0 Subject: Collusion or the greatest manager ever?

I am usually the last person to ever poke my nose in someone else s trades, but this situation seems a little odd. Shaun Alexander for Brandon Jacobs and Maurice-Jones Drew. Two back up RBs for the #3 pick in the draft? I know Alexander isnt going to be back for another week, but come on.

This is the same owner that traded Frank Gore and Steve Smith for Larry Johnson and Chris Chambers. He had the 12th pick in the draft and now he has the #1 and #2 picks from the draft. Impressive.

They may be questionable trades, but I wouldn't say it's collusion. Here's how I could break down the trades...

Alexander for Jacobs/Jones-Drew
Alexander has a crack in his foot. Given that he's a running back, that may be the worst place for him to have a cracked bone. On top of that, he's listed as out for Week 6 and Rotoworld is questioning his return even for Week 7. Plus, there's no guarantees when he comes back.

On the other side of the trade, I've seen people in other leagues picking up Jacobs and I don't really know why. 124 rushing yards and 24 receiving yards in 4 games. He's not vulturing many (any?) of Tiki's TDs, so even that doesn't seem like a reason. However, Jones-Drew is just a Fred Taylor injury away from being a starting RB; meaning potentially his next game. Even while he hasn't been the starter, Jones-Drew has managed 177 rushing yards, 91 receiving yards, and 4 TDs in 5 games. He's also had 2 games with 13 attempts.

Would I trade away Alexander for Jacobs/Jones-Drew? Probably not. But, the Alexander owner may be desperate. Further, it's not like the guy getting Alexander has anything guaranteed at this point in time. Just because a guy is the #3 pick in the draft doesn't mean he's the #3 guy in the league all year. Right now, while he's not playing and has a crack in his foot, Alexander clearly falls behind even Brandon Jacobs... for now.

Gore/Smith for Johnson/Chambers
I'm not even sure which side of this trade I'd want to be on. Smith clearly has some hamstring issues, but can be explosive. One 100-yard game with a couple of TDs can make everything better. Gore will have issues in SFOs offense, or lack thereof, but he's still putting up solid yardage numbers. A TD here and a TD there could easily make things all better.

On the other side, Larry Johnson is also having a monster yardage season. If he's not getting 100 yards on the ground, he's getting it in the air. Still, he just suffered a neck injury and there could be some questions about that. Chambers, on the other hand, is going to be in No Man's Land for a while. As if his season weren't bad enough already, he's going to have Joey Harrington as his QB. If anybody was worse than Culpepper, it might be Harrington. For the last 3 weeks, Chambers has almost as many rushing yards as receiving... and not in a good way.

So, in the end, looking at it from this manager's position, it's a WR downgrade for a RB upgrade, though, again, I don't see a huge difference. But maybe it's just me.

----

In the end, I just don't see collusion. A valid argument can be made for both sides of those trades, whether you'd want to be on the other side or not.

BTW, I also wouldn't call him the greatest manager ever until Alexander comes back fully healthy and Johnson is shown to be 100%.

And by the time that happens, he may have already lost enough games that a 100% Alexander and 100% Johnson won't help save his season. It's hard to say until a lot of games and weeks have gone by.

Of the "Big 3", only one has so far had nrs which approach justifying their draft positions. I'm not at all sure that unless its a keeper league, at this point I'd be looking to add these guys to my roster.(Not both anyway. Alexander, as KKB alluded to above, with a foot injury...may not "be back" this season. Oh he'll play, but will he be the RB we "expect"? Personally, I think not.)

if this is a keeper league, i think it's a terrible trade for the guy acquiring Alexander.

to me, the long-term (as in, next year), benefits of Jacobs and Drew outweigh those of Alexander, who is banged up and hurting, getting up there in years for a RB, and has a serious injury for his position.

also, in most scoring systems, i'd wager that Drew has way outscored Alexander - even doubling his output in some systems, and that Jacobs has come close to matching it.

once you get this far into the season, where a guy was drafted is absolutely meaningless.

alexander's value is way down, but he should still bring more than jacobs/jones-drew. not collusion, and not grossly un-balanced, so I wouldn't veto it.

If it's a keeper league, he probably got the worst of both trades.

Some people are obsessed with obtaining the best "name" players. It's clear this guy is one of those. You can often get a nice deal from people like that, although I don't really like playing with them. They tend to disrupt the balance in the league in more instances than a normal player would.

No vetoes here, but this trend is clearly not desirable.
