Subject: Tirico, Theisman, and Kornheiser

ESPN announced this morning that next year's broadcast crew in the MNF booth will be Mike Tirico, Joe Theisman, and Tony Kornheiser.
I usually listen to Kornheiser's morning radio talk show, which is on a local Washington DC station, but also broadcast over the web. I thought his reaction was interesting, and probably much more candid than you'll hear on PTI. If you're interested, here it is as an MP3 file:

I hate listening to Joe Theisman, every other comment out of his mouth is about himself. This just means I'll need to listen to it on the radio.

I like a good many of the sports broadcasters well enough, but I also am one who cannot stand Theisman. For an ex-player, he sure can say some dumb things. And he has an arrogance about him, as if what he is saying is always a revelation.
Tirico is very good, and Kornheiser may make things interesting. Who knows what kind of lid they will put on him. I guess they hope for Cosell II. Hopefully he will just relax and be himself, which should be just fine. As long as he doesn't try and force it ala Miller.

Put me in the "Hate Joe" column as well. I guess I'm lucky it'll be on cable now so I won't be tempted to try to sit through another one of his games.
OTOH, I guess this means he won't be broadcasting any Sunday games!

Hate Joe here. He isn't much worse than Simms, though.

theisman is better than simms. I grew a strong dislike for simms this season.

No PTI during football season + Theismann in the booth = catastrophe
If they'll let Tony K be himself it'll average out to bearable. Where's Lawrence Taylor when you need him?

PTI will be "on location" on MNF days. The show goes on.
I guess I'm one of the few that never had a problem with Theismann. I liked the Maguire/Theismann/Patrick trio on SNF.

It sounds like a great team to me. I'm not a huge fan of Theisman ,but I love TK and think the interaction with him and Theisman could really be great(for you Theisman haters, Tony can handle Joe if/when he gets a little full of himself).Tirico is a great play by play and should be able to ride herd on the other two...this has the potential to be a great team.

That's a relief to hear, J. The first time TK role-plays Theismann could be the greatest moment in TV history.

Al Michaels, who originally agreed to stay on with MNF, asked out because he did not share ESPN's vision of where they were going with this franchise. Many would not be surprised to see him at NBC for Sunday nights with his old MNF partner Madden.

Regarding the new crew, I think Tirico will do well, and I think they are looking for a bit of the 'reporters edge' that Cosell once gave the show with Kornheiser. I am not a fan of Joe Theisman as a commentator.

I think Tirico is solid announcer in general. I used to listen to Korny's morning show a few years ago but at least back then it lacked substance. I'm not a Theissman fan either. I like Korny on PTI though so who knows. I just see the new place to be is Sunday night now, esp. since next year will be the first time they've been able to switch the games around for a good matchup for Sunday night only. Love Michaels and Madden. Guess NBC will bounce back nicely after the lengthy layoff.

can anyone find the article that says all this, I'm having a debate at work.
I think - During the 2nd half of the season Monday Night Football can swap out their games if the matchup is lousy
He thinks - Sunday Night Football is the one who can swap (not Monday)
Anyone know???

More people watch television on Sunday nights than any other night, and NBC will devote its entire Sunday night prime-time lineup to the NFL. The Sunday night games will start at 8:15 p.m. ET and include flexible scheduling for the final seven weeks of the season. Details on the flexible scheduling plan will be developed by the NFL.

Glad I could help out. I peeked in this thread earlier from work to see if anyone watched the Pro Bowl and had any comments about Theismann. He made the stupidest comment when Vick tossed up that long completion to Fitzgerald. Vick was being sacked and just chucked the ball into the air. Fitz made a great catch, but the NFC was lucky it wasn't intercepted. Theismann says something like, "Vick is learning to make that kind of throw this year..." There was a mini-pause after his comments and then Maguire called him out on it. Knowing Theismann, I shouldn't have expected him to admit it was a lame comment, but he tried to defend what he said and sounded stupider by the second. He falls into the group of guys who talk just to hear their own voice.

I wanted to stick my fork in my eye when they kept talking about reviewing the muffed punt in the end zone close to the end of the fisrst half. For what seemed like five minutes they talked about how there is no instant replay, and it was a bad call, when it was obviously a fumble (which the refs called correctly) and was recovered by the receiving team; not the kicking team as they believed. They ended their five minutes of banter, with something along the lines of, "oh, maybe the refs ruled fumble, and the receiving team recovered it." Misery.
