Subject: RIFC 2007: pre-draft discussion
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Mon, Jul 16, 2007, 11:07
I am pleased to announce the 14 managers for the 2007 RIFC:
I AM CANADIAN s_R Beezer Leggestand Guru Goatlocker youngroman bmd Holt SMith32 Bags Slackjawed Yokels Nerfherders Greybear
This list includes me, the top-6 non-me seeds from last year's RIFC, 3 teams from each AAA league, and the (playoff) winner of the AA league. For each AAA league, I selected the playoff winner plus the top two seeds for the playoffs.
Although it is still early, there are several things that we can start on:
1. Sign-ups for qualifying leagues. I will start a separate thread for this.
2. Discussion of possible rules changes. (We can use this thread for that.)
3. Discussion of any other issues that should be resolved before the start of the draft.
I expect that the RIFC draft will start sometime around August 18, plus or minus a few days. I plan to draft using kafenatid.net software once again, and recent history suggests that we can knock off the draft in 2 weeks.
I have not yet reviewed the issues that arose during last season that might prompt rules changes (and/or clarifications). If anyone would like to skim through the various discussion threads from last year and post potential issues, please do so. I’ll copy over last year’s rules momentarily.

Following the draft, all undrafted players will be subject to a "waiver-like" priority claiming process, with the priorities equal to the reverse of the first round draft picks.
So, the team selecting 14th in round 1 will have the top priority in post draft claiming. However, remember that claiming priorities reset after each week for the first 6 weeks of the season, so there is no persisting impact of having top priority post-draft.

Re: draft timing
Last year, we began the draft on Aug 16, and completed it on Aug 30.
This year, the opening game of the NFL schedule is on Thursday, Sept. 6. In order to carry out our post-draft claiming process, we should do our best to complete the draft by Sept 2 at the absolute latest.
Although there are always those who want to start ASAP, most seem to prefer waiting as late as possible to begin the draft.
With that in mind, it would seem that we should aim to start the draft sometime in the August 15-18 timeframe.
Question: are there any managers who have availability constraints from August 15-31 that might slow down the draft? Remember that the draft software provides flexible options for setting up queues - which has been instrumental in keeping prior drafts moving along without many pauses.

I'm going to be out in the RV from 28 Aug to 4 Sept, but don't expect any issues. Plan to work Mon - Thurs that week and will be able to get in from there. And can set a queue to finish things out.
And I'm on travel 6-10 Aug, so the other dates are perfect for me.

In comparison with recent years, I no longer have "easy access" between roughly 6AM-5PM EST during the week. I'll try my best to setup queues, but considering I'll be making back-2-back picks, they'll probably be dependent on who goes with #1 pick, meaning a) I'll probably forgo automated queues, and send emails to Guru. b) wait until, I'm within access (normally early afternoon-bedtime, and weekends).
Other than that... no "blackout dates" in the immediate future for myself. (Although, it may slow down the draft somewhat)

I am going to be out of town August 14-15th on business travel with limited cpu access, so, I'd prefer to start on the 16th. But, I imagine I am going to be towards the bottom of the draft, so, if we start on the 15th and it gets to me by the 16th, I would be fine.
I have a couple other minimal access dates for out of town drafts, but I will be available via cell phone like previous years.

I just realized that we talked about clarifying tiebreakers for playoff games during last year's playoffs. I'm cool with Guru just picking something that makes sense and going with it, or we can talk it out and vote. I didn't see anything else that required further discussion.

How about this: The team with the better seed wins a playoff tie. To advance past a team seeded above you, you have to beat them, not just tie them.
As to the votes, the only issue requiring my vote for a decision is team defense, and I'll vote (b).
So, the results are: 1. The 3rd WR slot will be a WR/TE flex 2. We will stick with the previous IDP configuration (6 total, at least one at each of DL, LB, DB). 3. Team defense: no change in yardage formula |

Unlisted players During the draft, any player may be drafted, regardless of whether or not the player is listed at the hosting game site. Once the draft is completed, unlisted players may not be added to any roster. This applies for any post-draft waiver processing as well.
In the event that a drafted player is not listed after the draft has completed, a placeholder player will be assigned to the drafting team, to be replaced by the drafted player as soon as he is available.
Priority Claiming All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at noon on Wednesday. Following the first 6 weeks of the season, the priorities will reset weekly based on the reverse of W/L percentage. After that, priorities will not be reset. Throughout the season, when a player is claimed (either via "free agent priority claim" or a waiver claim), the claiming team moves to the end of the claiming priority list. Following the final regular season game, priorities will be reset based on playoff seed, with the top seed getting the top priority. Thereafter, throughout the playoffs, priorities will again adjust only when a claim is awarded.
Starting at 1:00pm on Wednesday, all free agents may be picked up by any team "first come, first served" without any change in priority status.
(Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process, with priorities equal to the reverse of the first round draft order.)
When a player is dropped from a roster, the player will go on waivers for 48 hours. At the end of the 48 hour period, if any team has placed a claim on the player, the team with the highest claiming priority will receive the player. If no claims are submitted, the player becomes a free agent at that time. If a player is dropped within 48 hours of his game freeze, he may not be claimed until the following week's free agent claiming process.
Starting five minutes prior to the scheduled start of each NFL game, no player in that game may be dropped, regardless of whether the player is an active or bench player.
Schedule 13 week round robin Doubleheaders all weeks 1-13 (play each team twice) Single elimination playoffs, weeks 14-16
Trades and trade deadline During the draft, trades may include draft picks. Trades will normally be approved immediately by the Commissioner, assuming they are reasonably balanced. If league managers believe an announced trade is unbalanced, they should protest the trade ASAP.
After the draft, trades will be subject to a review period. For the first 24 hours following a trade, managers may protest a trade by posting a message at the RotoGuru forum, or by sending an email to the Commissioner. If at least 3 managers protest a trade within 24 hours of its announcement, then all managers will be polled within the next 24 hours. If seven or more managers vote to veto a trade, then it will not be approved. If a proposed trade is announced less than 24 hours before the earliest freeze for any player involved, then the entire trade will not be processed until the following week.
If a trade does not receive at least 3 protests, then it will be effective 24 hours after it is announced. If a trade receives at least 3 protests but the protests are not upheld in a full league vote, then the trade will be processed 48 hours after it is announced.
The trade deadline is 11:30pm EST on November 9.
Playoffs 8 teams Top 6 W/L records are seeded 1-6 Top remaining total points are seeded 7-8 Teams with equivalent W/L records are seeded based on head-to-head first, then total points Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)
Players at the primary skill positions (QB, RB, WR) and team defenses may not be added for any reason during the playoffs. Free agents at these positions will be locked out after the final regular season game. You may drop a player at one of these positions, but once dropped, that player cannot be added later.
Players at the other positions (TE, PK, IDP) may be added or dropped according to normal regular season guidelines, subject to playoff claiming priorities, if applicable.
If a playoff game ends in a tie score, the team with the better seed shall advance.
Team which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

As an aside, any manager may rename his team at Fanball. If you do so, please keep the name somewhat intuitive, so that league outsiders can figure out which team is associated with each manager.

I don't usually post and interrupt you guys, but I do frequently read your posts. I was wondering if any of you had culdeus's e-mail address. I haven't been able to find it around here. I know he was very active in RIFC last year and I would like to send him an e-mail inviting him to AAA#2 since he is qualified. If any of you have it and don't mind sharing it could you send me an e-mail. If you don't want to share it and wouldn't mind sending him an e-mail could you attach my address to it, and then he could let me know since I am commishing. He seemed like a stat nut and I wouldn't mind having another one in the league. Thanks for the help!

Are there any requirements for position eligibility? Do we just go by whatever position Fanball lists for a given player?
I'm fine with starting the draft around the 15th. My only significant conflict would be Aug 31 - Sept 2, so that shouldn't cause much trouble.

Position eligibility = whatever fanball says on the day you draft the player.
IF fanball should change his position... it'll only be changed IF you drop the player (I believe).
I would have to go back and lookup the Demarcus Ware threads from a few years back.

Judy - set up WR for a min of 2 and a max of 3. Set up TE for a min of 1 and a max of 2
[87] - Whatever Fanball lists for eligibility as of the time you draft a player will persist as long as you own that player.
If Fanball changes a player's eligibility, you have the option to accept the new position, but you will then lose the original designation. If you keep the original designation, but then drop the player, any team that picks him up will have to use the new designation.
