Instant replay taking away great catches? It might just be me or even when a "CATCH" is made it is replayed and some evidence of the ball touching the ground reverses the call. I guess my take is that the ball has already been caught by the player and that it is inevitable that he, the ball, and his hands come into the ground. But it is the fact the ground did not catch the ball. Example was the OSU vs Michigan game tonight. Ruled an interception on the field by the OSU defense player only to be reversed after review. Apparently the ball touched the ground. I say yes it did touch the ground but the player caught the ball with both hands and brought it in as he hit the ground. I mean are we saying no more diving catches will ever be a catch. Reward the player making an outstanding catch. They should be overturning where the ball hit the ground FIRST and not the hands. I have seen this time and time again where the player has two hands on the ball and as he comes to the ground the ball inevitably touches the ground. Hands still grasping the ball. It is a CATCH folks. |

I'm not sure the play you are talking about, but the player has to have caught the ball (i.e., in control) before the ball touches the ground. If he's not in control, it isn't a catch.

If he has two hands on the ball as he's diving, he needs to keep one (or both) of those hands between the ball and the ground. If he can't manage to do that and the ball hits the ground, no catch. Having the ball between your hands for a fraction of a second before the ball touches the ground is not a "catch".

Doug the grass will almost always touch the ball!
I am refering to the Interception that was overturned in the OSU vs Michigan game.

he never said anything about the grass.
there's a difference between the grass and the ground.

Always an iffy call, but that was most definitely NOT an interception. Either way, OSU still won, don't linger on calls that don't matter.

Ball touches the ground (ie, the ground "helps" with the catch)...it aint a catch.
