0 Subject: ATTN Dallas Cowboy fans

Let me start by saying I am a Steeler fan, but not a Cowboy hater. I'm "Cowboy-neutral" I was watching the game last night which spurred the following question with a drunk Cowboy.

A few years ago during Parcell's first season there was a thread titled "Look whose in first place" or some such title in which Dallas fans were giddy with excitement after about 6-7 games and critics pointed out that Dallas hadn't proved anything yet....

Well, how do you assess the Bill Parcell's era now? Is he a bust? Does he have any of the blame? Will Bill ever be a success while Jerry is in charge?

I know as a Steeler fan, if I had the record dallas has over the past several years with high-profile coach, I'd be bummed.

Just curious if you have lowered your standardsso much as to be satisfied?

i think a lot depends on how this season plays out.

anything short of a deep run in the playoffs (at the very least), makes the Parcells' era a bust.

i don't agre with his move last night. the old "switching QBs at halftime" thing just sucks. i'd have no problem if he announced Romo as his starter beginning this week, but it doesnt make sense to me to switch in mid-game.

Not sure what it is, but from all the Dallas papers, they are insisting that Tuna is getting the players he wants and doing what he wants. They are actually saying that Jerry isn't hands on with the Tuna and the team...

Which leads me to wonder, is Tuna done?

Agreed. They've been pretty decent lately, and if they go deep this year, which seems quite possibly, you have to call Parcells a good move.

Granted, they haven't won the Super Bowl (and haven't really been that close). The last Dallas dynasty did a much better job of home-growing players, and that makes a big difference.

For the record, I am indeed a Cowboy-hater, but will give due when it's due. If they make it to the Super Bowl this year and lose, I call the Parcells era a success.

Agreed with the above regarding a deep playoff run this year. The NFC has been available for the taking the past few years so not even getting close would be a bust in my book considering expectations.

And count me in with those who say the halftime switch doesn't thrill me.

I think the Cowboys have so many problems it would be hard to address all of them in a brief thread.

It all starts with the offensive line. Until its completely rebuilt bad things are going to happen, reagradless of the QB.

It seems obvious to me that Jones has a large role in player moves. How else do you account for T.O.'s spot on the roster? I'm pretty sure Parcells would love to send his ass down the road.

The Tuna looked like a deer in the headlights last night, and that carried over to his post game press conference. He looked like he wanted to retire, go fishing or read a good novel, rather than coach that team.

I would'nt be suprised if Romo is named the starter this week Bledsoe will play the retirement card. He went thorugh that with Brady and I doubt he'll hang on just to carry a clip board.

re last nights game, I thought the whole thing turned on what I saw as a BS sack call of "in the grasp" on 3rd down when Bledsoe completed a 26 yd pass play for a 1st down. IIRC, it 12-7 at that pt. Give them that 1st down and a FG, its 12-10 at the half. Not so bad and then Romo doesnt start the 2nd half and NY doesnt get the INT on the 1st play from scrimmage and the resulting cheap TD. Whole game takes on a different complexion then.

At this point, I see Bledsoe retiring. Not sure who else wouold be interested in him, that he'd be willing to go to.

I thought the whole game turned on what was the worst draft since 99 and maybe of all time.

1st round pick can't play
2nd round pick can't block
3rd round pick got waived and then resigned for spot duty
The mid to late round picks have shown nothing and throughout that no OL were picked at all.

You can't exist in the salary cap era with those terrible drafts. There are some serious empty shirts on defense now. Canty and Spears have done nothing to warrant their starting spots. The two guys they cut to NOLA are tearing it up.

Sigh

When the team is in that bad a shape you are going nowhere and just let Romo have a shot. Bledsoe is a corpse out there.

parcells is one of the more overrated coaches in the nfl. teams have risen and fallen since bill won a playoff game, let alone the superbowl. this doesn't look like it's shaping up to be his year either.

as something of a cowboy fan, he's a bust. even barry switzer won a few playoff games. ;~)

he's the coach of the team, he doesn't deserve all the blame, but he's far from blameless. if for nothing else then the decision to bring bledsoe into a situation where they didn't have the line required to keep him upright. anyone who's followed drew's years in ne remembers that given time bledsoe can be devastating, but woe be onto you if he can't be protected.

I was the one who started that thread about the cowboys being in 1st place. I will now say I have since stopped being a cowboys fan, or atleast I have stopped until TO is no longer a member of the team. As great of a player as TO is, I think he is a cancer to any team he plays on. I am also not happy with the way the cowboys did their draft this year. Why draft a player like carpenter with your 1st round pick and then not even play him? Seems stupid to me.

What Keeps Bill Parcells Awake at Night

By MICHAEL LEWIS
Published: October 29, 2006

...

Bill Parcells is the only coach in N.F.L. history to take four different teams to the playoffs, but that only begins to set him apart. In 1983, in his first N.F.L. head coaching job, he took over a New York Giants team that had one winning season over the previous decade, turned it around on a dime and led it to Super Bowl titles in the 1986 and 1990 seasons. In 1993, he became head coach of the New England Patriots a year after they finished 2-14. Two seasons later they were 10-6 and in the playoffs for the first time in eight years; another two seasons later, they were in the Super Bowl. From there Parcells went to the Jets, who were coming off a 1-15 season, and coached them to a 9-7 record in his first year and a 12-4 record in his second. The Cowboys had finished 5-11 three seasons in a row before Parcells arrived in 2003. His first year they were 10-6 and reached the playoffs. No N.F.L. coach has ever proven himself so clearly to be a device for turning a losing team into a winning one. And yet, even now, as he begins his 16th season as a head coach in the N.F.L., he lives the psychological equivalent of a hand-to-mouth existence.

hey Chode - still flapping your gums?

the Cowboys were like a completely different team out there tonight.

Tony Romo looked poised and collected, the Cowboys looked like a team with a purpose and a mission, and they just went about completing the task at hand.

i'm trying not to get too excited because it's just one game, but Tony Romo looked like the real deal out there.

It's hard not to feel good about how things look at this exact moment. I'll still feel better when we get some more help for the o-line, though.

I'll take it. A win is a win is a win, but this was one of those wins that shouldn't have been; and those are the best kind.

Show me a winning November before I start making plans for January, though.

a co-worker (also a Cowboys fan, in a sea of Giant fans here in NY) and i had this conversation last week.

one thing Romo does is makes the O-Line better just by his style of play.

when you have faith that your QB can move around, can go left to right, can step up in the pocket, you can relax a little more, and thusly, play better.

when you're worried that your statue in the backfield might shatter every time he fades back to throw, the pressure must be unbelievable.

If by "flapping [my] gums" you mean to ask whether I'm still confident that I was right 2 years ago, that all your 2004 hot air was in hindsight completely unjustified, and the Cowboys weren't anywhere near as good in the 2004 season as you and all the panglossian fans would have had us believe ... then yeah, sure, I'm still flapping my gums.

And when you describe Romo as the "real deal", I'm curious whether you mean in the sense that you tried to convince us (and yourself) that Quincy Carter was the next QB to lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl, or "real" in the sense that Drew Henson was the Cowboys' QB of the future? Just trying to get a sense of what to read into your assessment of Romo.

Actually, I like what Romo brings to the Cowboys (whatever it is, it's a hell of a lot better than Drew Bledsoe), and he seems like a decent kid judging by the few interviews/personal pieces I've seen in the last week. So there. But I do recall a steady stream of Cowboy propaganda during those threads in 2004, which basically came to a screeching halt when the Dolphins annihilated and demoralized the team and all its fans on Thanksgiving. Nice win for the 'Boys last night, just try to temper expectations and don't go off the deep end (again).

OK, I give up trying to figure this team out. I wonder how many people have had literal heart attacks the last 2 seasons watching them play.

Tony Romo & Jessica Simpson dating?

btw, the Tony Romo-Jessica Simpson rumours are apparently just that, rumours.

the Cowboys being the hottest team in the NFC, however, is a fact.

How 'bout them Cowboys?

Romo said in a live interview after last week's game that he just had a date with her two days prior. Not that I care, but doesn't seem like much of a rumor to me.

i was going by this articleabour Romo:

Of course, Parcells hasn't stopped the rest of the world from gulping in the NFL's Tex-Mex edition of Fernandomania. From the true rumors (he has hired a publicist to manage his overnight fame) to the false ones (he hasn't gone out on a date with Jessica Simpson … yet), Romo has taken an old nickname and made it all the rage without the 'roids.
