0 Subject: RIFC 2005: Qualifying Leagues

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Sun, Jul 24, 2005, 13:42

This thread is for the organization of the 2005 Qualifing Leagues for the (2006) RIFC. For more details on the RIFC, see this thread. The purpose of Qualifying Leagues is to allow managers to earn their way to the next level. Each Qualifying League will be structured with the same configuration and rules as the RIFC.

Similar to the setup for the other sports, I’d like to have two AAA Qualifying leagues for Football. These leagues would each have 14 teams, and the invitees would come from the 6 non-playoff teams from last year’s RIFC, plus 18 non-advancing playoff teams from last year’s three qualifying leagues, plus the four other qualifying teams with the best records. If some qualifying teams are not interested in the AAA league, we just keep working down the list of last year’s qualifying league managers.

I would like to have two volunteers to commish each of the two AAA QLs. In the past, I have not had any direct personal oversight of the QLs, and I hope to keep it that way.

Once the 2 AAA leagues are constituted, we can open as many AA leagues as are needed to fill demand. Anyone is eligible for a AA league, other than someone who is already in the RIFC or one of the AAA QLs.

For 2006, I would expect to restrict the number of returning RIFC teams to at most 6 (with selection criteria to be determined). That would leave 8 slots to be filled from the QLs. We’ll have to see how many AA leagues are formed before settling on the advancement rules. In other sports, we have advanced the AA league winners to the “major” league, but for football we would have to restrict each AA league to one winner – either the regular season winner, or playoff winner. All other RIFC slots would be filled from the top AAA teams.

The non–playoff teams from the 2004 RIFC were managed by Perm Dude, TB, deepsnapper, culdeus, cEHp, and Mike V.

The playoff results of the 3 qualifying leagues are in posts 99, 100, and 106 of this thread. I assume that the non-playoff managers from those three leagues can be tracked down as well.

The first order of business is to get 2 AAA Commissioner volunteers, and to get commitments (or declinations) from the non-playoff RIFC managers and the QL playoff managers. After that, we can figure out how many non-playoff QL managers are needed, fill the open slots, and then begin working on AA leagues.

Volunteers?

I will volunteer to host a league. I would prefer to use fanball, assuming that is the format that is chosen for the main league. However, there is a $60 charge for their hosting services. This comes down to $4.29 per person.

I have set up a signup thread for one of the AAA leagues.

AAA #1 Signup Thread

Do note that by signing up for this league, you are committing to helping me pay for the league. Divided equally among the 14 manager, the total comes to $4.71 if you decide to pay me via paypal, or $4.29 if you want to send me a check.

willing to do it again.
we used rotoworld's free football commissioner.
in fact - my league from last season is still there and we could probably just use that again. that way I'd only have to kick out last years members and invite the new ones, then make whatever minor rules changes there might be.

As stated above, managers dropping down from the RIFC and playoff teams from last year's QLs have priority for the 2 AAA leagues.

If all of those managers sign up, then there are only 5 AAA spots open. There will probably be a few no-shows, but I suspect most will want to be included, so there are unlikely to be many more than 5 "non-qualifying" slots available.

We need to establish a priority scheme for those non-qualified spots. My first inclination was to open it to the non-playoff teams from last year's QLs, but I'm not sure that is really the best option, nor necessary.

Instead, I'd like to propose that GuruPatrons (regardless of prior QL participation) get first dibs on the non-qualifying AAA roster slots, on a first come, first served basis. Using that criteria, the following GuruPatrons are now eligible to sign up for one of the two available AAA leagues:

[see post 23 for updated list]

If any qualifying manager knows that he/she does not want to participate in a AAA league this year, please let us know so that we can immediately open more non-qualifying slots. Also, if anyone has email addresses for any of the qualifiers who have not yet checked it, it would be helpful to send out a notice.

We can also begin recruiting the first AA league. There are no pre-qualifications for managers in AA leagues. It is my intent that the winner of a AA league would advance to next year's RIFC as well, while AA playoff teams would have priority for next year's AAA slots. All of this is subject to final reconciliation once the number of leagues is finalized. If there are too many AA leagues, then all AA winners may not get to advance to the "majors".

All we need to start a AA league is someone to volunteer to be the Commish.

OK, here is the updated priority list for non-qualifying AAA slots (GuruPatrons, first come, first served).

1. Peter N.
2. Valkyrie
3. Slowhand
4. mjd
5. Wiggs
6. Tree

Those prioritized 1-5 may immediately sign up for one of the two AAA leagues. Those prioritized 6 and above must wait until additional non-qualified slots open up.

I emailed all of the RIFC non-playoff managers from last season. 3 have already signed up this year. Culdeus says that he will join one soon, and I haven't heard anything from deepsnapper or cEHp.

I know that deepsnapper is recovering from eye surgery, so his internet time is currently limited, but I suspect he'll join one. I don't know the status of cEHp, although he is currently playing in a AAA RIBC league, so I imagine he'll be interested.

just a thought - and considering i'm not even in one of the QLs yet, perhaps i'm speaking out of turn - but i've noticed people are pretty much leaping to get into the free league, to the point where they're actually abandoning the pay league.

maybe the commish of the pay league wants to re-consider?

For qualifying purposes there's no difference in the leagues, tree, so it might be enough to get guys to move to save the bucks.

QL#1 uses Fanball (same as the RIFC) so those managers will get a taste of how the RIFC is playing. A distinct advantage, IMO, for anyone looking to move up.

Tree,

The free league has 2 remaining spots while the pay league has 4. There have only been 2 managers which have changed leagues. If the cost of the league ends up scaring any of the qualified managers away or if any of the current members have reservations about contributing to the league's cost, I will happily pay for their spot. However, I do feel that it is a reasonable cost to play in a competitive league. It is less than the cost of stat tracker in Yahoo! and also allows for the doubleheader format used in RIBC.

For 2006, I would expect to restrict the number of returning RIFC teams to at most 6 (with selection criteria to be determined).

From Guru's opening post.

I realize it's early to be sure about the configuration for 2006, but I'm trying to figure out what an RIFC manager needs to do to get invited back next year. If only the top 6 from RIFC make it back, then that means 2 playoff teams are demoted. If that is the case, Guru, how will you decide which 2 are relegated to AAA and which 2 are invited to RIFC 2006?

Obviously, it will be important to not only make the Playoffs, but at least win in round 1.
63Guru

I'll probably invite back the top four playoff seeds, regardless of their playoff result. I would also extend an invite to the playoff winner.

Additional teams would be based on playoff seeding and playoff results. Winning one playoff game would not necessarily be enough. At this point, I don't want to commit to an exact formula, because there are a lot of variables, (not the least of which is where I finish).

For example, if teams seeded 1-5 seem to be significantly better (by W/L and/or points) than the teams seeded 6-8. I might be inclined to award the 5th seed an invite, even it it loses the first round and a several other lower seeds win their first round playoff game.

For planning purposes, you should probably consider seeds 1-4 to be safe, and seeds 5-8 to be on the bubble. The team seeded 5th would have an advantage, but could be nosed out based the closeness of the standings and playoff results.
