Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has violated the NFL's substance abuse policy for a fourth time and is facing a one-year suspension for the positive drug test, Denver television station KDVR reported on Sunday.

The Miami Herald, citing two sources of its own, confirmed the station's report that Williams had failed the test, but neither media outlet would say which substance Williams used.

An NFL spokesman told ESPN that the NFL had no comment on the report.

Williams has tested positive for marijuana three times and served a four-game suspension when he returned to the NFL last season following a one-year retirement.

Dolphins coach Nick Saban told ESPN he was not aware that Williams had tested positive and he was not allowed to comment, citing the confidential nature of the league's substance-abuse policy.

Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene declined to comment when reached by the Herald on Sunday night.

"Because of the confidential nature of the league's substance abuse policy, we can't comment on any aspect of that program," Greene told the newspaper.

Williams was also fined the equivalent of four weeks' salary after his second and third violations of the NFL policy, in December 2003 and the 2004 offseason.

Williams abruptly retired from the NFL in July 2004 and the Dolphins fell apart, losing their first six games and finishing 4-12 -- their worst season since the 1960s.

At the time of his return, Williams was ordered to pay the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract, although there has been no financial resolution between him and the team. He was scheduled to be paid the league minimum of $540,000 last season, but was docked four games' pay due to his league-mandated suspension and was fined another four games in pay, reducing his take to $285,882.

Williams' base salaries for the two coming seasons are $545,000 and $670,000, the minimum for a player (he entered the league in 1999) of his NFL tenure.

Motivated partly by the need for a paycheck, he accepted Saban's offer to return for the 2005 season. When he reported at the start of training camp, Williams publicly apologized for the impact caused by his retirement and teammates unanimously embraced his return.

The Dolphins finished the 2005 season 9-7, winning their last six games. Williams gained 743 yards and scored six touchdowns.

Williams won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award and the Doak Walker Award following his senior season at Texas, in 1998. The New Orleans Saints traded away all their picks in the 1999 NFL draft in order to get him.

In six seasons with New Orleans and Miami, Williams has 7,097 yards on 1,757 carries -- four yards per carry -- and 47 rushing touchdowns. His best season was in 2002 with Miami, when he gained 1,853 yards in 383 carries and ran for 16 TDs.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Looks like the papers ran their storys full of speculation (big surprise). Turns out that he didn't fail a test; he just didn't show up for it, according to Rotoworld.

Kind of makes the Miami Herald (and others) look just as dumb as Ricky...

The Miami Herald, citing two sources of its own, confirmed the station's report that Williams had failed the test, but neither media outlet would say which substance Williams used.

They forgot the part about "violating the league's substance abuse policy" which covers failing to report for a scheduled test and has nothing to do with being caught for a banned substance.

Rotoworld thinks Ricky will appeal the violation. I imagine the appeal will require a drug test.

Ricky Williams indeed failed a recent drug test, but the drug Williams tested positive for wasn't marijuana.
"This whole thing is a little confusing,'' one source told the Miami Herald. "I'll just leave it at that. The best way to say it is he violated the program." There is some belief that Williams has tested positive for legal supplements he's taking in connection to his yoga and holistic medicine practice. An appeal has already been filed, and will be heard in 4-6 weeks. Ricky might not be done just yet. Feb. 20 - 8:03 pm et

This is getting to be like a daytime soap...

From Rotoworld: ESPN.com has confirmed that Ricky Williams has already appealed his recent substance abuse policy violation.
NFL Network originally reported the news Monday night. Williams has reportedly failed a test, but not for marijuana. There is already some belief he has a chance to win the appeal.

I humbly retract my slamming of the media in #3. ;)

from rotoworld.com

NFL Network reports Ricky Williams lost his appeal hearing with the NFL on his drug suspension. Williams will be suspended for the 2006 season.
Williams' lawyer wouldn't comment on whether Ricky will play football again. He can apply for reinstatement in one year. Football-wise, the Dolphins have Sammy Morris and Travis Minor on the roster behind Ronnie Brown, but will probably draft someone at the position.

From the local Toronto Sun newspaper, the Toronto Argo's, the Toronto CFL team, is going to take a run at signing Ricky Williams to a contract.

So...now that Ricky is suspended, does he get to smoke it up all he wants? If so, he needs to head not to Toronto, but to the BC Lions...for...uh...well, "a golden opportunity".

Anyone who follows the CFL: what is the most money Ricky Williams can expect to make playing football in that league? $100,000 American? I mean he could clearly dominate at that level, but I have a hard time believing he would be motivated to play for relative chump change.

Ah, who knows.

Yes, I remember that.

It was quite a bit more than $100K, though.

Like $400K+ I think.

Sure, but isn't ganja cheaper in the Great White North?

You need to be thinking "cost of living" man.

Still, sarge.

I mean, this news was announced a few months ago. The new news (the reason this thread is back up) is that he lost his appeal.

I had heard that he was not snagged for marijuana use this time. I wonder what it was.

Maybe steroids?

The Argonauts are going to make Ricky take drug tests in order to play for them as well.

I heard that the Winnepeg Blue Bombers have already, or are very close to, signing Onterrio Smith to a contract.

As for the Argos, I think the front office just issued that statement to appease the fan backlash on signing a druggie. I hardly see the tests being a main factor here.

Crap, I was just updating my files and I had Onterrio on the Vikings still. Did they go ahead and cut ties with the Original Whizzinator, then?

Wow MC,
I can't believe you missed something like that.

Happened awhile back.

Apr. 26, 2006 - 7:57 pm et

Vikings released RB Onterrio Smith.
The Vikes immediately ended Smith's stay in Minnesota after he was denied reinstatement to the league. He's now suspended indefinitely, and his chances of returning to pro football has just gone down. Mewelde Moore and Ciatrick Fason's roles are more secure now behind Chester Taylor.

He is eligible to request reinstatement with the league in October and could latch on with a team.

REGINA, Saskatchewan -- Running back Ricky Williams broke his left arm in the second quarter of the Toronto Argonauts' 26-23 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday night and is out indefinitely.
