken him. In reviewing my March projection from last year, I was amused to fins that i had all of the Bengals Top 3 pix going in the 1st round. Marvin must pay attention to me, huh?

Something to keep in mind is actually signing these rookies. If a new CBA is not done then the rookie contracts can only be spread over 4 years, I think, and there were alot of hold outs last year due to contracts only being able to be spread over 5 years, so you have to figure that it will be worse this year.
It is going to be tough to give the first round picks more money than last year, which the agent's are going to demand. Makes that #1 pick not quite as tempting, unless you know that that the player is signable.

I am hoping to see lots of offensive players taken before the Raiders pick 7th. I think for sure Bush, Leinhart, and Ferguson are taken. I am not buying into the Cutler hype. He will go in the first round, but I am thinking he falls back a bit. Young's stock is at it's lowest right now, but with a good pro day, he will back up into the top 5. Regardless, I hope both Young and Cutler do go in the top 5. That would mean Mario Williams or Hawk falls to the Raiders. Probably not going to happen. If both are gone, I think the Raiders might grab Michael Huff. AD loves speed and safety is a position that has to be addressed.

With the depth at LB, there is no way SF chooses Hawk over Williams. While true I believe SF will take Hawk if Williams is gone, I believe they covet Williams badly and would love to trade up above GB to get him....but doubt they will and would happily "settle" for Hawk.

I wouldn't be surprised to see several early trades as teams try to move up to get who they are after. Why wouldn't the Jets draft one of the top QB's? Pennington can't seem to stay healthy and in 1-2 years, they could have his replacement ready to take over. I honestly don't think Cutler is a top 15 pick. I do think Leinhart and Young will both be gone in the top 4 picks. Hmm, maybe the Raiders and Jets can swap picks if Bush, Young, and Leinhart are taken in the top three. We can draft Williams or Hawk. I doubt that happens, though. Al rarely drafts a LB in the first couple of rounds. The only two I can think of are Nap Harris and Fredrickson.
If the Raiders stay put and Williams and Hawk are both gone, I think they will grab a lineman, Huff, or Davis. We've signed some secondary help already in Starks and Poole. Last year we drafted two CB's with our first two picks, so maybe Huff isn't on the radar.

I'd take Leinhart and Cutler both over Young.

Everything I've heard is that the Titans will take Young.
I think there is only an outside chance that the Rams will take Cutler. They have a huge need in the secondary to address. I liked your pick for them in #33 where they got Huff :)
He likely won't be there at 11 though, but I still look for the Rams to take a Defensive player.

Is still have trouble believing that Titan ownership won't listen to one the best 3 coaches in the league and take Leinhart, but......
There will be some trades.
I could see Green Bay trading down with someone who wants Javon Walker and Vince Young and is willing to give up a lot.
There's some noise that Houston may be looking at Mario Williams. Doubt it, but that would make things very interesting. NO, would prolly trade down of that happened; it would make Bush a lot more affordable at #2. Houston's prolly just blowing smoke though, trying to ge Bush to come down on his $ though.

Bush wants $26 Million guaranteed up front for signing.
If he never ever plays a game, he gets the $26 million.
Don't expect a lot of teams to run to the table to do that deal.

I have to believe he understands now that he'll not get that money; he's not even the #1 pick. He'll have to use Cedrick Benson's contract as a comparable now. He was wanting #1 pick/QB money before.
Bet the Saints phones will be ringing all night with interested suitors for that pick. Jets maybe? Green Bay? Very interesting. The Saints can really pick up some talent if they play this right. How 'bout Javon Walker + the #4 pick for #2? I like it.
