Bought a FF rag today, and there is an ad inside about a website running live auction drafts online. Free through aug 4, then if you want to use it after that date, its like $20 or so. I tried the demo and rather liked what I saw.

www.fantasyauctioneer.com

Was hoping a few others would look at it and tell me what you think.

I'm in another auction league and we were planning to use this last year, but we ended up scheduling our auction for the one day last year when the site was down due to technical issues, so I've only used it as a test. It seemed to work well then.

I don't see us getting done in 3 hours, as that would mean we'd have to get through one player per minute. I would think we'd need 4 - 4.5 hours to finish our league's auction. I'm FOR using this as long as we can find a time that all 12 managers can make the auction - if that's not possible, then we should go forward as before.

As long as I have at least 2 days' notice, I can make an auction on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays after 6pm (except for 7/26), plus anytime Saturdays after 2pm and any time Sundays.

Except for this coming Sunday, I'm free any day after work and all weekends.

P.S. The later at night, for me, the better.

yeah, 3 hrs is probably not quite right. 4 sounds closer.

There is a little clock that fills as time goes by. When it turns totally red, the nbid is closed. Only takes about 30 secs without a bid, and you win the player. (Voice calls out...going once...going twice....Gone.) Then it appears the winning manager nominates the next player up for bids.

I am not in favor of a quick auction like that...30 seconds means if you go piss you may miss somebody you want. Just don't like that at all. Or you place a bid and somebody outbids you with 2 seconds left...does the clock reset? That helps somewhat but I still don't really like it...

yes, upon any bid raise, the clock resets.

If you gotta go for a short, you just say something first. Then the player who won the last bid, holds until you return, before they nominate the next player.

The 30 secs is a "guesstimate" from the demo. Quite possible that with the full blown live auction, we can set the clock to whever we like. 45 secs, 60. This is why I want everyone to look at it and then see what you think.

from the website:

Two of the biggest knocks on auctioning is that 1) it takes too long and 2) beginners wouldn't have any idea how much to pay for any particular player. The reason it takes too long is that you have to have a very disciplined auctioneer to keep the auction's pace going. This is where the Fantasy Auctioneer comes in. It paces the auction perfectly, forcing managers to decide within a given timeframe (which the commissioner can adjust before and during the auction) what players to place on the auction block or the system will choose for them. It also strictly enforces the predetermined idle bidding time limit (which the commissioner can also adjust before and during the auction) before the player on the block is sold. Auctioning with the Fantasy Auctioneer, for the most part, takes about the same amount of time as snake drafting. (A 12-team, 16 roster fantasy football auction usually takes about 2.5 to 3.0 hours to complete.)

One quick sidebar-When I sign into yahoo I don't see our league or my team listed. I had to switch accounts for security reasons...can I get a new invite to DW12DW12 (dsw827@aol.com). Thanks.

Also, if we can change the time frame to long enough then I would be OK with it, but not really in favor of it. One thing about the slow auction is that there is strategy to when players a brought out, bidding, etc that you would lose in a format like this. I will do whatever the majority wants though...

THK....done....

sending out via the auction website, an invitation to a live auction mock draft for next Sunday 1 pm Pacific time. (4 pm eastern, 3 pm central, etc etc etc)

Bid time limit is 20 seconds. (longest available)
Selection time limit is 45 seconds. (If you dont nominate someone within the time limit, the system nominates someone for you.)

The site will display (for this mock) SRP (suggested retail price) based upon:

1) $200 salary cap (site assumes you will spend ALL of the 200)
2) 1pt/10 yds ru/re, 6 pt ru/re TD, 4 pts pa TD, team def scoring

Rosters will be for this mock, limited to what we have...10 starters and 5 bench.

For this mock, starters are
1xQB
2xRB
2xWR
1xWR/TE/RB
1xWR/TE
1xTE
1xK
1xD

What I hope to achieve..

1) find out how well/poorly the site/system will work for us.
2) get feedback
3) see how readily the clock can be "stopped" for managers needs.

it looks like the site will randomly assign "draft positions", then snake through them each round. When its your "turn", is when you nominate a player for auction, not by winning the previous player.

I am not in favor of a fast draft. I think the slow draft we did last year was ok: you don't need to evaluate every single player before the draft starts, you simply evaluate them when they are on the board.
I think that was the key of success to my draft last year. I took that research-wisdom into the RIFC-draft (which started halfway through the auction) and competed there well enough to get promoted to the big league this year.

a different problem would be finding a time-frame. I am living in Austria which is 6 hours ahead. this means that when we do a live-draft it should end no later than 8pm ET (2am local time) on any given day. I also don't know as of yet on which weekends I can be available.

The timing can be made to work. I just did a live auction mock, letting 11 computers pose as the other managers. Same rules pretty much as we use, $200 budget...took 2 hrs 40 minutes.

I got snookered a cple times by the computers, while I was trying to "up bid" and they didnt bite. (bstrds!!!!) lol My first three "buys" left me with one hell of a WR corps, but no money to speak of for RBs: S Smith/T Holt and R Moss were the first 3 players I landed. (Then I quit trying to bump bid the computers. lol)

QB Hasselback $18
RB C Brown $10
RB C Martin $8
WR S Smith $40
WR T Holt $37 (one of my efforts to bump bid)
WR/RB R Moss $29 (another effort to bump bid)
WR/TE K Winslow $7
TE T Heap $10
K Vinatieri $4
D Chi $7

Bench
B1 Car D $6
B2 J Wilkins $1
B3 Lendale White $4 (another late pickup)
B4 T Green $3 (last pickup)
B5 C Houston $1 (next to last pickup)

the invite I sent out, is for a MOCK live auction draft. Not a concern if you cant make it. I can set comps (I think) to sub for you. But please do look into the site and ensure it works on your system. You can also create your own mock auction to start immediately and that way you can a "flavor" for how it works.

re my post 12 above and the mock I did today:

Alexander/Tomlinson/L Johnson...all went for more than $70

Portis/T Barber/Rudi and Edge....all went for more than $50

Smith/Holt/Owens went for the $40 range

HUGE numbers of RBs went for $25-$35.....Reggie Bush went for too much. lol

Since this is a mock, I will check in sometime during the draft. I don't think that I will be here at the start.

I would not be able to use that website or the software. I live in the boonies so they don't have high speed net out here unless ya wanna shell out $100 bucks a month for unreliable satellite service. So if we were to use that site for the final draft I would have to bow out of the league. Let me know what you guys decide so you can find a replacement.
