• Tough times in the NFL for Heisman winners. Doug Flutie (1984) retired this offseason. It looks like Vinny Testaverde ('87) is gone for good, too. Eddie George ('95) still hopes the phone will ring with an offer. Charles Woodson ('97) relocated to Green Bay but appears to be a shell of the player he once was. Ricky Williams ('98) was banished to Canada and promptly got hurt. Ron Dayne ('99) is working on his third team after being released a second time, and Chris Weinke (2000) is resigned to being a career backup in Carolina.
We know how things worked out for Eric Crouch ('01) and Jason White ('03), so that leaves only the USC trio of Carson Palmer ('02), Matt Leinart ('04) and Reggie Bush ('05) to wear the mantle of greatness that the trophy bestows.

Charlie Ward's been doing alright.
I guess Don was only talking about guys that actually played in the NFL and were decent.

I don't get why they would list Flutie and Testaverde and leave out Tim Brown, Bo Jackson, and Barry Sanders. I do understand that there haven't been many great or even good NFL players who won the Heisman since Sanders won it in 88.

Flutie and Testaverde were mentioned and not the others because those two most likely played their last games last season, while the others have been retired for some time.

Okay, kinda. Tim Brown and Eddie George both last played in 2004.

Yeah, TB, I read the article and it was clear he was talking about the people that played last season and weren't going to be playing this season.
Otherwise I would have griped about Danny Wuerffel. Heh.
