0 Subject: H2H vs. Points leagues

In a recent RIFC post, culdeus made an interesting observation that the RIFC is really a points league (vs. H2H), due to doubleheader scheduling and also because the last 2 playoff slots are reserved for the top points teams who have not otherwise qualified.

H2H is clearly the dominant form of fantasy football. H2H scoring brings an additional element of luck into the process. It's not uncommon for a high scoring team to take a "tough" loss because the opponent had an even better week. And while this may tend to even out over the course of a season, I've been in leagues where that really isn't the case. Bad luck can really dominate the performance of some teams. And vice versa.

And maybe that's part of the allure of fantasy football. In this repect, it reminds me alot of poker, where both skill and luck are important elements. Over a short span, luck can easily dominate, but over the long haul, skill is clearly more important. Usually, fantasy football schedules do not constitute a long enough haul for skill to necessarily take precedence. Sustained success over many years is a likely result of superior skill. Winning a FF title in any year can be attributed to a wide variety of factors.

The point of this thread is not to debate the merits of points leagues vs. H2H leagues (although you may take that direction if you wish). My curiosity is whether those two different scoring styles should have much influence on draft picks. Is a more volatile player more valuable in one format vs. the other? Are there factors that should differentiate player rankings from one format to the other?

I think it would be if volatility were a consistent trait from season to season for players. From everything I've looked at regarding whether consistency carries over or not, I haven't seen anything that indicates that a streaky player one year will be streaky the next or vice versa.

Yes, albeit a small one. If you are playing in a points league, you do not need to worry about bye weeks for positions where you have multiple starters. You know every player is going to miss a game, and if you drafted 2 RB's with a bye in Week 7, it won't matter, because it has the same effect if the two guys had a bye in Week 7 and week 9. In a HTH league, I would likely pass on drafting my preferred RB2 if he has the same bye as my RB1.

My wishy-washy answer is, "probably." Volatile players will make you pull your hair out in HTH leagues, particularly in "important" positions like QB, RB, and WR - as they as usually the people that can both win a game for you or lose a game for you (IMO, positions like K, TE, and D seldom lose a game for you, but can easily win a game for you). Someone like Michael Vick should probably be more valuable in a points league, because you can guesstimate how many points you will get from throughout the course of the season, but have no idea on a week to week basis. Just looking at the RIFC, many of the early rationales explained that their pick was "consistant," while later picks are more volatile. This wouldn't matter as much in a points league.
