I should have opened this thread weeks ago, but I've simply been too sidetracked with other priorities, some RotoGuru related, some not.

If you would like to post a recap or review of the season, feel free to do so. It is not required.

I do need to collect the standings of each of the qualifying leagues. Could someone from each of those leagues please copy the final standings here, or at least provide a link to another thread with the standings in it.

I was really happy with my draft and excited about my team heading into the season. Things started off with a bang... going 5-1 through week 3 and 7-3 through week 5, but week 5 turned out to be a particularly bad one for my squad.

In one fell swoop, I lost my first pick (Deuce... #4 overall) for the entire season AND my second pick (Julius Jones... who I had traded up for at #13 overall) for several weeks. Ouch.

I tried trading, but I felt the asking prices on RBs were too high... so I muddled through weeks 6 through 9 with a lousy 2-6 record. After my hot start, I was back to .500. On the bright side, I felt I was continually improving my squad via the waiver wire... and Julius was on his way back.

Now, Julius didn't exactly put up stellar numbers upon his return, but it was enough, as he seemed to be the catylyst I needed to go on quite a tear... losing only a week 10 game to the eventual champ (Guru) in the midst of a 7-1 run to close out the regular season and claim the #4 seed. Given what my team had been through losing my top two picks (i.e., top 2 RBs), I was very happy with how I finished.

My other "lowlight" of the regular season had to be my QB position. Both the Tennessee and Jacksonville offenses failed to "click" the way I expected them to this year. ("Stoopid Norm Chow..." *sulk*) However, Kurt Warner was a GREAT pickup to help with my late-season run.

My biggest regular season "highlight" would have to be Steve Smith. I heart the guy, 'cus the guy's got heart. He's kinda like a smaller, quicker Hines Ward to me. Boldin played very well for me too.

Unfortunately, guys just didn't show up for the playoffs. Well, my IDPs and WRs were good, Warner was adequate... but my lingering RB issue definitely bit me... a measly 41 yards from Jones and -4 (!!!) from Fisher. Ouch. Shoulda started Kevin Faulk. Who knew? Or the Vikings D instead of the Giants. It's fun to play what if, what if, what if... truth is, I was just really glad with how I finished the season, my hot start wasn't wasted, and I felt I overcame some real adversity losing my top 2 draft picks... so I finished this season (relatively) satisfied, despite the early exit from the playoffs.

I really want to thank all my fellow RIFC competitors, I had a lot of fun this year playing, trading (well, only once I think... but several "attempted" trades), jawing, and ultimately losing to the-champion-who-shall-not-be-named. "Lord Gurumort." Oops! I said it... dang. Oh well... ALL HAIL!!! =-p

Like Doug, I was really happy with my draft, and although I thought I slipped up on a few picks due to being out of town, I went into the season with high hopes. As the season progressed, though, I saw how bad I missed the boat with my first few picks.

1st round. Jamal Lewis was a bust, and the worst 1st round pick that was healthy for close to the whole year.
3rd round. Michael Bennett didn't get one start for me.
4th round. Trent Green didn't live up to expectations.
My 8th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 16th, 18th, and 19th round picks were all cut at some point in the season.

My success, though, can be attributed to a few reasons:

1. LaMont Jordan ended up being a steal in the 2nd round, and helped make up for Jamal. If I went with Daunte in the 2nd round, which I pondered for a while on, I wouldn't have even made the playoffs.

2. My drafted WR's. I didn't take any WR's until the 6th round, and two ended up being top 15 WR's: Burress and Chambers. I thought my WR's were going to be weak because I missed out on all the studs, but this position actually carried me.

3. Free agent pickups: Galloway and Gado. After Joey Galloway had 0 catches in Week 2, someone dropped him. I wanted him during the draft but missed out, so, I snatched him up off waivers. He ended up complimenting Burress and Chambers very well, and possibly gave me the best WR trio in the league. Gado came at the perfect time for me. I thought Jamal was going to get it going, so, I traded Droughns. Jamal didn't get it going, so, after Gado's first game, I picked him up off waivers, which made my RB's much stronger. The funny thing is, after I picked him up, I tried to trade him to Doug for Staley, because Doug had Fisher and I thought Staley would work out better for me in the long run (while Gado was just a short term fix). Doug agreed with my thoughts, so, the trade wasn't made. Thank Gado!

Other thoughts on the season:
Overall, I am very happy with my season. I scored a ton of points, but also let up a ton of points. I thought by playoff time that I was one of the favorites, was able to scrape out a win, but crapped the bed in the semis.

I had a great time with everyone and although I am sad to see some of the great managers go to AAA, I also look forward to some fresh fish next year.

Things I have learned:
1. I thought I learned this in the first season, but I guess not: Unless you can get a top 8 IDP, don't draft them until the late rounds. I dropped Jamie Sharper (9th) and Danny Clark (11th) by mid season, because there were better, anonymous guys, out there (D Williams and Tatupu).

2. Don't draft depth early. If the choice is between a solid WR, TE, or QB, take them over a 3rd RB. Taking Bennett in the 3rd round was a wasted pick. Some players that I could of taken instead of my 3rd RB in 3 rounds: Hines Ward, Gates, McNabb, Boldin, Steve Smith...arg.

Congrats to everyone for a fun, competitive season, and I can't wait for next year!

I don't remember what happened anymore. LOL

OK, I remember now. I had Edgerrin James for most of the season, and a bunch of decent RB's to rotate in and out of the second RB spot. Thomas Jones (5.05) was the money pick for me. I also nabbed Chicago's Defense (12.10) relatively late.

I had some severe injury problems (Holt and Bulger) but the glut of RB's I lassoed allowed me to replace fallen soldiers via trade (Curtis and Brees).

My IDP picks were worthless, for the most part, but since I didn't take any until round 10 the investments weren't great. I did have success with my 20th rounder, Darrent Williams, who generally scored well each week until getting hurt late in the season. I doubt many 20th rounders did better. I got my best IDP's on waivers or through free agency. That was a common theme in this league. Again.

I think I just had some really good luck this year. I started 2-6 and was very worried at that point. My scoring average was around 111, which isn't high enough to get very far. I was making some bad management decisions (Mike Anderson in Week 1) and couldn't seem to get any points out of my WR3 spot, no matter who I plugged in. Then a 15-game winning streak began. I never scored under 100 points again the rest of the season. The last 9 weeks I went 16-2. My healthy players really played well over that span. Edge, Holt, Thomas Jones, Cooley, CHI defense, Feely, Robert Mathis. Pretty much a solid team effort.

In the playoffs I had a close shave with GoatLocker, and got lucky when legge's team dropped a stinkbomb on him in the semi's. I had a great score in the Championship and Guru blew me away with an awesome score. His team was the best all year, so it's not such a surprise that he cruised in the Playoffs. No shame in losing to him. I will be back next year looking to break the tie he and I have at the moment.

In many respects, it was an odd season, and a game of inches...

1. My first round pick was Peyton, who really didn't matter. In the early weeks, he was being outscored by Eli, my bench QB. Then I traded him for Priest, who soon went down.

2. My second round pick was Westbrook, who worked out very well. The two RBs picked just ahead of that were Steven Jackson and Curtis Martin, and Westbrook just turned out to be the one that fell to me.

3. My 3rd rounder was Andre Johnson, who was essentially a bust. He did finally put up a few decent games, but was nowhere close to having the value of a 3rd rounder.

4. Took Gates in the 4th round, and I suspect I might not have gotten him then if he wasn't going to miss the first game of the season. He was huge.

5. Donald Driver, who was dealt away in Manning/Holmes trade. His value was helped by the Packers' early loss of Javon Walker, so that was a bit of luck.

6. Larry Johnson, who was easily my MVP. I remember not being completely sold on him at the time, but I still didn't have a 2nd RB. I did know that his upside was tied to Priest's health, and that seemed like a reasonable gamble, which worked out splendidly.

(My rationale for that picked started out, "I tried to find another player to pick, but failed.") So much for my stroke of genius. I also considered trading away Johnson when I was shopping for a better RB. Thank goodness that never happened.

I took IDPs in rounds 7, 8, and 11 (Bulluck, McGee, and Vilma). Those guys were golden.

Sandwiched in the middle of the IDPs were Randle El and Dante Hall. Each had some key performances, but neither was consistent, and some of their better outings were only for the benefit of the bench.

The Indy defense also worked out well for pick 12. I knew that their early schedule was more favorable than the second half, but after such a solid start, I simply stuck with them, even when matchups suggested difficult weeks. I was fortunate to have them come up big when needed, and to have their bad outings when other players stepped up.

In fact, that was certainly a major contributor to my overall success. Until a couple of monster playoff games, I tended to always get a well balanced mix of up and down games. If one guy had an off day, someone else was huge. As a result, I never really had a bad week. And I also benefitted from a schedule that seemed to pit me against teams that were having bad weeks.

So, while I do think my team was as strong as any - and certainly came up huge in 2 of the 3 playoff games (scoring 181 and 158) - I don't think it was as dominating as the record would suggest. And my second round playoff game was won 115-101. A better week for the opponent could have killed things right then and there.

In a strange twist, although he was on my team at the time, the most important break was when Priest Holmes - who was effectively my first round pick - was injured. That unleashed the beastly results from Larry Johnson.
