Subject: a commish needs help

ok here is the problem (this might be long). i'm the commish of a league and we are doing a keeper league for the first time and have added 2 new teams giving us 14. the way it is set up is that the keeper round is not the first round of the draft but instead, basically, a seperate process. so it looks like this
team 1 (newbie) team 2 (newbie) team 3 (returning) team 4 (returning) etc ... team 14 (last years champ)
once everyone announces their keeper, team 1 gets the next pick (which is in essence the first pick of the draft). team 14 gets the 14th pick then the 15th(rnd 2, pick 1) and so on.
the problem is that some owners, particularly the returning champ (who has the 14th pick) is complaining about the keeper round not being part of the draft. in his view, he thinks after everyone announces their keeper, he should have the next pick (as opposed to going back to team 1) because it should begin to snake after the keeper round.
this is annoying because half of the league understands why the system is set up the way it is while the other half doesn't.
i've tried to resolve this by either saying no keeper league (which no one wanted) or giving up the draft pick the round you selected your keeper in the previous season (which was refuted because, according to some, it was unfair because i took larry johnson in round 8).
so what do you all think? should i keep it the way it is or do i switch it? |

Tell the returning champ I said he needs to quit whining. Jesus, he wants to get a keeper and choose before everyone else, even though he won it all last year?
That's the most counter-intuitive thing I've ever heard of. He's lucky it's a serpentine draft. In my keeper league, we don't snake, so the champ would pick last in every round.
The way you have it set up is the way to go. Honestly, the newbies (who obviously have no keepers) ought to get 2 picks early on, or else they are certainly going to be awful for a long time to come.

I agree with Motley. The new teams are already two keeper-level players behind. The champ should stop whining.
In several leagues I've been in, the newbies get to take their keepers from any team's roster, so long as no single team loses more than one player in the expansion draft. Tell him it could be worse.

I'd actually go one better. The newbies should get to pick a keeper from the dregs. Then they should get the 1st and 2nd overall. Then I'd go non-snake.
Why are you going keeper if noone wants it, btw?

i'd tell the champ to pull up his panties and be a mensch.
1. not sure how many keepers you get, but let's say you have four.
i'd do something where each team protects 2 guys, then the newbies get to take 2 keepers each from the unprotected players, but can not take more than one per team.
then i'd let everyone else protect 2 more, and the newbies get 2 from the leftovers.
that keeps your new teams somewhat competitive.
2. also, i'd dump that snake draft. a snake draft is done to keep things fair in a one-year league, or the first year of a keeper league.
after that, it oughta be a straight draft.

I would throw everyone back into the draft since you did not previously have a keeper league. Draft strategies can be very different if you are drafting keepers vs a yearly league. The addition of two new teams that have no keepers just gives more weight to starting over fresh.
Rather than trying to find some compromise that will never make anyone happy, just start from scratch and go from there.

1) I would let the two new people take whoever is available from the throwbacks.
2) Then I would go the route that most folks do these day and do away with the snake draft and do an auction. An auction draft allows everyone to have a shot at any player every year (if they are willing to pay the price) except for your 14 held players.

Ugh. I hate auction drafts. It's an entirely different way of populating teams. Might as well disband the league.

Some people like them, that's for sure. But I can't imagine a league suddenly deciding to go from a draft to an auction (or vice versa).

couple threads down PD, "Live Auction Website", I posted a link to a site that is setup for fast auction drafts online. Click it, sign in (free) and create an auction to "start now", just you against 11 computer players. Set your budget and give it a whirl. Takes about 2-2 1/2 hrs to draft a 12 team, 16 player roster.

very good, thank you everyone. you all helped me reach my decision quicker and easier. i think this is the most fair system especially with newbie teams. i mean in the nfl, when an expansion team is established, the teams protect X number of players and the new team graps who they want. then they start the actual draft if i'm not mistaken

That is exactly right, which is how the expansion draft I described above came about.
