6th Annual NFL Draft Preview
With a two-week break between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, it seems like the perfect time for the 6th Annual NFL Mock Draft.
This version comes without any trade projections, but if I was new Oakland Raiders' head coach Lane Kiffin, I'd force the front office to trade down. Oakland needs a bunch help, and no prospect in the draft can provide that instantly. A trade with Miami would have made sense because of the Nick Saban - JaMarcus Russell connection and the Dolphins' pressing need for a franchise quarterback, but then Nick Saban left for Alabama so that's probably not going to happen. Anyway, before Mel Kiper, Jr. comes out with his mock draft, here's mine:
1. Oakland: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU - Russell reminds many of Daunte Culpepper (when Culpepper was good) with his arm strength and size. He seems too intriguing for Al Davis to pass up although he struggled a bit against top competition. As I mentioned above, Oakland could also trade down.
2. Detroit: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame - As crazy as it sounds, the Lions might take a wide receiver with their first round pick. Shocking. I’m praying it happens just for comedy's sake, but I don’t think it will. Matt Millen plays it “safe” and takes Quinn… who turns out to be a bigger bust than Joey Harrington.
3. Cleveland: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech - The Browns hope the addition of Johnson to a receiving corps that already features Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow, Jr. would jumpstart this stagnant offense. Adrian Peterson would also fit here.
4. Tampa Bay: Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas - The Bucs will need to fill the void created by Simeon Rice’s departure.
5. Arizona: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin - Matt Leinart will be doing back flips if Thomas falls this far. He’ll protect Leinart for the next ten years.
6. Washington: Reggie Nelson, S, Florida - Coupling Nelson with Sean Taylor would work wonders for the Redskins’ defense. This team is not far from competing.
7. Minnesota: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson - Former first round picks Erasmus James and Kenechi Udeze have been major busts. Adams would be a solid upgrade.
8. Houston: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma - The Texans catch a huge break if this scenario unfolds on draft day. Personally, I’d rather have the Peterson / Mario Williams combo than Reggie Bush / anyone else available at this point in the draft.
9. Miami: Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville - Miami needs youthful, talented players on its aging defense, and Okoye would definitely bring those qualities. He could be the most interesting prospect in this year’s class. He’s only 19, but he graduated in four years from Louisville. He’s young but has plenty of experience and "upside."
10. Atlanta: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan - The Hall cornerback duo (DeAngelo and Leon) would make throwing the ball on this defense difficult.
11. San Francisco: Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC - The 49ers seem intent on surrounding Alex Smith with as many weapons as possible.
12. Buffalo: Alan Branch, DT, Michigan - The Bills get the run-stopping defensive tackle they've been craving for years.
13. St. Louis: LaRon Landry, S, LSU - Landry is a four-year starter that figures to play right away for the Rams.
14. Carolina: Ted Ginn, Jr, WR, Ohio State - Ginn would give Jake Delhomme another weapon besides Steve Smith and add a playmaker to the special teams units.
15. Pittsburgh: Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU - Hines Ward won’t be around forever, and Bowe would provide a nice third option for Big Ben.
16. Green Bay: Levi Brown, OT, Penn State - I'll go out on a limb and predict Brett Favre will come back for yet another season. He'll need protection.
17. Jacksonville: Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida - The Jaguars keep this homegrown talent in-state.
18. Cincinnati: Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska - Aside from keeping its players out of jail, the Bengals main focus this offeason will be improving their porous D.
19. Tennessee: Tony Ugoh, OT, Arkansas - The Titans know they need to protect franchise QB Vince Young.
20. N.Y. Giants: Daymeion Hughes, CB, California - The Giants' lack of skilled players in the secondary was apparent.
21. Denver: Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee - Much the same way San Francisco is stockpiling weapons for Alex Smith, Denver figures to do the same for Jay Cutler.
22. Dallas: Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh - The 'Boys are looking for a competent corner opposite Terrence Newman. They hope Revis will be their guy.
23. Kansas City: Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina - The only way to take the focus off of Larry Johnson would be to improve the passing game.
24. New England (from Seattle): Patrick Willis, LB, Ole Miss - Willis seems like a Belicheck-type player. He's hard-nosed and has a knack for making the big play.
25. N.Y. Jets: Marshawn Lynch, RB, California - None of the fourteen teams picking directly ahead of the Jets has a dire need at the running back position. Even so, in order for the Jets to get Lynch, they will probably need to trade up because Lynch has top-15 talent. If Lynch were to fall this far, it would take the Jets 0.0004 seconds to hand in their pick.
26. Philadelphia: Victor Abiamiri, DE, Notre Dame - Jevon Kearse cannot be depended upon any longer. The Eagles need to plan for the future at the defensive end position.
27. New Orleans: Greg Olson, TE, Miami - The U has had a player taken in the first round pick in each of the last 12 years. Olson is their only hope this year, and he seems to fit in New Orleans.
28. New England: Ryan Kalil, C, USC - A hard-nosed, team-oriented anchor of the Pats' offensive line would be a welcome addition.
29. Baltimore: Aaron Ross, DB, Texas - Big-time talent, big-time tackler, big-game experience. Sounds a lot like Ed Reed.
30. San Diego: Michael Bush, RB, Louisville - This pick is based on the assumption that the Bolts will allow Michael Turner to bolt town. Bush would have been a top-10 pick had it not been for his knee imjury. His situation reminds me a lot of Willis McGahee's situation with the only difference being Bush will have already rehabed his injury prior to the draft.
31. Indianapolis: Lawrence Timmons, LB, Florida State - Timmons will be a Shawn Merriman-type DE/LB in the pros.
32. Chicago: Ben Grubbs, G, Auburn - Chicago has no pressing needs so they'll solidify the O-Line.
A few extra thoughts:
-Looking at this mock draft, the recurring theme seems to be the partnering of superstars with draftees that play the same position. Calvin Johnson with Braylon Edwards; Reggie Nelson with Sean Taylor; Leon Hall with DeAngelo Hall; Ted Ginn, Jr. with Steve Smith; Dwayne Bowe with Hines Ward; Aaron Ross with Ed Reed; Michael Bush with LaDainian Tomlinson. Interesting.
-The Redskins are the best team with a pick in the top ten. They could be this year’s Saints next season.

Appreciate your mocks every year, Studs. I know you will provide updates, but at a quick glance I am thinking Quinn drops a bit more. Barring a trade, maybe down to Houston. I cannot see Houston taking a RB with their pick. I also think Marshawn Lynch is way too low. Green Bay looks like a good fit. I like Dwayne Jarrett a lot as a USC fan, but don't see him going in the top 20 and not before Ginn.

1. Why are you picking the Bears over the Colts? Go COLTS!
2. I don't see Timmons going to the Colts, he wouldn't fit into their system. Even if they let Freeney go (unlikely) they are more likely to take a CB.

32. Chicago: Ben Grubbs, G, Auburn - Chicago has no pressing needs so they'll solidify the O-Line.
I'm not so sure about that.
Thomas Jones and Lance Briggs are going into free agency. I would expect the Bears to tag Briggs and keep him, but I could see them letting Jones walk based on their investment in Cedric Benson.
The Bears love the two back attack though and would probably want to have a good second RB behind Benson and interchange them.
Mike Brown is also injury plagued and could very well be cut. They might draft a safety.

If the Lions draft Quinn it would be just as bad as another WR taken. Ultimately if they can't draft Russell they need to trade down.

RE 3
Frick, Freeny is a DE that the Colts will franchise if they have to. The Colts could actually use a LB. They will re-sign June, but Morris (who was a backup who ended up beating out Gardner at OLB) is making the league minimum and I'm guessing he moves on. He hadn't played well until this year. Can you say contract year? The Colts will also let go of Mike Doss and possibly Nick Harper at DB. So needless to say the Colts can use some defensive players. So if Timmons is there at #32 when the Colts pick, they could snag him afterall.

PFT has their mock draft up. Here is their first stab at it. Doesn't mean much before the combine, but always cool to look back and see who falls:
1. Oakland Raiders: JaMarcus Russell, quarterback, LSU. 2. Detroit Lions: Joe Thomas, offensive tackle, Wisconsin. 3. Cleveland Browns: Jamaal Anderson, defensive end, Arkansas. 4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Calvin Johnson, wide receiver, Georgia Tech. 5. Arizona Cardinals: Alan Branch, defensive tackle, Michigan. 6. Washington Redskins: Gaines Adams, defensive end, Clemson. 7. Minnesota Vikings: Brady Quinn, quarterback, Notre Dame. 8. Houston Texans: Adrian Peterson, running back, Oklahoma. 9. Miami Dolphins: Ted Ginn, Jr., wide receiver, Ohio State. 10. Atlanta Falcons: LaRon Landry, defensive back, LSU. 11. San Francisco 49ers: Amobi Okoye, defensive tackle, Louisville. 12. Buffalo Bills: Dwayne Bowe, wide receiver, LSU. 13. St. Louis Rams: Reggie Nelson, defensive back, Florida. 14. Carolina Panthers: Robert Meacham, wide receiver, Tennessee. 15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Levi Brown, offensive tackle, Penn State. 16. Green Bay Packers: DeMarcus Tyler, defensive tackle, North Carolina State. 17. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jarvis Moss, defensive end, Florida. 18. Cincinnati Bengals: Leon Hall, defensive back, Michigan. 19. Tennessee Titans: Lawrence Timmons, linebacker, Florida State. 20. New York Giants: Craig Davis, wide receiver, LSU. 21. Denver Broncos: Marshawn Lynch, running back, California. 22. Dallas Cowboys: Anthony Gonzalez, wide receiver, Ohio State. 23. Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Willis, linebacker, Mississippi. 24. I think I read where they predicted that Jarrett would run a 4.6 at the combine and fall. Then again, he could run a 4.2 and move up to the top ten. We watched several USC players fall last year and it happens to somebody every year.

Brad's gone. It's Tarvaris Jackson's team. They traded up to get him last year, let's see what he can do.
Quinn is not going to be a good pro QB. There is no way the Vikings would let a sure-fire talent like Adrian Peterson slip past them.

Re:11-Anquan Boldin had a bad combine, and was drafted in the second round in 03. Here are some guys drafted before him.
2 Detroit Charles Rogers 3 Houston Andre Johnson 17 Arizona Bryant Johnson 44 Washington Taylor Jacobs 45 New England Bethel Johnson
How many would you like to have before Boldin? Not even the guy Arizona picked before him. He had a repaired knee, so there was fear there. But from what I have seen Jarrett do, I hope he falls and falls right in to the Eagles lap at #26.

All reports out of Detroit have the Lions taking Joe Thomas. (Although if Russell falls I'd expect them to take him).
I heard a report the other day that made Peterson a "wild card" option with the news that KJ could be out half or all of next season.

I also enjoy the annual mock draft thread, Studs.
As tempting as a Jarrett or Ginn might be, I think the 49ers go big up front or in the secondary at #11. Any of Branch, Okoye, L. Hall (ranked much lower here than most rankings) or Landry that fall should get scooped up.

32. Indianapolis Colts: Joe Staley, offensive tackle, Central Michigan.
Unless this kid is a sure fire draft pick or the next Jonathon Ogden, I doubt the Colts take him. They already have a Pro-Bowler in Tarik Glenn and, while I am not his biggest fan, Ryan Diem is quite good. I see the Colts going the way of a DB or LB. I really wouldn't mind a DT but they will probably address that with their second or forth rounder. (They traded their third for Booger McFarland) Hopefully they will keep both Freeney and June, but if they let June go, they will def. draft LB. Either way they have gone offense in 2 of the last 4 years (and have gotten 2 players I now love that on draft day questioned.) This year I am gonna trust Bill Polian and Jim Irsay and love whoever they pick. Watch him be thier first bust ever.
For insight on the first bust ever comment please see first round picks of the years by the Colts:
1994: 2, Marshall Faulk, RB Jim Irsay takes control of team in 1995: 1995: 15, Ellis Johnson , NT 1996: 19, Marvin Harrison, WR 1997: 19, Tarik Glenn, T Bill Polian hired as GM in 1997: 1998: 1, Peyton Manning, QB 1999: 4, Edgerrin James, RB 2000: 28, Rob Morris, MLB 2001: 30, Reggie Wayne, WR 2002: 11, Dwight Freeney, DE 2003: 24, Dallas Clark, TE 2004: 44, Bob Sanders, FS 2005: 29, Marlin Jackson, CB 2006: 30, Joseph Addai, RB
8 Probowlers, 1 guy who will be in Canton in the next few years, 2-4 guys who could follow. I'd say that's good drafting. (BTW I really questioned the Clark pick and I wondered about Addai if he could hold up. Boy was I wrong. I also thought they should have taken Doss in the first round that year. He fell to second round and I was thrilled. I loved him after that NCG that year. [And yes this is the guy who blew out McGahee's knee])

Interesting observation: most of the "I don't think my hometown team will take a XX" comments are critical of the PFT mock rather than NY Studs' mock. NYS has Dallas taking the DB wiggs wants, and the DT barilko wants. Way to go Studs! lol

RE: 20 Jim Irsay isn't doing anything with the draft. Make no mistake, it's Polian's team. I'm sure Dungy has a lot of input, but Polian makes the call.
Like I said in #3, they will draft a LB or DB with their first pick. I would be surprised if it wasn't a LB. But Polian will make the right call based on his reserach and the team needs. It won't be a OT. They have absolutely no need there. If something happens and they take an OT, then rest assured that he is a stud that fell way too far. Though I'd still be shocked. That O-line for the Colts are outstanding as is. I can see some backups later in the draft, but not with your first pick with some glaring holes to fill on defense.

I don't think there is anyway that Timmons falls all the way to #32 as teh first mock indicated.
The NFL site has a mock with JON BEASON, OLB, Miami at #32 and that is on par with what I'd expect. I heard somewhere that they expect not only that Freeney and June will be back but Rob Morris too. Since he's making the minimum, I can't believe that and not sure how much the Colts can give him.
