Figured this thread was going to get started sometime.
NBC 5 news in Chicago is reporting that the Bears have used the franchise tag on Lance Briggs. |

With the salary cap giving teams a lot more room this year, I don't think this is going to be a very big FA year. Teams are going to resign or tag all the better FA eligible players.

Talk in Buffalo is that Marv Levy is going to let Nate Clements go for sure, and then one of either Takeo Spikes or London Fletcher...
I am not liking this at all...

Drew Bennett signs with the Rams (6 years)
This is one of those moves that gets me excited, and then I wind up reaching for the guy in drafts expecting him to supplant Isaac Bruce. Watch; he'll supplant Kevin Curtis instead.
Jeff Garcia signs with Tampa Bay; Bucs acquire rights to Jake Plummer
And this is one of those headlines that makes you think the team will be much improved at QB next year. Watch; they'll be worse. Remember, Garcia, Plummer, and Simms can't all play at once.
Pretty crazy off-season already, I think.
New England decided to pay a premium for a free agent (Adalius Thomas).
I'm sure Thomas will be very good in New England. I wonder who drew the unenviable task of bonking Belichik on the head with a coconut to knock him out long enough to give Thomas a $60M deal (source: ProFootballTalk.com).
The Pats also cut Corey Dillon (Laurence Maroney just became a first round draft pick, maybe a Top 6) and they're about to steal Wes Welker from Miami using the so-called 'poison pill' tactic (source: NFL.com via the above linked PFT rumor mill link).
The landscape is a-changin'.

Hmm, that last link above gives a different figure for Adalius Thomas:
The Patriots also signed LB Adalius Thomas as expected. The deal is for $37.5 million for five years, which includes $24 million in the first three years.
I know there are several different ways to calculate the actual value of NFL contracts (which are alien beasts, for sure). I tend to think the NFL website is pushing a doctored number, since the league is often motivated by factors which PFT and journos don't subscribe to.

49ers add Lelie to list of free-agent catches
Patriots add Kyle Brady and Sammy Morris along with Adalius Thomas.
A couple other players out there looking for new jobs that could have fantasy implications: Ahman Green, Travis Henry, Kevin Curtis, and Dominic "Piss on You" Rhodes.
The Bucs going after a QB make no sense. They now have 5 QB's under contract and if Plummer reports (instead of retiring) that makes 6: Simms, Gradkowski, McCown, Eugene, Garcia, and Plummer.

Pretty good trade for the Jets I'd say.
per Rotowire NYJ 3/5/2007 Jones was traded by the Bears' along with their second-round pick (63rd overall) in the 2007 draft to the Jets for New York's second-round pick (37th pick) in this year's draft, according to ESPN News. Jones had asked for a trade and the Bears were willing to comply having Cedric Benson waiting in the wings. Jones immediately becomes the Jets' starting running back and look for New York to use Leon Washington as a change-of-pace back.

yeah, good deal for the Jets, but I was hoping Leon would get a shot (yeah, yeah, I'm biased)
Actually, looking at this, the Bears traded their best RB in order to move up in round 2 essentially???

Jones was turning into a whiner about wanting a deal or wanting out and his performance didn't warrant such whining. I don't like his style and he's not that great of a back. A 1,000 yard season is really nothing to brag about anymore. He's also 28 which is right when RBs are about to drop off in production.
The Bears have a good combination in Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson (whose style is very similar to Jones), provided Benson is healthy of course.
The situation on the Bears that concerns me is that Briggs now wants out unless he gets a long term deal. He need look no further than his agent (IIRC it's Rosenhaus.) for the reason why no deal has happened. The Bears offered Briggs the second highest contract in team history last year and Rosenhaus turned it down.

Keeping McGahee long-term would have required more money than the Bills were willing to pay (correct decision) and Marv Levy has no use for no-character guys.
My view: good riddance. McGahee puts in about 3 or 4 good games a year. He's not worth the hassle.

Not as rough as the Bills are in for with Shaud Williams and Chris Brown splitting carries. Heh.

They are in trouble yes, Wilis had some talent, yes, but there is no sense keeping a guy on the team who has asked to be traded and has been a cancer on the team over the last year.
Reports state that Willis still doesn't have a clue about the offensive playbook because he was never willing to put in the time to learn it, he didn't get along with his teammates, and was a pending free agent after this season.
Put all that together, and you have to move the guy for what you can.

Dominic Rhodes signs for 2 years with Oakland, eliminating one of the few good available running backs on the market. Teams that still need a RB: Green Bay, Buffalo, NY Giants, Tennessee...I am sure I missed one?
Decent RB's available? Hmm...Chris Brown? Corey Dillon? Ruben Droughans? Ugh...If I am a GM I offer some mid-round picks to Dallas for Julius Jones, as it seems they are more in love with Marion Barber the Third.

The McGahee deal is a 3rd and 7th in 2007 and a 3rd in 2008.
Nobody else would deal with Buffalo becuase they all thought Buffalo wanted too much for him.
Just goes to show ya how different teams value players.

There are a couple of good RBs available in the draft. Marshawn Lynch and Adrian Peterson, for example. In fact, before the Browns signed Lewis I thought they'd make Peterson the next William Green.

Bears trade for Archuleta
I really like this deal for the Bears. They only give up a sixth round pick and pickup a safety that will most likely start for them given Mike Brown's injury history and that Archuleta played for Lovie Smith in St. Louis. They can really get some depth at safety now if Mike Brown restructures his deal.
Now with the low 1st and high 2nd round picks they can focus on other needs.

Houston's giving up two seconds (07 and 08, I believe) and swapping places in this year's first round (dropping two spots) for Schaub. Seems like a pretty heavy price to me.

Redskins may put together offer for Bears' Briggs
Bears get the sixth overall pick, Skins get Briggs and the Bears' first rounder, no. 31. That allows the Bears to draft Brady Quinn, ensuring we won't see the Bears in the post season again for quite some time.

Re: 38
I don't know much about Darwin Walker, but I do know that from watching Takeo over the last year, the injuries really took a toll on his play. He played better over the last couple games, but there is still a pretty big risk for a salary like his.
I think there might also be a Marv Levy getting rid of the attitudes angle to this move.
If Takeo is healthy this year, its a great move for the Eagles.

They won't take Quinn. Lovie and Angelo are tied to Grossman for better or for worse.
I would expect the Bears to take Peterson or a blue chip offensive lineman.

It is a 2008 conditional pick, I wrote 8th round.
Walker is a solid D-lineman. Eagles are counting on the young DT's, Patterson, and Bunkley, to take a step forward I pressume with this trade. They also go Reagor from Indy. As far as Spikes goes, he will be better than what they have at LB. Trotter also had a disappointing year last year. If both can come back to their Pro Bowl play, the Eagles will be a strong force to reckon with in the NFC. I hate that if though.
