0 Subject: Dominc Davis Could be Put on IR

From the Houston Chronicle...

Domanick Davis can't be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.

Under league rules, anyone that passes a team physical to open camp and practices can't be placed on the PUP list. This means Houston would have to release Davis or place him on injured reserve if they don't feel they can use a roster spot waiting for him to get healthy. The most likely scenario is that Davis will be placed on I.R., ending his season. Stay away in fantasy leagues.

Who will be the starter here if it's not Davis? Wali Lundy? Antowain Smith?

So I guess it's Reggie Bush time, oops.

I am so glad I didn't take the chance on him. I had the opportunity in both drafts I've done and I just got a bad vibe. He hasn't practiced at all, and that's not a good type of player to have on your fantasy team.

Question: is Houston now akin to a "mini-Denver" with a RB rotation like the Bells? I think Lundy and Morrency have been getting all of the hype, but I've actually seen Antowain Smith listed as number 2 in a few places.

I envision a Tatum-Vernand/Mike-Wali split. That wouldn't be so bad for all of the people that took Lundy and Morrency.

And on a side note, have there ever been a pair of RB's on one team with more-difficult-to-remember-how-to-spell names than Wali Lundy and Vernand Morrency? Sheesh.

I read earlier that Smith may be cut. Perhaps Houston will keep him if DD goes IR. I've also ready that Wali will play the bulk of the game but Morency will definitely be used as well. So he could cancel out part of Wali's value. I guess we will all know soon.

I find it hard to believe they would IR DD for a bruised knee. It's probably either more serious or they are just trying to get him on the field and playing. I certainly don't know the financial ramifications, but it would seem like they would still have to pay him while on the IR and that also would probably count towards a year on his contract. If he could play after a few weeks, then what sense would it make to put him on IR?

I think as long as Smith has a decent showing this week they'll keep him around. FBG has been hyping Lundy, but I've seen others leaning more towards Morency, but pretty much everyone has been putting up Dom Davis warning flags for weeks (although didn't hear about the PUP vs. IR thing until now... very interesting decision to make). I think if they do put Dom on IR, that they'll very likely keep Smith around, just because he's more of a known quantity than the two younger guys. Kinda like the recent signings of Collins and George at QB... neither figures to start, but might at some point... and really you want those vets around just for stability, peace of mind, and to help the younger guys along.

(on RB Domanick Davis' place in the roster) “I don’t know. That is going to be a big call this week. It’ll be interesting to see how he comes back. I know he ran well while we were gone. That was encouraging. We’ll see what happens this week. We’ll probably have a sit-down Thursday before the game with himself, possibly his agent, the doctors, and everyone to just have a big meeting about where we are at. You won’t see him playing this week. For him to miss all this time, it’s not like all of a sudden he’s going to jump up there and play. It’ll be a tough decision for the final 53 for us as a team, and we’ll make that decision in the best interest of Domanick. I could probably have a better answer for you this time next week.”
...
(on running backs) “Well, here’s what we’re going to go. (RB) Wali (Lundy) is going to be here. (RB) Vernand (Morency) is going to be here. They have both done a good job. Do they have a long way to go? You bet. They have played hard, they have done a good job. They are going to be on this football team. We’re asking them to grow up and get better each and every day. If the season started tomorrow, then Wali Lundy’s going to be our starting back, and Vernand is going to play. They are both going to play. What I want to do this week is I want to take a hard look at (RB) Antowain (Smith) and (RB) Chris Taylor. Antowain is fresh, he has not played the past couple weeks. Basically this is a big night for him, so we’ll look at those two players and see how it goes, but we have a tough decision to make with those two guys. It’s going to be made through the course of this next week.”

(on Domanick Davis missing so much) “I’m very concerned. There is not much we can do about it, but I am very concerned about that situation. I’m more concerned about him, to be honest with you. Selfishly I could sit here and understand our problems at running back and playing with those young kids, but I see a guy that has done everything the doctors have asked him to do. There’s a guy that walked out there the first day of training camp and was feeling great, excited about the season, excited about what we’re doing. I watched him work for two days and then watched the knee respond the way it did. I know it’s been very frustrating for him. All we can do is be there for him. We’re concerned about him right now and doing what is right for him.”

I don't think it's just a bruised knee. I remember reading that his (right?) knee is missing a bunch of cartilage. you'd have to think that a problem like that would cause chronic pain/swelling. I was surprised to see him keep going high in drafts.

From CBS...

News: The Houston Chronicle reports that Texans RB Domanick Davis, who has been sidelined for all but two days of training camp with a bruised knee, could be in danger of getting cut. Head coach Gary Kubiak feels that he cannot gauge how important Davis is to his team if he can't even practice. "I'm very concerned," Kubiak said. "There's not much we can do about it, but I'm very concerned about that situation. It'll be a tough decision for the final 53. We'll make the decision based on what's best for Domanick and the team." Kubiak also announced that if the season started today, rookie Wali Lundy would start at running back, not Davis or Vernand Morency. Furthermore, Davis is not a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform list since he passed the Texans' physical at the start of training camp. Kubiak plans on meeting with Davis, his agent and the Texans' doctors soon.

Analysis: So let's review: Houston signed Davis to a new contract last August, giving him reportedly $8 million in signing bonus money, then passed on Reggie Bush in the NFL Draft. Now Davis could be cut. This is pretty grim news for those owners who spent a relatively high draft pick on Davis this year. However, consider the contract extension he signed; the Texans could have a tough time parting with him since he'd leave a big number on their salary cap. Fantasywise, drafting Davis as anything more than a middle- to late-round pick is not advised at this point. True, his knee could get better and he'd be back with Houston or another NFL team, but the thought of spending a significant pick on him shouldn't enter your head. Instead, aim for Lundy and/or Morency first, then try to sneak Davis onto your team later. If you already own Davis, try to pick up Lundy or Morency right now, but don't drop Davis until he's officially off the team.

Thanks for the info. I drafted Greg Jones on one team, so I needed a replacement. I went with Lundy for now since someone else picked up Toefield to replce Dom Davis.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak says that Domanick Davis will not be cut.

"The idea of cutting Domanick has not even played a factor," Kubiak said. "I don’t know where that came from." Unless the team decides to use a roster spot to wait on Davis' troublesome knee, he'll likely be placed in IR.

Davis said during the game telecast that his knee is practially bone on bone. He says he's a long way from coming back. Might take a year on IR. Sounds career ending to me.

Yikes

man, bypassing Reggie Bush is looking more and more like the biggest draft day blunder ever. Sam Bowie might actually lose his place in history...

Houston was going to suck anyway. The only way that turns into the biggest draft day blunder ever is if Mario Williams turns into a piece of sh!t, and I don't think he will.

I suppose if Reggie Bush turns out to be Barry Sanders v 2.0 then it will look pretty bad, too, but I haven't heard anyone characterize Bush in that way yet.

I hate to see this happening to Dom Davis. The guy was just getting his career started and he showed plenty of talent. I hate to hear them saying his livelihood is threatened. NFL life is tough.

That's because if Barry Sanders v. 1.0 had played for the Saints, he never would have gotten out of beta testing.

I thought the consensus opinion was about 50/50 on it happening... though if they're putting Davis on IR, I figured they'd lean more towards holding onto Smith (along with Morency and Lundy). Wouldn't have been a big surprise either way though.

I guess Antowain officially sucks. Considering the position the Texans are in (they really need the depth), that they cut him speaks loudly to his ability.

That's exactly what I was thinking, bro. Before preseason started, I heard some good stuff about an undrafted free agent they signed named Quadtrine Hill. He was on my "deep sleeper" list, but apparently that list is so deep I can't even find it. I haven't read a single story about Hill since the preseason started. Then we started to get good news stories on Morency and Lundy. I think Houston must be comfortable with their young backs because they also let Wells go (who I believe has recently signed with the Colts) and didn't try to resign him.

Yeah, I was sure Wells would be starting this year if Davis couldn't go. Shows what I know. Then when they signed Smith, it was obvious to me they wouldn't re-sing Wells. Makes no sense as Wells played well last year when he started. When they brouhgt in Lundy, I was thinking Morency would be out. Then when Morency improved, I figured Smith was out. Still, with the way coach acted toward Morency, I was pretty sure Lundy would be given first chance at backup and would start the first few weeks.

Now Davs is out and Lundy and Morency have done well. Smith is cut in favor of an undrafted FA RB. I posted in #4 that Smith may be cut. Shocked that people were drafting him in fantasy leagues. I think Bush would have really held up the Texans if they had drafted him and that was the bigger issue so they went with another guy that could be huge. Bush hasn't done particularly well yet, but I think he will. Not sure he will be a superstar or not, but he has that potential.

I think Bush will be a superstar. Several rookies have impressed me so far; Bush, Maroney, Norwood, and I think we can expect all of them to get better with some seasoning.

Wells did okay when he filled in at starter at the end of last year, but his YPR has never been impressive. Maybe if he latched on with a solid running team, because he seems like a straight-ahead power runner.
