0 Subject: sitting a player for strategy sake?

so, going into tonight's game, i'm up by about 3.5 points. my opponent has no one going tonight, i've got Drew Brees.

do i sit on Brees, assuring myself of the win, or do i go for the points because they may make a difference later in the season.

i'm nervous, because turnovers are very costly in this league, and a few QBs this season have already had negative points.

thoughts?

I've never been one for playing "safe" like that. Not in pool leagues, not in fantasy. I go for the throat. But then, thats my nature. :) I do think, if it were late in the season and the win assured me of the payoffs, that I'd be far more inclined to sit the player in that scenario.

That said...smart money sits him and guarantees the win.

Are the possible points more valuable that the W? If the W is more important than sit him. I probably would myself.

You sit that clown to prove a point, that you are the boss and you won't take any of his shenanghans. You humiliate him in front of his family and friends so he will come out stronger next week.

And if that doesn't get your team's attention, you need to turn into a Woody Hayes-Bobby Knight lovechild and hit an opposing player with a chair. That will rally the troops.

Benching a player is certainly a viable strategy.

But before sitting Brees, make sure (as much as possible) that the scoring is correct. You don't want to discover on Tuesday morning that a scoring correction reverses that narrow margin.

I'm in a similar situation, but with a much larger margin (so large in fact that it's really a moot point fortunately). This situation did cross my mind though. I think it really depedns on your standings system, especially this early in the season. You may need those total points as a tie breaker later. I don't think there's an automatic best answer, but I certainly agree that it's a viable strategy and not bush league in any way.

I actually got a win several years ago this way. I was down a couple points going into the Monday Night game and my opponent had a K and proceeded to miss two FGs. I ended up winning it all that year. Not sure if that win got me into the playoffs but I do know that the loss kept him out of the playoffs. In H2H leagues, a win is the most important thing. I'd take Guru's advice. I'd think that the way Brooks has been going, you should be ok, but a win is a win is a win.

Another thing to take into consideration, many leagues require you to start a full roster. Check your league rules. Many leagues will forfeit your week's games if you leave a spot unfilled. Since most teams have played already, really your only hope would be to have a bye week player you could put in at QB to fill the slot. If you don't have another QB, this could all be moot.

There is one league that I am in that I wouldn't consider this, the RIFC League. But that is basically a points league with the H2H function. In all my other leagues points are as important as the win. I agree with Guru, check the points and sit his arse down. And as Seattle said maybe that'll get his attention and he'll put up MVP points for you the rest of the year. The rest of your team should take note too. Fumble, throw a pick, drop a pass: Risk being benched the next week.

I'm with Guru and Ref. Triple-check the scoring first! Then, triple-check the rules!

After that, I'd bench him. I've done it before (twice, I think!) and it's never been an issue at the end of the year. The 10-20 points you might gain is not worth the potential L, at least in my book. You can make up that 10-20 points as the season wears on. It'll be harder to make up the missed W.

However, with Ender's situation, I'd start him. If it's going to take 4 INTs and 2 lost fumbles and no yards gained for me to lose, then I start him. But, if it only takes 150 yards, 1 INT, and 1 lost fumble, then I bench him.

I should have listened to myself.

I had a 0.70 point lead going into tonight with Grossman, for me, the only player left playing for either team.

2 INTs and 2 lost fumbles later, I'm left praying for a great second half by Grossman & Co.

If it's going to take 4 INTs and 2 lost fumbles

Got any good stock tips?

LOL! I wish I did... then again, I could probably just throw a dart, like I did with that statement, and come up with something. ;)
